I'm surprised at how much people have completely forgotten about mission Impossible III. Its got brilliant action scenes, great locations, and a great villain in PSH and the introduction of Simon Pegg's character Benji. It's bizarre how forgotten it is. To me its the best of the series easily

Yes it had always been my favorite because of the realism. It also doesn’t have as much the “sitcom/marvel” humour of the next instalments, and stays true to the drama of the original mission impossible

I don't get the hate for Tom Cruise. He can pull off dramatic roles very well (Magnolia, Collateral), comedic roles very well (Tropic Thunder) and he is completely dedicated to giving it his all in action movies with stunts.

Well most people can't argue with his acting and his films, but what most people who don't really like Tom Cruse is that in real life he is pretty bad shit crazy, from Scientology to some of his TV appearances even when he was on the Nerdist podcast

Personally, I find this Mission Impossible my favorite. It brought an intensity, urgency and grittiness that I feel was missing in Ghost Protocol where it was a lot more playful. It wasn't just, someone was going to blow up the world. The threat was Hoffman, who was commanded scenes effortlessly and was super memorable and evil. The opening sequence with Cruise tied up speaking to Hoffman is so well done. Each action set piece, yes, they were back to back, but boy were they done well and always pushed the envelope a little (bathroom sequence, bridge, parachuting, helicopter through those turbines, the whole bomb in head business). Anyways, truly an awesome Mission Impossible. While you may not have liked it as much as I haha, still really enjoyed your thoughts. Thanks for doing what you do, Chris.

My favourite scenes are the ones with Philip Seymour Hoffmann. He was so intimidating, scary and a psycho who takes no shit from anyone especially in that plane scene. Man he's as scary as Heath Ledger's Joker.
@vipertaja
@vipertaja 9 жыл бұрын
impalabeeper As a big fan of both, I'd say In some ways he is scarier than the Joker, if only because running into a Ledger's Joker type in real life is fairly impossible, but Hoffman's character is very believable and realistic to me, ignoring whatever movie gadgets are in the film. He is just a nasty guy that happens to be an arms dealer and military contractor. I can imagine there are a dime a dozen people like him in that branch alone. I we count ones that don't actually kill people then there are even more.

impalabeeper A bit late for that I'm afraid, seeing as he's dead. But to be honest, I really love Michael Emerson's voice acting as the Dark Knight Returns Joker. I think it fits that specific version rather well. I would really love to see Gary Oldman do a performance like his "Stansfield" (in Leon/The professional) as The Joker from Bermejo's & Azzarello's "Joker", but I know that'll never happen.

To me this remains my favourite MI film(i just saw 5). Hoffman killed it in this movie, he genuinely got under my skin, and you could tell he made Ethan squirm. Even though the stakes aren't as high as MI4 and mI5, they are a lot more personal in this film, and seeing Ethan driven to the point where he's in tears is something makes the film all the better. A very underrated film despite the positive reception it's gotten.

I just saw 3 and loved how fast paced it was. I watched 1, 3 and 4 last night and 5 today. I did notice that car stopping by his face and it scared the shit out of me. This movie did something not alot of movies recently have done for me (Mad Max did it tho) which was it made my heart pound and had me scared. This was due to Abrams direction and how fast paced the movie was, which I loved. I think it took away from 4 and then 5 though, so I'll have to see them again

I always placed the Mission Impossible movies in order of 4, 1, 3, and 2. However I just rewatched MI3 the other day as it popped up on Showtime and I have to say I absolutely love it! I think if you hold the series to just 1,3, and 4 then you have a terrific trilogy right there. I do agree with you on the over fast paced movement of the movie that Abrams did. However one thing even better is that Phillip Seymour Hoffman is the best villain in the entire series I believe. When Hoffman is talking about killing whoever he loves and then killing him that pushes Hunt past his limits to almost throwing him out of a plane, it is absolutely fascinating! By the way, you did an excellent impression of Hoffman and I loved the Masters of the Web panel at SDCC! More importantly, thank you for all you do! I know that there are some things on the web that are just pure hate, but you are one of the bright spots where I can turn to and just have a blast watching your content because we do have very similar tastes in movies. Anyways, just wanted to say thank you for all you do and keep up the great work!

A pretty fair review on M:I-3. When I first saw this on opening day back in 2006, I was just happy to see a Mission:Impossible movie that is... well good. M:I-2 really left a stigma on this franchise that M:I-3 really wiped away clean. Being from Britain, I was really happy to see Simon Pegg in this film, and I am glad he stuck around for the fourth one. Action scenes are amazing, and what is shown in the acting department is good enough. My gripe with this film is the villian, the villians featured in M:I to date have been weak and Hoffman's Owen Davien finally shows what is wrong with the villians in this film. Hoffman was a great actor, but here he was so OTT that it was hillarious. M:I-3 is a good film, and I for one am glad it got a bit better as it went along. However the excellence of M:I-1 still have yet to be matched.

Mi3 is one of the best in the franchise. It’s was a HUGE step up from Mi2. There are scenes of remorse, and character building but not through the whole movie . Mi4 is probably my favorite because of the character building and the pacing . I would have to agree with the villains , there evil for no reason and maybe that’s the point . Some people just want chaos and no conversation can happen . I think that’s what Christoper Nolan tried to explain with The Joker . It’s just a thought .

Since you have really set me enjoying KZfaq film reviews... and I adore getting Stuckmannized (whether I agree with a review or not, you are always worthwhile)... I thought I discovered another terrific, well-informed KZfaq film reviewer today... and then he seriously disappointed me by becoming quite unseemly in a review (insulting and patronising his own audience rather than reviewing a film). All in the space of one day from respect to disappointment. So I suddenly discover just now a new Stuckmann review. I'm about to watch it now... but it could not be more welcome to turn my disappointment into joy :) I don't know if I'll agree or not... but I know you will not disappoint and you will inform.

It's probably my favourite. I was supposed to see a special early showing of Clerks 2 but I screwed up. They gave me a golden ticket and I saw this. Loved it. Later my friend told me something that kind of messes up the entire film. When Luther says Ethan's name, Hoffman's character's head is being held out the plane. It's so loud that he couldn't possible hear anything. Still, I love it. JJ is the best at restarting series after series (at least audience/moneywise).

Got this review in my recommended and it's remarkable how Stuckmann nailed the very same weaknesses as a director that Abrams would show over a decade later when he worked on the Disney Star Wars Trilogy.

Oh yeah. The action in this movie is spectacular. Especially when he has to swing from one building to another. It is just great! But I would agree that some aspects of this movie do not work entirely, so I would give it 7/10 stars or a B. Thank you, Chris. Great review as always. Huge fan! :)

I recently rewatched it and it doesn’t quite hold op to the more recent entries. It almost feels like the franchise was still trying to find its footing back then. However I do give this movie credit for shifting the focus of the series for once. This is pretty much the only MI in which Tom Cruise actually plays a character and the only one that has a memorable villain. But it suffers from an over-reliance on shaky-cam (something Abrams definitely improved on) and the action set pieces aren’t anywhere as exciting and memorable as they are in other installments. I‘m intrigued as to how the two final movies will turn out. I certainly would like it if they found a way to incorporate some of the qualities of MI3 into the finale of the franchise.

So glad you're giving attention to this movie, it's like the forgotten Mission Impossible film or something. In all honesty, I believe this film to be at least as good as Ghost Protocoll.

I love this one! It's definitely one of the best! I thought the part when Cruise swings from the one building then lands on the other was a great scene and stunt. I had a lot of fun with this film.

My favorite scenes are that torture scene with which the movie begins and the running scene. During the running scene, I was waiting for a quick cut or pan to his back, but that went on for like 30 secs. I was honestly surprised.

"No humanity" This film has the best portrayal of Ethan Hunt as a character through his relationships with the ones he loves. Never before has the series allowed Tom Cruise to show such emotional depth with his role. For the "whole the side characters didn't get enough development", the side characters only matter as much as they related to Ethan's character.
