It is really nice to see 'real' people who can admit to making real mistakes. So many professionals try to put on a perfect show to impress people, and all it does is discourage people from trying, because we're not nearly as perfect. So thank you for not only giving such helpful advice, but also doing so in a way that doesn't make the rest of us feel so inadequate.

I'm a novice to quilting, I've only completed 1 quilt. When I first got interested in quilting (2003) I started collecting hundreds of patterns. Most of them had appliques, well I thought learning how to applique would be hard or even impossible.... for me that is. Anyway thanks to modern technology, watching these tutorials on appliqueing and quilting makes me think I can do it too. So in the near future, I'll give appliqueing a try, of course something simple at first....then who knows....

I am surprised that |Jan hasn't used liquid (or spray) sizing. In one class we were to iron on the paper to the wrong side, wet the edges with sizing with a q-tip and press the edges over the paper (just like you do when you use glue stick). The edges stay put even after the paper is removed while it is appliqued, however it does not feel or look like starch. I used the wee iron as it does a great job on those tiny places.

I'm a little confused about when you put freezer paper on the back or the front. Squares are to the back but leaves are to the front because they get sewn to the down? But doesn't everything get sewn down? Curves on circles and leaves are treated opposite?

Look how tiny those stars are in the snowman's eyes (I think that was on Santa Claus Lane)! The quilt in the background, where Jan used the half hexie to make her trees, do you have that pattern? I don't see it on the website.

Why don't you take the paper out before you sew down the circle, etc? Is it that necessary to hold it "firm"? Thanks! I'm LOVING this! Applique is NOT my favorite technique.
