The history of Mitsubishi in Australia can be traced back to the 1960s, although the company only became a brand here in its own right after buying out Chrysler and the American corporation’s local manufacturing facilities. The locally developed Magna, a widened model based on the Japanese front-wheel drive Galant, won numerous awards for its advanced but practical design. Unfortunately for Mitsubishi’s Aussie manufacturing efforts, small export programs and a domestic market that resisted the allure of a front-wheel drive passenger car in favour of well established rear-wheel drive rivals from Ford and GM-H. Mitsubishi closed its Tonsley Park facility in South Australia in 2008, but has succeed in the years since as a full-line importer, primarily selling SUVs and the Triton LCV.

The Magna was an outstanding Australian car, very comfortable with smooth torquey motors. Most people don’t know that many manual equipped Magna’s even out accelerated both Holden and Ford V8’s for several years.

Should've made a Magna Ralliart AWD with supercharged V6 and Magna first Evolution with 2.0 four cylinder turbo intercooler.

My first car was a TN magna SE. Great car. Got many happy years out of it. Was comfortable, powerful enough, had a/c and power steering, and carried 4 adults in comfort. Boot was roomy and it was easy to park.

I have owned 28 Mitsubishi cars since1978. You can say I like them. I have never had an issue with one of them Some travelling over 400,000ks. They have been so very reliable. I Love That Car has been my saying since 1980. Currently I have 3 Mitsubishi Lancers in my driveway. Unfortunately, due to my Health my daily drive has sat in the garage for 4 years while my wife drives her GLS and the daughter drives our CF Black Edition. I still firmly believe the name of the 380 was a reason for its demise. I still believe keeping the name Magna would have given the car a stronger advantage. Magna was known as a strong reliable car. Now with all Australian car manufactures gone we can only wonder what if

First Sigma SE was a stunning looking car when new. I had two local Mitsubishis:- 1985 Colt sedan and a 1990 TP Magna. They may have been just outstanding when new, but a little past it by the time I acquired them. I found the Colts 1-6 Saturn engine impressively powerful and the seats comfortable, making it a reasonable open road car. The Magna felt underpowered, but was saddled with aircon and power steering. It was also a pleasant open roader, but again, a little lacking in torque. I loved the Magnas styling though......very crisp and unique. It couldn't be mistaken for any other car then on the road. Mitsubishi, like the others, closed because they were building cars no longer relevant to the public. The market was shifting to SUV and utes. They had these vehicles in their lineups, but weren't building them locally. Why? You tell me...

The Sigma turbo was pretty fast too. Although the Mitsubishi Starion turbo was Mitsubishi's hero car back then🌟 But even that was humbled next to the Mitsubishi Cordia turbo🔥 Wish Mitsubishi would resurrect the EVO, Starion & Cordia turbo's.

I had a 1989 manual TP Magna GLX wagon, metallic blue with blue interior, poverty pack with carby engine. Even without power steering, it handled great and was only a little heavier to park than a car with power steering. All autos and fuel injected models had power steering as standard.

Still think the 380 was the best made car in Australia. All employees knew it was their last chance, this is backed by customer forums.

I owned one, and I agree. Absolutely fantastic to drive and incredibly comfortable on the highway. The turning circle and interior materials could have been better though.

The third on fourth generations TJ/TL-TW are heaps better than any American 380 nonsense. Drive a TJ VRX or RA or TL/TW VRX AWD

No I think the Magna was tbh. The 380 dropped AWD as an option along with class leading performance, well except for the TRD model but only 20 were made. Plus it's not like the Mitsubishi Magna didn't get a halo model either, it got a halo FWD model & a halo AWD model.

The 380 won many awards the public never knew about for some reason. It was the best Australian built car but i ofter wonder if they just stuck to the Magna name it may have sold a little better.
