If your background vocals sound thin, narrow and just plain uninteresting... I have a simple 3 part process we're going to walk through together to make those background vocals FULL of character. Let's jump in!
The first thing we're going to do is "Clean Them Up." Use some compression, eq, and a de-esser to quickly breathe some life into those backing vocals. iZotope Nectar 3 is GREAT for this process because everything you need to make your background vocals sound better is right inside ONE plugin. It's all "in house" so to speak.
It's important to note that when it comes to mixing background vocals, that you can be much more drastic with how you effect them. How come? Simple- they're not the lead vocal! So don't stress about how they sound if you solo them... remember they're called BACKGROUND vocals for a reason- when everything is playing together you won't notice how dramatic they sound.
In the next step, we're going to "Sauce Them Up." This is the fun one. We're going to use tools like saturation and reverb to give more life, distance and just plain SAUCE to these back vocals.
In the final step, we're going to "Spread Them Out." As we mix background vocals, it's a great idea to move them out of the center, because that's where the lead vocal should sit! We're going to make room for the lead vocal by using a widening tool to spread the background vocals out to the sides. iZotope Nectar 3 has a killer tool for this step called "Dimension."
After your background vocals are sounding saucy to your ears, all that's left to do is adjust them to a good level in your mix and song as a whole!
