The mid-autumn festival came and went - here it's much centred around the mooncakes. Making them, eating them, offering to the moon, and stealing them. I've only celebrated four mid-autumn festivals here, but I must admit I already feel quite nostalgic about it all.
Lots of love,
Miriam

Wow, Miriam is a talented film maker. The entire process of the festival and the warmth of positive human relations are everywhere. The story telling is very clear. Nobody in China has ever documented how rural Han farmers in Qinghai celebrate the traditional Moon Festival. The traditions differ from region to regions, and many are vanishing fast. This makes this video of Miriam invaluable!

I miss my childhood celebrating every festival with my family. Since I had my children , I have never stopped the traditional. I visited my parents and my husband’s parents. Actually I celebrated twice in every festival. I hoped my son would have a good memory as me. My parents they were all passed away. I divorced and my son stayed with me. Now he grew up and got married. He lived with his mother-in law. I live alone. No one celebrates with me in any festival’s day. I always felt sad in the big festival day, very bad mood, missing my parents and even crying. I hope all the people will care ur family especially in the big festival.

Your reflection on tradition is so beautifully put into words. "In a world that changes fast, it is a treat in itself to have traditions. To have days where we all know what to do. These traditions even the children know, and their experience is more or less the same experience we had their age. Tradition ties us together." As a young mother myself, I also more greatly value tradition and hope that it provides, as you said, memories, future nostalgia, safety, and something to rely on because, no matter how much the world changes, some things stay the same.

Such a beautiful video Miriam. You are a fabulous videographer and storyteller. I grew up in Canada celebrating my Ukrainian heritage with many different traditions during the year. The special foods, being together as family is so special in any culture. As you said we can celebrate any day. Why does it have to be a special day? I suppose that's what makes it so special and keeps it that way. Thank you for showing me the traditions of the Mid-Autumn festival. Much love to you, Yonghong, San San, Lian and the rest of the family!

Thank you! And I'm so haooy to hear that your family kept the tradition even when moving abroad. It's not easy to do! If you still have relatives in the Ukraine, I hope they are alright❤️

Thank you Miriam. I have distant relatives still in western Ukraine (it's a bit safer there for now) although I lost touch with them after my father died. I was born in Canada and unfortunately am not totally fluent in Ukrainian although I am learning now. 😀

Wonderful. I was quite emotional towards the end. Thinking of my own Asian family and the traditions we have here. My Japanese mother often explains the old culture. Things that are steady are comforting. The family life you have in China is delightful.

What a wonderful tribute to your in-laws by documenting their hard work to preserve special traditional foods. Please say hi to them from the Northwoods of Wisconsin, the coldest place in America!

What a comforting thought to know that while around the world our traditions may be different, those precious family relationships and roles are the same. Watching your mother-in-law making the mooncakes and bread, with you and the children at her side, chatting, learning and helping, reminds me of those times in the kitchen with my own mother, doing the Christmas baking, both as a child then years later with the grandchildren. Those traditions, those delicious smells, those gentle loving conversations with our elders. As you say, when other things outside in the world are chaotic and ever-changing, those family traditions provide a sense of stability and safety. A cocoon of love and wonder, especially for the children. Your father and mother-law are beautiful souls. How blessed your children are to have them in their lives. Making great memories. Though it is clearly challenging, you have done a great job of making sure your children maintain close loving bonds with both sets of grandparents. Bravo! Lovely video. Thank you.

So beautiful made breads. It takes much time and effort. I can imagine how delicious they are. Since I went abroad I also began to make festival food myself. The food I usually didn't like to eat😅

Such a joy to watch! 😊 Here in Las Vegas we can only find the little hockey puck shaped mooncakes in bakeries. Your Mother-in-law’s look delicious too.
