It's an example of someone that designs AND builds, which in these days of specialization is so amazing to see. Mike Patey has skill sets that you would normally expect to see spread across 6 or 8 engineers, machinists and technicians. He's somewhat of a living National Treasure. And we're lucky to have him, because he shares and teaches.

Mike is an incredible aircraft designer for sure. Draco was impressive, but Scrappy is beyond very impressive. The leading edge slat design is awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing how well Scrappy performs. Ryan, it's great you were able to interview Mike at Oshkosh. Awesome video for sure! Thanks Ryan and Mike.

I watched the whole Scrappy build series. Very interesting but horrendously expensive and out of the reach of most people. However, as Mike said, hopefully some of his ideas and innovations will find their way into more homebuilds and kits and make things safer.

Well, to build this you have to keep your day job (and your day job $$), not sleep much, have access to your company's CNC machines, have some hot rod CAD equipment and an insatiable passion for aeronautical engineering. Impress enough big shots that they'll sponsor some of the build as well. So...yep, way out of reach for most people.

Imagine what an aircraft like that could be used for in PNG, if it ever entered series production, maybe even with a turbine engine, which might even increase the payload while still landing on a postage stamp.

Hoping mike gets a good CV prop setup to gain max performance and distance. That build has been amazing to watch, of course Draco was great as well. Hope some of the innovation is transferred into bush aviation soon. I've got lots of PNG missionary friends who would benefit from higher payloads, higher delivery frequency, and reduced risk which some of these innovations would offer..

Side ways landings with preset elevations. My concern would be a unintentional prop strike on the ground. Leading edge feathering like to know more about that trick. The solar powered wing was used on an aircraft at the Reno Airshow. The alternator was removed so as to reduce engine drag and the solar panels energized all the electrical to operate the plane. It gave the engine more horse power for more speed. Not sure if that solar plane won the race.

Mike is a self-taught genius. He has built 13 planes at home and holds several records with them. Scrappy is an incredible one-off bush plane. Ask him to donate it to your mission!

Self taught ? Mike has engineering degrees from most fields and is accomplished commercial pilot, stunt pilot and air show pilot with multiple companies in R&D and engineering. There’s even a rumoured DOD contract he is on. He’s an innovation to the engineering world both him and his brother within the aviation community and outside it. But with everything he has advisors as well that he like any specialist will utilise. His water company is doing well too but Mike is always about being the best of yourself and giving back. As he will say if you have talent and fortune it’s worth nothing if you don’t help out those who don’t have it..
