Sometimes there is a model that will stick in your memory and will forever be something that you reflect on throughout your modelling journey. Not because it was necessarily your first kit, or one where you achieved good results using a new technique, but simply because it just caused you so much hassle that it haunts your nightmares.
This kit is one of those.
Join me in this video as I build & review the Mistercraft PZL-37B 'Łoś FARR & VVS' in 1/72 scale. A plastic model kit of an early World War 2 light bomber aircraft from Poland.

This brings back memories of nearly all kits when I was a kid. They were terrible compared to today's nearly snap together kits. That's where I learned my modelling skills. I you've never had a kit with enough flash to make another model, you haven't lived, lol. As bad as this sounds, I think I'd give it shot.

@@ModelMinutes Not all old kits are terrible, Im building up some Atlantis and Round 2 1950's and 60's reissues and they are really good. And dont get me started on Aurora's those kits are sometimes better than anything you see today, but those kits were years and years ahead of their time.

So nice to see it! It was my first kit which I painted. So good to see it again! Now we have much better kit from IBG Models (one of the best kit in 1/72 scale I've ever made - highly recommended!) but that legendary "Łoś" from ZTS Plastyk/Mistercraft and also some others brand is still thriiling to me! I would recommend Mistercraft kits for kids as they are so cheap and great for Saturday builds -Sunday blow-ups. For the rest of us I find using Scalemates database prior to purchase allows one to pick up the gems while avoiding the duds. Cutting your teeth on lousy kits is good training but there is always the trade-off between effort and result, sows ears have a tendency not to want to become silk purses.

Nothing shall ever compare with the 2 month nightmare I spent on a pretty ordinary 1/72 Sukhoi-9 model from some obscure east european manufacturer. Picked it up for next to nothing. I hated every minute of that frustrating build I dont know why I continued with it I tried to correct it and enhance it along the way with scratchbuilt bits, extra polishing, dremelling and randomly jigging some wires in various places just for looks ... but the flaws in the model are so obvious whenever I look closely at it. Its my favorite model :) I love it and its shiny bare metal and grease stained finish. Its awesome.

I had a self propelled artillery kit I built once by a reputable manufacturer and it was quite difficult to assemble. The fit was poor and there were not enough tracks to complete the model. Fortunately the side skirts hid them. Your review was a great help as anyone buying this will know what to watch out for. Thanks for sharing this.

I appreciate that you have made a real effort and produced at least something from this effort. I understand the frustration, we have all been there. Myself, I appreciate the challenge of trying to make something presentable from older models, especially as the subjects can be so much more diverse than currently available, ie endless spitfires...... I recently completed a build of the re-released Airfix Hawker Demon, a very old kit, but satisfying to complete with modernish decal quality and an unusual subject, even though aligning the overly thick wing struts was so frustrating, I eventually gave up and simply glued them in place where they were, filling and sanding the original fixing holes as no way were they going in there! Keep up the good work, and never get disheartened. Since the 15 years plus I have rediscovered modeling, I have made similar mistakes to your use of the spray varnish, just learn and move on to the next build. Reassuringly therapeutic in these difficult times.

This is model I build more than 3 times. I buy few from ZTS Plastyk and few from MisterCraft, they are exactly the same but ZTS is cheaper. It is great because there is a lot of modeling work to do with it. Sanding, cutting and scribing :D You need to think twice befire you glue something because no parts fit together as intended. But because there is only few parts make its rather quick to build. Painting schema is also easy (best colours for it are from Hataka - Dark Polish Khaki is the proper one). Glad you didn't try the A version as the single tale is even harder to do and require lot of plastic to be cut from the tail. Great video! I enjoy your fight with this model! :)

I have 3 Mister Hobby kits. 2 were so bad I ended up putting them together and using them as paint mules ( and they have been invaluable for this in fairness as I was in finishing techniques experimental mode at the time), and I have the Fairey Fulmar (an old Revell reboxed kit). Haven't started it yet but by Mister Hobby's standards this looks like one of the better ones. Could be a nice build with a bit of luck.

Considering this kit being God-awful you really did a brilliant job. On a forum called SAS~1946 which I'm on I wanted a recommendation for what kit to do next, because I love doing WWII/Cold War models I was up for any suggestion. However one of my friends on the forum actually suggested this one, fortunately after having the suggestion I went to look for a Mistercraft review and your video was the ticket to me saying a big NO to making it as well as buying it. I built an F-4 Phantom in 1/72 scale that came with optional battle damage. I was about 10. That kit hassled me & refused to go together without a fight. At the end some stray glue was about on the kit & caused a fumble & the kit fell to the floor & practically every piece broke apart. Temper temper temper as I stamped that kit into the linoleum. Three dollars & the time up the bloody sparf.

I've purchased this kit today and I was very aware of it's limitations but that being said It's an unusual model and I'm looking forward to the build. I must admit to liking cheaper kits because it allows a certain amount of scratch building which comes from enjoyable research. I use Scalemates to download a plan of a more expensive model or one in 1/48 which allows me to scratch build the detail into a cheaper 1/72 kit. Well done with the build and paint job.

For this moment we accepting that light khaki we use on fighters, medium on light bombers and dark on medium bombers. we can only guess the real colors. the same problems we had with polish panzer force or painting of insurgent vehicles. in the war we lost too much documentation and the captured vehicles were repainted

Matt, I just realized you listed the Fulmar above! Sorry about that, I just plain missed it. From what I have read it got some pretty good reviews, but there are two areas that people had issues with. The wing root seam is not that great and can use some extra care or filling. The other is the panel lines in the nose are a bit off (that doesn't bother me enough to fill and re-scribe it). But for £5.00 I think it is a great value.

@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 4 жыл бұрын
Ah, see I've had feedback recently that people don't like background music during the build . . .It's a bit of a sticky subject - in my early videos I used to put music, and people hated it. Now it seems that people want it again . . . the current system is kinda a bit of a compromise
@MisterHampshire
@MisterHampshire 4 жыл бұрын
No no no no no no no. I for one find background music totally unnecessary and incredibly distracting. It adds nothing to the video, in fact all lt does is constantly fight the narration, the whole point of videos like this. For me at least, there is absolutely no need for it and extremely irritating. These videos are great since there is no unnecessary background music which I have to stop watching after a few moments if there is.

Not so bad build of a very crude kit. The only good thing about Mistercraft is that they have rarer Planes. Beside the a bit crude paintjob and some gaps a good job of a pretty bad kit. A word to cheap Spray cans i think it is better to spend a bit more for better quality. If you fill the gaps next time this Mistercrft will be really better. In my mind Mistercraft kits are for advanced modellers to get a better result, but frustrating for beginners.

If you spend a little more time, use putty and sanding stick, more knife, proper colours and do not finish with total disaster with varnish in spray it could be nice model. But I guess you chose to build it as is. I have few PZL-37 from early production (blue plastic, very good transparent parts) and quality is much better than after four decades of using this molding forms. It is simple but nice model. Most of Polish modellars had started their journey building only few commonly available models (PZL-37, JAK-1, IL-2m3, RWD-14, RWD-8, PZL-23, PZL P.11 and few gliders). Sometimes there were also Czechoslovakian models and Matchboxes in shops dedicated for scout boys :). By the way, your voice sounds very good. It was pleasure to hear you during all movie.

It seems that Łoś was an ok bomber for its time, so was pzl p-11, but there were too few of them and their time was somewhere around 1920, therefore they were a bit outclassed by things like 109s, he-111s, even hurricanes, not to mention the first spitfires and newer 109s which appeared around early 1940. After the fall of Poland, a few remaining polish aircraft was used mainly for testing and as trainers by luftwaffe or by few other airforces. Some countries did buy a few of Łoś when it came out before war, and I think it might've even inspired some early war bombers. But they were never used on any bigger scale, therefore being somewhat forgotten by history
