Is it still worth reading it after seeing the movie adaptation?

I completely understand what your saying! Misery is such a great book if you really want a creepy story to curl up to and this edition is really well made. It will lay flat no matter what page and the outer black has a nice texture to it. I definitely need to read more Steinbeck! Thanks for sharing Leonard’s rules...I can say I wish King would follow that rule but then again, he seems to know how to sell books and many love his style. Funny thing is you mentioned Leonard and I didn’t find Get Shorty very interesting, sadly. What are your favorites by Leonard?

@@rarebookreviewer Ha! I have to admit i completely missed Leonard when I was reading crime fiction in the 1990s. I was a huge fan of 'Justified' and started to listen to a lot of what Leonard had to say about writing, especially when I sat down to write my own crime novel (unpublished). I always kept his 10 rules in mind. I think this is why his work adapts so easily to film or television. I was surprised to learn that he and Margaret Atwood were great friends, and she admired him a good deal. I also agree that King's style is his own and that includes 1100 page novels. I enjoyed the Shining but abandoned IT after he spent a whole chapter on the bicycle (It's fast. The fastest there is. Faster than Satan himself! I get it). The Farseer Trilogy was my only disappointment from FS precisely because there's 50 pages of plot in the first novel and about 75 pages in the second, and it all occurs at the end. I was skipping whole chapters-sometimes two or three-just searching out the actual plot points. It became exasperating. I skipped reading the third book altogether because I knew it wouldn't offer any satisfying conclusion or resolution. I just can't read at a speed that allows me to waste time on such self-indulgent writing. I like to read every word, so every word has to offer me some reason for reading it. Even talking to people way back when, who plowed through 'Shogun' in 2 days, they'd confess things like 'Oh, I don't read narration, only dialogue.' Maybe more people skip chapters than we know, but to them it's just part of 'reading'.

@@elliotwalton6159 We are SO alike in our views on plot pacing. I don't understand how some people can stand an author spending so much time on trivial information that really doesn't drive the plot. I always learn so much from! That was really intriguing about Atwood thinking so highly of Leonard and their connection! Very cool! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Farseer Trilogy! I love this type of insight because I am sure that book isn't for me now!

Love the books that you chose to pick up! I have had some on my list for awhile...I should have bit the bullet and purchased Kavalier and Clay. I just have a lot of unread books on the shelf. I’ve been waiting for Of Mice and Men to hit a sale at some point but I never get that lucky. Thanks for commenting that you’ll purchase Misery at some point! It’s awesome!

I believe that is their vision for the direction with Stephen King books. I will send them an email and check to see if they’re willing to give an official response. I know it can take quite a lot of time and effort before a book is published so I wouldn’t expect a new King book soon though they could surprise me. With them continuing the series with the silver, black, and red I think it would be smart to do similar designs. Your thoughts?

Because I can never quite make up my mind and just do one big shop, I end up paying extra for shipping, but I ordered Misery along with The Godfather which another reviewer convinced me to buy. I also have six of the James Bond books on the way. I'm really looking forward to those. I hope you come back with a book review of Tey's writing. thanks for these posts and the chance to view Mark smith's exceptional work.

@@elliotwalton6159 the FS edition of The Godfather does look exceptional! I’ll be picking it up at some point, most definitely. I wouldn’t call myself a minimalist but I try to not overdo it with purchases as I am a slow reader with two young kiddos who I spend a lot of time with. If I get to read a couple of chapters a day, it’s a good day of reading for me. But I do enjoy the collecting aspect and if I were single, I’d be in trouble. Let me know if you enjoy reading the Bond books, as I know we’d both agree the illustrations are among the best FS has to offer!

@@rarebookreviewer I listen to Bond audiobooks often as I draw. They are, of course, much more interesting than the movies. I'd love to see Bond redone as a TV series set back in the Cold War. Fay Dalton's illustrations are as close as I'll come to seeing that. I've had a bit of a windfall, so I've been a tad indulgent with the books. I'm a slow reader as well. I got through the final two novels of the Book of the New Sun reading along with an audiobook. A very positive experience i will do again. Donna Tart, who wrote the introduction to True Grit, also recorded the audiobook. It's an excellent reading. I will be reading that novel along with her, for sure!

Oh boy...I definitely have to have that now. Have you read it? We seem to have similar tastes in regards to a good paced plot. Would love to hear your thoughts on the story if you have. I’m definitely surprised about the second printing as well. They definitely didn’t stop selling it from what I remember so that was awfully sly of them. @@rarebookreviewer Me too! I'd have to buy a proper mic and camera to do the video reviews I'd like to do. I've never read Godfather even though I was a teenager at the time. I was too engrossed by Ray Bradbury, E. R. Burroughs and Alistair MacLean :)).
