I think at some point every acrylic pour artist wonders what happens when you try mixing paints with different pouring mediums?
Today's acrylic pouring experiment I mix Floetrol with white, Liquitex with crimson, glue with crimson, Liquitex with pthalo blue, and glue with pthalo blue, and then do a tree ring pour with a different combination of each set of paints/mediums.
I was not full prepared for the results. Hint, I got a huge white mess and a heck of a lot of cracks and crazes.

Best experiment to date IMO. We've recently decided to make our 4 seasons sun room into a "studio" for me so my family can reclaim their dining table so I decided to try to use up all of the paints I had mixed, having experimented with different mediums and such. I could not understand why some of them cracked and craised and others didn't. This makes PERFECT sense now!

I did one painting when I had glue for a black base coat and floetrol in the colors on top. I tried a swipe that miserably failed because the glue and the floetrol reacted badly. But when I tilted the canvas to let the paint drip off so it would dry quicker the floetrol paint was sitting very distinctly on top and created such a cool effect that I am going to do that again. Sometimes „mistakes“ result in the most interesting pictures…

@@LeftBrainedArtist I did one biiig canvas in that „technique“ (not because I was confident, but because I was out of small canvases) and it turned out nice enough that I kind of like it. Looks nothing like a pour, more like abstract art… The only problem that I had was that I mixed too much water in the black glue basecoat (at least I think that was the problem), so there are a few spots where the white canvas shines through. But the other paints (that are much thicker) run over it with cracks and creases and a lot of movement, so that it doesn’t even look bad that the canvas shines a bit through.. I am just going to tell that I wanted it that way and that it was an „artists choice“.. 😅 Next time I might try it on a black primed canvas (if I try it again) 🤔

Most student level acrylics + will keep 4-5 years if sealed. If not sealed, your mileage may vary. Pour some out and mix it around a bit. If lumpy, I would throw it out. It might be slightly separated but if it mixes back together that should be fine. Super dry can be fixed by adding water. As long as it is creamy when you stir and no lumps again you should be good.

Some do but most integrate just fine. It's when each paint has a different concoction of medium that things start to get interesting. I might try adding a little floetrol to my white mixture of just glue next time and then try again. I hope I'd get the cloudiness happening but we'll have to see.

I mix the mediums together as a single PM and have no issues. I started out Floetrol only, then started adding in a bit of Liquitex PM just to give it some shine, since Floetrol dries so flat. Then I bought glue and didn't like it on its own. Instead of throwing it away, I add in aboit 30% glue to my Floetrol and then a dollop of the Liquitex, add some water and then do my paints. Haven't had any issues with cracking or crazing

From what i can work out there are three types of Flotrol, australian US, and eu, types, the australian one is for acrylic paint !! the other two are for latex paints, the aussie one has acetone or something like it, it makes cells!! Please don,t take my word for it,look it up for yourselves!!
@LeftBrainedArtist

They are all made from the same company and for the same purpose, to condition paint (generally latex) so you don't get brush marks. Floetrol wasn't made specificaly for pouring, but has been found to be useful as a substitute pouring medium. The aussie floetrol definitely has some sort of additive that creates cells better than the US or EU versions that if definitely true.

Hi David, what would cause cells to sink? And when I tried to run a marble through the painting it just rolled all the pain off! I am using your glue/water medium with silicone and a shot of Australian floetrol as per Gilly Kube. I tried using a dry canvas and one with house paint - I also got a film on top of the paint that I had to remove. I’m waiting to see how they dry. Maybe as you say, I shouldn’t mix too many things (Floetrol with glue) until I’m more experienced.

If you mix them together that is fine. It's when one paint only has one and the other paint only has another that makes them have strange interactions Dolores. So if you are mixing ALPM and Floetrol and paint (always the same mixture) then you shouldn't need to worry about this. Bug if say the blue was mixed with ALPM and the green was with Floetrol that is where the problems start.
