If your background vocals sound thin, narrow and just plain uninteresting... I have a simple 3 part process we're going to walk through together to make those background vocals FULL of character. Let's jump in!
The first thing we're going to do is "Clean Them Up." Use some compression, eq, and a de-esser to quickly breathe some life into those backing vocals. iZotope Nectar 3 is GREAT for this process because everything you need to make your background vocals sound better is right inside ONE plugin. It's all "in house" so to speak.
It's important to note that when it comes to mixing background vocals, that you can be much more drastic with how you effect them. How come? Simple- they're not the lead vocal! So don't stress about how they sound if you solo them... remember they're called BACKGROUND vocals for a reason- when everything is playing together you won't notice how dramatic they sound.
In the next step, we're going to "Sauce Them Up." This is the fun one. We're going to use tools like saturation and reverb to give more life, distance and just plain SAUCE to these back vocals.
In the final step, we're going to "Spread Them Out." As we mix background vocals, it's a great idea to move them out of the center, because that's where the lead vocal should sit! We're going to make room for the lead vocal by using a widening tool to spread the background vocals out to the sides. iZotope Nectar 3 has a killer tool for this step called "Dimension."
After your background vocals are sounding saucy to your ears, all that's left to do is adjust them to a good level in your mix and song as a whole!

It's usually the artist and/or producer who decides the song order and the mastering engineer who does the actual editing and sequencing. Is that true that the producer does the decisions where the songs should be in order while the mastering engineer does the actual editing and sequencing or is it both Nathan?

Reading the chapters of a novel/book in the wrong order would be a strange thing to do, but is the running order of an album still important now that you can easily create your own playlists?

GREAT insight Luke. I believe the running order of an album is still important and I imagine artists are still intentional with it. I'm also sure they recognize that people will still pick out their favorites, as they always have. Even before streaming services, audiences have been "play-listing" their favorites. I remember making mash up CD's with my favorite songs from all my favorite artists... now it's just more convenient with the digital streaming services!

In your own words why album sequencing important when recording a studio album 💿 and while listening to a song from beginning to end why every single listener should listen to the song from beginning to end from the very first song the very last song aka opening track to the closing track of a song 🎵 and also In your own words why album sequencing important when recording a studio album 💿 and while listening to a song from beginning to end why every single listener should listen to the song from beginning to end from the very first song the very last song aka opening track to the closing track of a song 🎵?

Nathan I have a music 🎼 🎶 🎵 question 🙋‍♂ In your own words what is album sequencing Nathan this is what grant said about album sequencing I don’t believe album sequencing is a lost art. I still listen to albums from beginning to end and I am not alone. It’s super important!

But it is true to say that fewer people are listening to albums from beginning to end. Many seem to prefer listening to single songs, or a playlist created by themselves or other people. because they are a musician's way of telling a longer form of story. One ☝ way of looking at an album structure. might be the hero's journey a story arc for writers. it starts with the character setting off on an adventure on their journey they cross a threshold out of their old life. into something new there are trials and tribulations until they come face to face with their biggest obstacle death 💀. followed by hopefully rebirth and finally atonement where they return home 🏡 having become a changed person. During album sequencing happening on an album 💿 why songs have to be played from start to end like say my dad Curtiss always would skip ⏭⏭ or rewind ⏪ a song but for me I would play the whole entire song or story example:what’s the frequency Kenneth which is track 1. But then it starts at the very beginning of the song and it starts at 0:00 🕛 and then it ends at 4:38 which is track 12.Why song structure plays a huge part of arrangement during album 💿 sequencing happens when every single songs play from beginning to end? And also when you either skip ⏭ a song or rewind ⏪ a song while it still play from beginning to end?
