Yes, he's driving very well with what he has access to. I would be too stressed to either try to push the right foot through the floor or by constantly need to keep away.

@@qwertz4035 didn't see your reply. It's a "planetary gear set" like a Ford Model T transmission, or an old school pencil sharpener. With only three parts; an outer ring gear - powered by the big electric motor driving the wheels, a planetary gear set that spins inside the ring gear powered by the engine, and a central sun gear controlled by the small electric motor - the combination of all 3 let's the Prius do what it does. It can generate (⚡) and use (🔋⛽) two different energy sources in multiple ways. The small electric motor not only generates electricity from the engine, it can instantly set the gear ratio of the engine at any speed (even as a reverse gear). For such a complex yet simple and fascinating gearbox in the Prius - it had often been over looked or willingly dismissed

Toyota HSD can be considered a type of Cvt, but it is not like the common variable belt type cvt.

Wide open throttle for so much of the lap! Cars I learned to drive in were old/not much power, but fun to drive and you could do a lot within the speed limit :)

It sure doesn't like being driving like that, but at normal speeds, driven normally, it's actually very good. I've had my gen 2 prius for 10 years now, best car I've ever had.

Perfect vehicle for an instruction video. Lots of time to explain the line and braking points and you could have the turn names onscreen for longer than just a second.

@@Jacobtheunwise But the hate is less about owning one and more about their existence in general. Also, CVT was a victim of a few bad implementations and bad timing with the ICE->electric switchover. Theoretically it's the ideal form of gearbox. Even F1 had to ban it.

Oh that poor little 1.5L screaming its head off, especially when his electric buddy stopped helping. Still looks like like much fun, with the occasional scary moment like 11:00. I hope it didn't start using oil after this adventure. I have a 16yr old gen Prius, and I've always had it in the back my mind to do this with it. Having seen this, I don't think I will, except maybe on the last day before I sell it.

The 1nz-fxe in the old Prius is a version of the 1nz-fe which can go to more rpm. The Prius throttle body only goes 60% open max and 5000 rpm limited according to my scan tool

This is probably the perfect car for a beginner who may want to lap on the Nurburgring. Since it is slow, one can easily learn the basics of making turns on the track before transitioning to more powerful cars.

Had the same car, also in black. Loved it. And I‘m a petrolhead with several MX-5 in the past and currently driving am Golf MK 7 GTI PP. Really miss the Prius. It was the most reliable car I ever had. I sold it a few years ago and switched to a E38 740i. 😂

we actually have a gen II prius we're modding. We already stripped it out, have a carbon hood, and are saving up for some Advan wheels. We dream of shipping her out to do a run at the ring. But that's a ways off for now

@@MrTchou As much as we can, we aren't planning on doing much to the engine so we're hoping to basically go full lotus with it. The Enkei J10 wheels we have on it now already shaved a few pounds off the wheels but honestly we want the Advans for fun as much as we want to go even lighter

It was torture. The sharp braking and lack of momentum offered no regen or engine charge. When it gets to 0-1 bar, that's when you're stuck with 75PS

​@@Jacobtheunwise the prius was designed assuming most of your driving is at partial power. Highway holding steady at 65, or city streets at 40 for example. That's very easy to do for a 70hp engine, so it can spend a little extra power to recharge the batteries for the next acceleration. Going full throttle though forces the ECU to pull power from the battery until there's nothing left, and you're already asking the max out of the engine, it has none to spare to recharge the battery.

@@AlekR3Prius Can monitor, it was written by a Japanese guy, runs on windows XP only, gets a lot of data, one guy from a french prius forum translated it to french, he gave it to me. i don’t recall if it’s opensource but he had the green light from the japanese dev to give it for free.

ive always thought the prius was cool besides how slow they are. i mean if teslas can be fast and a prius has less battery weight and a hybrid powertrain instead imagine how fast a prius would be with faster motors. maybe tune the engine to give a little more power too.

First-gen CVT, it's just like one big gear, modern cvts simulate gears now, more natural of a sound as it accelerates.

@@banaana1234 They all do it now. They simulate shifts, but still have the constant gear when cruising, apparently the simulated gears doesn't reduce efficiency that much. They usually have an "Eco" mode, which removes the simulated shifts.

I have heard that the standard brakes on most cars can't handle a full lap and would get heat soaked. It doesn't seem like an issue here though?

Those early CVT transmissions make it sound like one big gear. At least the modern ones simulate multiple gears, make it sound more natural.

@@NatedoGP I think they stated the simulated shifts don't negatively effect the efficiency that much, the single rpm thing is only part of what makes CVTs efficient. Also, most of them also have an Eco mode, which pretty much removes the simulated shifts. The full efficiency is still there should you choose it, but still pretty efficient regardless compared to traditional autos.

@@banaana1234 Yeah, I'm not sure how it works, but the engineers who program probably know what they are doing. Most CVT equipped cars aren't sports cars it should be noted. Though as I mentioned, they can easily revert to no simulated shifts depending on the driving conditions.

To all guys here that are not aware since the next generation Prius from 2010 and above the transmission is different and overall set up is different, the cars doesn’t whine that much , they have more pulling power and way better to drive. But yeah it’s fun for sure 👌🚗✌️

@@patricknintemann924 maybe. I've driven at 150-181km/h for over an hour in a Prius once. Average fuel consumption was 6.6/100km It was nice

@@toyotaprius79 That's impressive. I would have assumed more consumption. I thought the hybrid system only really saves fuel in the city. because the engine turns off when you are stoped and the electric motor gets you going. Thats when a normal car wastes the most fuel. In stop and go traffic.

​​@@patricknintemann924It's still a very efficient engine, though it's true that the hybrid system doesn't do much while holding steady. The idea behind a hybrid system is that it allows you to undersize an engine. An small engine working harder is generally more efficient than one being choked off through the throttle plate. Anytime you need more power, the electric motor can boost you through. Whenever you don't need the extra power, the ECU can move the engine load into a more efficient zone to recharge the batteries. Cars without hybrids need a much more powerful engine in order to cover every possible situation on its own, and is oversized for steady state. Which is why they only start to become efficient at highway cruising, where you're working the engine more. Eco-turbos are utilizing the same logic. You can undersize an engine for steady state, and spool up the turbo when you need more power. Though it's obviously less flexible since it can't bank excess energy

Get a Thornton tuner chip for your Prius. I put the stage 3 in my first generation Prius and on a Dyno it's putting 150 horsepower to the wheels. Not only did the horsepower go up but it charges much faster. I do 75 most of the time on the highway and I still get 34 miles to the gallon with the Thornton tuner chip.

But this is not the ultimate in battery performance. The Prius has a small battery and is only using maybe 50% of the battery capacity (to reduce aging and to be able to keep the same performance in a 10 year old car as a new, since the lost capacity comes from the reserved oart and not from the end-user capacity) Different cars are designed for different needs, and a big top speed was not part of the goal for the Prius. It's like riding in an old car from former East Germany and use as reference for what a petrol car is capable of.

@@perwestermark8920 Prius top speed is actually limited to 170 kph due to MG1 (Motor Generator 1) rotation speed. On the autobahn it goes up to that speed without a sweat and stays there, fuel use at that speed is about 6L/100km. On the Lexus GS450h for example they overcome the MG1 max speed by adding a 2 speed gearbox.

They are all right these things. Haha.. Damn thing can scream. It was a pretty enjoyable lab. Who would've thought a prius would be such a hoot, that too on the 'ring. All in all I don't hate them that much anymore.

When this car was new top gear did a test where they drove the Prius flat out around a track and an M3 was just keeping up results: Prius 18mpg M3 19mpg

Top Gear modified the Robin to roll more easily for content, so I wouldn't put much stock into their results.

The engine noise is interesting. It is not related to the speed. This explains why Toyota drivers don't drive too fast, the engine gets load very early and runs at max. RPM for max. power.
