Again, one of my favorites from the masters, Mitchell and Webb.
Their version is called "Talent Dredge" but that didn't seem very friendly for people searching for the clip.
You can watch That Mitchell and Webb Look on Hulu or Netflix streaming and a bunch of other places.

Its ironic because one premise of the sketch is that you normally need to put in some hard work before achieving something. That's sort of the way with kids as well, but the hard work happens after the 'achievement' rather than before.....

@@weswheel4834 I wouldn't call a basic biological function an "achievement"...there are trailer parks full of welfare babies that will attest to that - raising functional, contributing adults is the achievement. Nearly anybody can pump out a few kids, that's no achievement.

This led to the most successful writing duo British comedy has ever seen - Heart and Wine.

This was actually referencing Britain's Pop Idol, I just renamed it to American Idol since I figured more US people would find it that way. Since most M&W fans in the UK have probably already seen the sketch, just spreading the M&W love the best I can.

That might be but all of those shows have the same stereotype which I first got to know in the USA. Here in Germany the young "talents" come and think giving their best is enough but the jury (luckily) consists of 1 or two people who don't hide behind pink fog and ram the blind into the ground.

Why do you have this listed as American Idol. They never name the program in the sketch and I sincerly doubt that Mitchell and Webb do a sketch of a spin off when the base program covers all they need.

The fact that the comments are full of of people thinking this is about Americans when the sketch is actually a parody of British Idol really shows the British attitude of projecting all their own faults on Americans while pretending they don't share them.

Still though, Pop Idol started in the UK, as did X Factor and Britain's Got Talent. The US has plenty to answer for but those programs are not on the list.

Problem with this sketch, is that it's pretty standard to employ a judge who does exactly that and the audience can have the pleasure of seeing people ripped down, just like we did, except in real life and on a regular basis

I'm not proud of it, but we invented all that Factor/Idol/Got Talent rubbish and then shipped it to other countries. Besides, this segment was originally called Talent Dredge but, as the uploader explained, changing it to American Idol was a shrewd move intended to introduce Americans to the the comedy genius of M&W. Not everything that exists in the universe is intended to be an insult to America, mate. Just, you know, chill off and stop being such a doosh sack, or whatever.
