My friend and I both used M. Graham paints in our palettes for 2 semesters and we never had any problems. We were in a humid state and all we did was made sure there wasn't any extra water in the wells. We sopped up any extra water with the corner of a paper towel and we were set.

I think you did -- and are doing -- yourself a huge favor by ordering and using this set of paints. The pigments are so much better, and you will learn how to work with high quality paints right away, instead of "graduating" from lower quality paints and needing to learn the properties of high quality paints just as you are more confident in the images that you actually want to paint. You definitely did the right thing here by buying the M. Graham/Steve Mitchell set.

I have noticed the M. Graham stays in due to that honey. My DS, which I also love, hardens and literally falls out as a hard mass especially when the individual spots are not fully filled. I've had the same problem with DS and WN way too often. And I am fanatical about setting up pans properly. I threw my WN away in a rage one day and converted completely to Schmincke on the advice of a friend and painted for years with no problem. I am told that that is because they mill more finely. I also had no more problem with excess binder pouring into my pans on first opening WN and (some colors of)=DS. Sometimes the true cost of a brand is not apparent at the outset. My MG have been completely problem free and the texture is so luscious to use.

I live in southeast Alaska which is a humid, temperate rainforest, and rains most days of the year but fairly cool, our temperature rarely goes over 80°F. I initially had issues with cobalt teal running in an aluminum palette much like the smaller plastic one in the video. I put my oven rack to the highest shelf and I put the palette in there overnight with just the oven light on. This is what I also do for proofing bread or stuff that requires 80-90° if I don't give the paint that warm and drier environment, it's just too humid and cool here for it to dry out in pans. But just like you say, dried gum texture is the aim. Once I get that texture it never liquifies in the pan to it being runny again but rewets ideally. I do sometimes, like especially for viridian or in plastic pans rather than wells, need to leave it multiple nights in the oven to give it that drying time. I don't ever use heat beyond the oven light, but this seems to do the trick here in this climate, which might be seasonally like different times of year elsewhere.

Oh, yes!!! I started out, when I finally took lessons, with very good paint. I was done with the cheap stuff, although I used a couple of Van Gogh for years. Dan Smith was on my way to my cousin's so I have a LOT of DS! But, even going to lessons and plein air classes in the Columbia River Gorge, I used my huge plastic palette. Until I was finished with a painting, there was no wiping. I NEEDED some of those bits! My preference would be French Ultramarine, and probably M.Graham's viridian - because every other viridian would not rewet properly. I love being able to lift and making fluffy white clouds meant lifting. Health problems have made painting more difficult, but I'm determined to get back to painting instead of just sketching again!!! I do live in paint land - M.Graham is a 20 minute ride down I-205 south from me! I've driven by many times, but it is tiny, so no visitors. :'( I LOVE mixing!!! I would love to get a butcher's tray that is completely flat, like yours! Where did you find it?

Regarding the viscosity of M. Graham watercolours: solution - dehydrators. I love these paints. I live in a part of New Zealand that is almost tropical, frequently affected by "atmospheric rivers". Very wet (but warm) sometimes. I have resolved the runny viscosity problem of the paints in my palette by always keeping a couple of little packets of dehydration crystals that I always find in food packets (and keep for all sorts of reuse). WORKS.
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor Жыл бұрын
Letting them thoroughly dry is key. I live in the SE US and we are frequently very humid in summer. Never had a problem with them saying runny. Most people just don't let the palette dry sufficiently before closing it up. I will wait a week or more sometimes, leaving it to the open air after a fresh pour.
@wmolijn8637
@wmolijn8637 Жыл бұрын
@@mindofwatercolor Absolutely true: letting them thoroughly dry is key. Once dry tho, keeping them that way is the fun bit (the open-air humidity here can slowly but surely reactivate the honey humectant): enter my trusty little dehydration crystal packs; no rocket science involved. The honey in these paints, apart from terrific pigment load, is what makes these paints such a joy to work with, I find. And I would choose a paint that rewets in a blink any day over stuff which almost needs a scrubber to activate... or patience. I used to just always leave the palette open between usage, with a paper towel lightly draped over (not in contact) to protect it from light. But no matter what - couldn't keep the dog hair out! lol.

I wanted to let you know my experience with Prussian Blue. It is my favorite blue colour, and biggest sadness. It is true that it comes back to full strength after being put in the dark for a while, but normally people don't do that for the art on the wall. Aside from that, the biggest issue is that it fades very significantly in mixes and does Not come back! I didn't want to accept it's fugitive status, so I tested clean swatch of it as well as mixes with magenta and yellow at the same time - both mixes shifted by ~30% yellower and pinker respectively, and didn't go back like the blue on its own. In my student set of paints it was most noticeable fading excluding Alizarin. It can't be rated lightfast I when it fades in mixes so badly. On a more fun note though, I make a granulating alternative to Prussian blue by mixing a bit of Phthalo green to Ultramarine deep. Indanthrone blue works as well.
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 3 жыл бұрын
...and yet it is rated light fast by pretty much every reputable manufacturer. People also don't display art (or shouldn't) in bright sunlight. If I have to put it back in the dark to recover the color then I had it improperly displayed to begin with. If its art you really care about and will display, treat every color and pigment as though it will fade. Thats what conservators do. Heat and humidity will also affect fading. Heat is a major factor in sunlight fading tests.

Artists have used honey in watercolor paints for a long time, apparently. I'm really pleased with my M. Graham paints. The thing that convinced me to buy them originally was working with Cotman paints loaned to me by a friend and watching a number of Mind of Watercolor videos. When I saw how much better his paintings look with M. Graham paints, I purchased them instead of Cotman.

i live in Central Florida (about ten minutes from the ocean) and i was hesitant at first as well. but so far i’ve had no issues with any of my m. graham paints becoming liquid or oozing. i have them in an enamel-coated aluminum palette and they’re stuck in there just fine! still very sticky, and if you touch them, you do get paint on your fingers, but they aren’t wet by any means. i let the palette dry out on my desk for about a week before i started using them, and i let the palette stay open to dry for about half an hour after i’m done using them. if you’re hesitant, i highly recommend them. they’re some of the cleanest pigments i’ve ever used, and they flow and move wonderfully too!

These are really beautiful colors, at the end mostly. The deep or dark olive green, Wow! And you just popped in the comment that if you're painting nature, except for flowers then you'll be using these greys and blacks that are leaning one way or another. That's why people think you're such a good teacher 'cause you seem to answer the questions that come up in peoples minds during a video. I'm getting to know my colors now, and they consist of this 10 tube palette. You have really sound and logical advice too. I'm thinking that I'll be safer with fewer colors, especially if I'm painting nature and it's animal life including humanity. My tendency is be be fearful and sparing with my paints but I should rather just make pretty pictures and go all out without being wasteful. Why make a pinting with dull colors? That won't make anyone happy, except the depressed. lol

Really liked this video. A couple of years ago I made the mistake of cleaning the dried paint off my pallet and I was suddenly "lost." Watching this video I realized I had been doing what you talked about and used the wonderful mixes that were on my pallet. A friend would ask me what color I used for something and I would point to some random mix and say, "This one." I would have no idea what colors were used to make it.

I purchased the palette and butcher tray. I have the palette; still waiting for Amazon to deliver the tray. I set up the palette with the same colors, but adding burnt sienna Per 7 in between the red iron oxide and neutral tint for 11 colors total. I am having fun following along with this tutorial. It is the first time I have mixed watercolors. I got in trouble with the neutral tint -- I couldn't see how much was getting on my brush and it turned out to be way too much. I am using small square white ceramic plates to mix my colors in. I added too much neutral tint about 3 times so I cleaned off the tray 3 times and started again from scratch. It is fun! I still need to do the mixes with phthalocyanine green that are near the end of this video. I feel like I am starting to learn how to work with watercolors.

It was Steve Quiller that first started to get me to understand the basic role of 'neutrals', ie that too much colour is tiring to the eye. Plus an appreciation for the 'near neutral' colours, rather than pure greys.

I also have had similar issues with Nickel Titanate Yellow in every professional paint brand I've bought. I don't like non-honey paints in general now because they don't dry up and fall out of the pans. Thank you for mixing these colors together! I tried keeping track of ratios for mixing but I never refer to them either I always mix on the fly as well.

Love them! But I noticed I changed the way I use them compared to other always flat pallets. I use less water when I dip into the paint wells and add it later in the mixing well. Love these colors. The water left in the pans may run a little if you have to put it away in a hurry. I usually shake out the water before I pack up and wrap the palette up in a rag. Sometimes I'll even put a folded paper towel inside the palette before closing so watery paint doesn't cross contaminate colors. As soon as I get home I open it up and let it dry. Works like a charm

It is fun to watch you get all hyped up when you see all the colors happening right before your eyes on the pallet. I will have to practice this more, because most of the time, my pallet turns to mud rather then breath taking brilliance of shades of color. It could be the starter watercolor paint that I use, it seems to me that the more I try to mix and bend the colors, the more and more it becomes mud. You did give me a very big tip in your demo here, and that you said these pigments are all considered Transparent colors, I think most of my colors in the tube are semi or opaque colors. I will get some transparent, one pigment colors, and try those. I think my only transparent, is my ultramarine blue I just got in a small tester tube. Thanks for your great lessons and demo's, I really love them.

Steve has some great videos on avoiding mud and on using complementary colors, which may be part of your problem. Overmixing will also make an over-neutralized mix even worse. I think you're right that you need transparent colors. Using student quality paint is a big contributor to mud because it has so little actual color in the tube...mostly cheap filler and binder. This is also the reason why they perform strangely on the paper. I often think that they are misnamed because you'd have to be a pro to paint well with them. It might help your guilty conscience about spending money on paint to realize that student paints are really toys and that decent paints aren't only for professionals. They simply cost whatever they cost. (we all have a guilty conscience about something!) There are ways to bring the cost of professional paints down: 1. Use a limited oalette and get good recommendations from artists before you buy a single tube. You should learn what every single in a paint label means and which considerations are important to you. But that takes time. To get started more quickly, you could look for a good "mixing palette" recommended by an artist. Not all palettes bearing artists names are meant to be general mixing palettes. A mixing palette will be reliable in all situations and it will help you to mix easily. In a mixing palette chosen by an artist, every tube is chosen for how well it plays with the others in that palette . Steve's is a good mixing palette ....,and the price for the set is really low. You could go without needing another color for years. Jane Blundell also has a slightly larger mixing palette for DS. 2, Online stores often have discounts....drop in frequently. 3. Learn about mixing in a systematic way, You can waste a lot of money and, worse, time if you don't know how to mix. Find free youtube instruction that is well-organized. It's easier to learn if you mix while watching and stop to think about what you're seeing happening in your palette. If you become a good mixer you could get by with as few as seven paints ( a cool and a warm of each primary and a dark, like Payne's Gray or Neutral Tint.....but you will only get the mixes that you want with professional paints. You can always add more colors later, but many professional painters don't have much more than these seven in their palettes. Have a great painting summer.

@@eileent8989 WOW .. thank you for all that great information and advice. I also like the fact of how easy the paints re-wet after they have set in the pallet. I have mixed in some glycerin into my cheap paints to keep them from cracking up when they dry. At some point they just fall out of my pallet like little chunks of broken glass, and my gosh I have to keep a spray mist bottle of water on hand ( comes in handy for wetting my paper or moving around pigments on the paper) to constantly keep the paint in the pallet wet enough to get the paint out. Watching how easy he was able to load up his brush with deep rich color blew my mind. I can only get that if I put out fresh paint on the pallet and use it before it starts to dry. I really need to get better paint. 100 dollars for 10 tubes is a great price for the large tubes of paint you get. I was blown away by the olive green he was able to make with this set, I have tried to duplicate it with my yellow and blue paints with no luck. I can get sorta close but never a perfect clean olive green like M. Graham colors provided. Thanks again for your advice and reply. You have helped a lot.

for me it was the other way around with the granulation :-). I have a book after which I tried to learn watercolors and the authors used Daler Rowney watercolors and I could only buy Schmincke watercolors in town. I thought that my watercolor paints were broken because I couldn't manage these special textures with them, and the application of my Schmincke Akademie paints was much too smooth for that.

I use m graham exclusively - they are my favorite. Live in Alaska. My paints do very well in palettes- store upside down, toted around in bags, etc. The only "problem" colors I have are the cobalts (teal and green, blue does ok) - they tend to be very runny and take substantially longer to dry than the others. The cobalt green got kicked from my palette, the cobalt teal is too pretty (she's my princess color i guess and gets pampered to stay) XD.

Fun stuff! thanks for mentioning to leave the pallet open for a long time to dry. I found I needed to do that with M.Graham but because I did I haven't had oozing issues! Also Prussian Blue regains its colour in darkness is something I'm personally testing now! I suppose that still makes it light-fast and usable just warn everyone to recharge fade in the shadows. I'm keeping one in a drawer and one up in direct sun on the window for a while then I'll put the faded one somewhere dark and leave it for a while and see it come back. I'm curious how long it will need to sit in darkness to 'recharge'? I think I'll record for a video... Hi Steve! Jim again from Madrid (Spain). I do have a question on MGraham based on their binder (honey). FYI, MGraham us not easy to purchase in Europe since it's a US Brand (import/export issues and price!!!) But my question is the following... Since It's a "Honey" based binder with pigment... does it have similar problems like Gouasche paints based on honey binders, where mold tends to damage the paint when stored on a palette if not used for a while (or after a which period of time approximately)??? Thanks for sharing your expertise and knowledge! Cheers from Spain!
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor Жыл бұрын
Honey is not the binder. M. Graham uses Gum Arabic just like other watercolors but includes honey as a humidifying agent and preservative. Honey is not the cause of mold. In fact most honey-based paints are less likely to mold than others since its a natural preservative. Mold is caused by prolonged, excessive moisture held in a tightly enclosed palette. Palettes should be left open to completely dry out before storing. Some brands include other fillers and additives that can also promote mold but honey itself is not a contributing cause.

@@mindofwatercolor Thank you Steve for the clarification (I knew I could count on you!)... I raised my concern because after watching many, many youtube videos both on watercolors and Gouache, many people talk about honey being one of the causes for more mold issues on air tight palettes and it was never clear to me what the actual reason was. So again, thank you for your information. And from it I understand then that any paint palette (watercolor or Gouache - I don't know anything about Oil or Acrylic - at least not yet) that is stored for a longer period of time without use, if it is not properly dry first then mold issues may (not always, but it increases the probability) occur independently of the brand. Thank you Steve for the clarification (I knew I could count on you!)... Cheers from Spain!!!!
