@djash2000 I dont see how; considering the sketch was originally shown as intended, without bleeping. Censors dont add to the quality of a piece when the original writers did not include it.

@eamurdock As far as I've noticed, it's just seen as so distinctly British that rather than offensive it becomes endearing. Plus, "wank" shares its connotation with "jerk", which is used and universally accepted here as a benign preliminary cuss.

@smaginn So Oo-er Missus is the same as "Oh! Err... Mrs!". There are some movies UK movies from the 50s to 70s called "Carry On". When an attractive woman would say a double entendre, a guy would get flustered, say "oo-er missus" and call attention to the entendre. So the joke here is that Mitchell is saying "I think it's best you use the rear entrance and leave through the back passage". Webb is trying his best to do a double entendre but it would only work if a female said it.

@beepandpop he says oo, er, missus.. from the carry on films.
@randomguy63411 жыл бұрын
It's just a noise, like uh-oh, and used in a similar way. Like in a cheap comedy show, when something bad happens the characters turn to camera and give a chorus of, say, 'uh-oh spaghettios!' the expression 'ooh er, missus' is used in a similar way to highlight innuendo. It's a reference to the cheap and lazy British sex comedies of the 1970s. (As is the whole sketch.)

@drizzt7654 This was broadcast on BBC America. In America the term 'wank' isn't particularly offensive. It caused an amusing incident in 1993 when a repeat of 'Mork and Mindy' was shown on a British network and featured a character called Mr Wanker

@smaginn "Oh, er... Mrs!". It's from some British comedy movies loaded with sexual innuendo from the 50s to 70s called "Carry On". When a woman would say an innuendo, a man would get flustered, say "oo-er Missus" and call attention to the innuendo. The joke here is Webb is finally trying to use an innuendo but it doesn't work in the situation as he uses it on a man.

@rlnilson BBC America is a cable/satellite channel. The FCC has no control over cable and satellite, as those are pay services, unlike over-the-air TV and radio. Legally, the only thing stopping, say, Cartoon Network from broadcasting hardcore pornography is the potential loss of advertisers.
@ebiljebus13 жыл бұрын
@rlnilson Most likely. The US doesn't really have a watershed like the UK. Also, from what I can tell, the word 'cock' is a bit nastier in the US than it seems to be in the UK.
@PenneyBack15 жыл бұрын

@TherealMrChristophel14 жыл бұрын
acutally in the uk it means both. interestingly "dork" shares much the same meaning.
@satch23413 жыл бұрын
@ebiljebus No, actually the FCC regulates everything, even cable and satellite. There are certain things you can't say or show on every network, but what is censored varies based on time of airing and viewership. Channels can self-censor as well, which is why the Hallmark Channel (obviously an insanely family friendly station) will edit out mild words like "bastard," but if Cartoon Network broadcast hardcore pornography, as you so ludicrously suggested, they'd face huge fines from the FCC.

Don Imus bleeps words on his radio program. But only the vowels, so you know exactly what the words are. "What the f**k is this sh**t" is even funnier WITH the bleeps. :-D
@richin21239 жыл бұрын
I understand the controversy over why we Americans bleep out the swear words, and how it affects the comedy. But because Americans like me were raised with bleeps instead of the actual words (owing to our more commercially-sponsored television model), the bleeps are just as funny as the words themselves, probably because we get to fill in the blanks mentally, and the BLEEP is as sudden and intrusive as a fart. But it does make me seek out the British originals, and I laugh just as hard at this sketch without the bleeps as I do with them.
