The process and considerations in swapping a MK 4 VW from an automatic to manual transmission. First of 3 video series, covers things to think about, parts needed, tear down. A little discussion about where to get parts, ECU considerations etc.

I'm a little late to the party. But I just wanted to Thank you for all the thoughtful and very informative videos! I've been wanting to swap my automatic transmission mostly because its drivability is awful, and its previous owner damaged it, I've been hearing about the manual transmissions being a better option. After searching many places I found this video to be more helpful and I appreciate it, now I know where to start to do the job right. You solidified my decision! Thank you again!

Thank you for all the thought and effort that it clearly took to put these videos together for others! I ran across these only recently after doing a DSG to 6-speed conversion on my 2006 TDI JETTA back in 2016 and THAT was after a failed attempt to "fix" the bad DSG.... Worked great for few months while I attempted sorting through all the TCU triggered faults in the ECU ABS etc.... Long story short, had to park and moved but I'm back to the car 4 years later and wanting to finally resolve so I can SMOG and use as DD. Here's my question: I've got the full VCDS setup and am heartened you comment (@24:30) that with the TDI you don't need to reflash the ECU if it's a TDI: you just need to re-code the ECU for manual with VCDS. Your conversion is on an MK4 but mine is an MK5..... I'm thinking this might NOT be the case for MK5 TDI ECU?? In other words, I might have to either re-flash my TDI ECU or replace with new ECU (& then obviously deal with IMMO stuff) What's your thoughts? Thanks 😊
@hestermannmotorwerks
@hestermannmotorwerks 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry but Honestly I have no idea. The software/canbus system for the MK 5 is kind of a nightmare. I really don't know if you can recode the MK5 TDI ECU. I have a MK 5 TDI but it came as a manual so I haven't had to try recoding it. Maybe try asking on VW vortex?

The easiest way to deal with that oversize brake pedal is to just drill out the spot welds, the smaller pad is actually underneath the large pad, but I actually prefer to swap out the pedal arm that the video talked about needing a special tool for......but you can do it without the tool by heating the nylon up with a heat gun then use a small screwdriver to spread it a bit while your pulling and it will just slip right off that ball rod going to the master cylinder....great video!

That can be tricky buying someone else's unfinished project. Even when they do a good job, it can be challenging figuring out exactly what they did or didn't get done. As far as your keys go, getting a fob programmed to unlock the doors on your ignition key is one way to tackle it. If you take it to the dealer, they can get you new lock core for the door that matches your ignition key. Might want to get one for the rear hatch also. Not sure how much they charge though

@hestermannmotorwerks 3 жыл бұрын
I highly recommend a TDI trans for correct gearing. You can physically bolt on and use a 2.0 or a 1.8t trans but unless you are trying to adjust gearing for another modification (maybe really big wheels) I think you will be disappointed with the gearing. You can use the trans of a BEW or an ALH engine and it will be perfect.

I’m finishing up a 6 speed swap on my vr6, and I’m stumped. When I went to start it for the first time, the key rotated, and nothing happened. No clicking, and I tested the starter and it’s working fine. I by passed the neutral switch for the clutch pedal, and I wired the interlock relay. I’ve checked all my grounds and they’re all on and grounded

Thank you for the video.. i have vw sharan 2006 i am 2nd owner of the vehicle and i just knew recently that he swapped the transmission from A/T to manuall but since i am driving this car for almost 5 years the car caused lot's of troubles since the swap was bad.. they swapped only the transmission but the ecu and wiring still the same as A/T.. So right now my problem the car lacks power and feels like it doesn't have enough torque to move.. none of the technicians could solve my problem.. one more thing during the winter when i start the car the accelerator pedal doesn't work unless the car warms up.. couldn't identify the cause of the issue
@hestermannmotorwerks
@hestermannmotorwerks 2 жыл бұрын
we don't have the Sharan in the US so Im really not familiar with it. It also will depend on what the engine is and what the transmission was. If it is a TDI (BEW or BRM or maybe even the BHM) you should be able to get the ECU recoded to manual transmission by anyone that has VCDS or a similar code reading system. If it is one of the gas (petrol) engines, you have to get the ECU recoded by someone with EEPROM capabilities or swap the ECU. That could be the reason for loss of power but if it has been driving fine before and now is just having the power loss problem, then it isn't the ECU coding. The accelerator pedal issue could be lack of good ground to the engine. I would first try taking the grounding cable off the transmission, cleaning it very well then reinstalling it. It should be on the top forward bolt of the transmission. If it isn't there, then you will have to follow it from the battery negative cable. It should go down to a bolt under the battery tray where it bolts to the body, then continue over to the engine. Common for people to forget the engine/transmission connection when reinstalling a transmission. It attaches in a different place on A/T vs M/T. Make sure it it is making a good connection. Poor grounds will do all kinds of weird stuff!

Mechanically its similar but the electronics/wiring is more complicated. Doing an AWD conversion is possible but you will need a lot of parts and you may have to do some sheet metal fabrication. The floor pans on the AWD models are different to allow space for the driveshaft and rear differential. The fuel tank is different also for the same reason

What transmission do you recommend for a 12v and a 24v, ive got both automatics and i dont know which one fits which
@hestermannmotorwerks
@hestermannmotorwerks Жыл бұрын
I like the 6 speeds (02M) but they are more expensive and the clutch and flywheel and the axles are more expensive also. The 02J 5 speed is a little more robust though so if you are going to build a high horsepower engine, you might want to consider the 5 speed. The VR6 transmissions are different than the other engines. The bolt pattern is different on the VR6 but both the 12 v and the 24V are the same as far as transmission pattern. So any VR6 trans will work for either of them.

you might have to do a little research about gearing but basically the TDI trans will be geared too long for the gas engine. The car will feel low on power. Ever accidentally used the next gear up when driving? Started from a light in 2nd type thing. Maybe not quite as bad as that but it will feel like that. Good news for you is the TDI trans are usually in high demand. You should be able to sell the TDI trans for more than what a gasser trans will cost

The speed sensor wiring is kinda confusing. I would guess that it is missing a link somewhere but your friend may have done all the wiring correctly. It is possible the sensor (or even the connector) is bad. I haven't seen a sensor go bad though. RPM and all the other gauges get their input from different places so that really has nothing to do with the speed circuit

@@brettgrande8992 Ive have had ASR issues but not as a direct result of a trans swap. most common reason is a sensor not reading a wheel magnet. Can be a bad sensor, damaged doing a wheel bearing, or built up metal shavings from someone that goes to the metal on brake pads lol. I have seen a couple that were broken wires from forgetting to unplug them when removing the hub. . I think this issue is not related to your ECU programming. Im not 100% sure on the 1.8T ECU wiring between a Jetta and Beetle. Other than that you have everything you need
@hestermannmotorwerks
@hestermannmotorwerks 2 жыл бұрын
you are probably better off just getting the Jetta ECU reprogramed so you don't have to worry about the IMMO anyway.

All depends on your state. Here in Florida it doesn’t matter. In CA it might not pass smog test even if everything else is good cuz they might say it’s been tampered with

it all depends on where you are and how much you get new. If you get a new clutch, that will cost you a few hundred. But you can buy a wrecked car for $500 and get everything you need if you don't mind using used.

Thanks a million for the great videos, made my swap go smooth as. Just did 02j into a 2001 mk4 1.8t aum. Wiring was almost bang on, and everything else true to the video. Just need to bleed the clutch now and reassemble interior then enjoy it. Thanks again

awesome! glad it was helpful and your swap went well! You may have to bleed the clutch, drive it for a couple days then bleed it again. It can be a bit of a pain

@@hestermannmotorwerks Finally drove it tonight, think there is still a bit of air in the clutch line but she boosts along beautifully 😍 Only issue now is I have no speedo anymore and a VSS code, so will do some diagnosis there
