well, I really can't agree with you here, I used to take reference from other artists, used to follow what they were doing to get better at art. got me stuck for over 10 years, I was trying so hard to understand how to draw people by looking at how other people interpret people instead of just looking at actual people. these shapes you talk about aren't coming from art, they're found in nature, when I started to leave all that tracing and referencing behind I really looked at people and was mindblown by just how many shapes are found just in a face. Drawing is no longer hard for me, I don't walk around with a binder full of references wherever I go. sit in a park, look at photos, pause a movie, trace the shapes from real people, because that is what the artists did that you are referencing from, it had to come from somewhere, using someone else's drawings to improve is useless if the person you are referencing from makes a mistake. what I'm saying is, you are right in a way, people are made of shapes, if you had replaced all the artwork with photos this would have been perfect now let's get into the drama!
