Wow so MLA is actually a foundational improvement in OLED and doesn't compromise viewing angles at all, that's a surprise. In theory they could still boost brightness even further if they did start to limit viewing angles. (Now I really wonder what would happen to QD-OLED with MLA? Probably 2,000 nits after calibration.)

The next few years will be great for OLED and slowly end the LCD dominance because both LG Display and Samsung Display have to compete and push the envelop every year.. The upgrades LG has brought in the past years are a direct response to the end of their large screen OLED monopoly. I had the opportunity to watch a couple of OLEDs in short succession - a B7 and a C2, both 55in models. You could sort of tell that B7 got a bit dark in brighter scenes, and it's OS was very jerky with HBO Max. C2 was definitely bright enough. I will probably get a 77" C2 or C3 at the end of the year, depending on the price difference between the models - Today the difference between a 77" C1 and C2 is 200€, so that's definitely doable.

I'm not sure but if you search "LG new micro lens array" or similar, there are articles about the sizes with the increased brightness for relevant models which from memory I think include the 55 inch. 65 inch and 77 inch. Don't take my word for it though. I just bought the C2 in December which was my first oled in 48 inch size which is still very large for the bedroom size I have it in. In some ways I regret purchasing that as at the time I didn't know it was 55 inch+ sets that had the increased brightness and now LG seem to be making a very large step up year to year if 60% increase is indeed true. I want to know about the smaller size improvements in brightness but the pixels are too close together in smaller sets for the same amount of brightness increase. Is is heat that means brightness can't be pushed up?

Vincent, is there no information on whether LGD has adjusted the subpixel control for lower refresh rates to prevent VRR-flickering? Or can we still assume that the panels are still only optimized for 120Hz operation?
@90lancaster
@90lancaster Жыл бұрын
I think they direction of technology is towards HIGHER refresh rates. a lower refresh isn't really beneficial in anyway I can think of.. except perhaps trying to get a panel to operate below 40 or 42fps for the purposes of showing 24fps Movies but since doubling works fine I don't really see the need. & it's only really useful for horrible frame rate videogames. which you really don't want anyone being encouraged to make. I agree though VRR Flicker is annoying but I think the move to a 240hz standard might get rid of it.
@hideff4982
@hideff4982 Жыл бұрын
@@90lancaster How should they get rid of it by just increasing the refresh rate to 240hz? Makes no sense. If the subpixel can't match the gamma curve for the entire refresh rate range, you will see flickering. Actually it could be even worse if you increase the refresh rate and you only optimize the gamma curve of the subpixel for 240hz for example. That's why it is still the only option on latest OLEDs to prevent VRR-flickering to set the display to fix 60Hz. With this method you will force the subpixel into a consistent overcharged state. Dark scenes would look constantly raised, which you can fix with the fine tune dark area settings, but it would eliminate nearly all the VRR-flickering which you would normally see if you set the display to 120Hz. Wider refresh rate range with subpixels only optimized for gamma level at a fixed refresh rate = the more VRR flickering you would see.

This may finally be the OLED I might choose to replace my first HDR TV, a Sony x930d. That TV handled highlights and color better than the OLED I got a year later. Last year's OLEDs were the first to match or slightly exceed that capability, while obviously also improving shadows. But I wanted something that would be a significant improvement on the highlight range before considering to replace that screen. Ultimately, TVs are devices that I like to buy for the long term, like gaming consoles, so like a new generation of gaming consoles, I want the upgrade to feel like a massive leap, and this finally appears to be the right step for that. That being said, I'll probably wait a year after it's launch to buy the C3, in order to get it at a cheaper price, as my income is not the greatest at the moment, and that would also allow me more time to save some money.

It certainly is worth waiting for prices to decrease. I think I may wait till black friday this year and replace the set in the living room. I have just bought a C2 for my bedroom but I'm not sure an oled would be best suited for the living room as it can get bright in there. I do hope there is a bug improvement in average picture level is it called? Base brightness? That way u could hopefully use it in the living room.

I would do that too, I bought a LG CX two years ago and I'm really happy with it but those new Meta panels are tempting. They will be really expensive at first for sure, so I might wait a couple of years more to get my hand on one of them, plus we're in some tough times so better save up instead of upgrading too early with a big early-adopter price.

@@TorqueFormulaWon Even my C6 has plenty brightness if I wanted to use it in the living room for SDR content. I calibrate SDR to 175 nits in my bedroom and that's only about half the way it can go. Remember, full field brightness isn't particularly important for real world usage as it is rare for the APL to get bright enough for ABL to matter. Even with a lit room under consideration, if I'm watching HDR content I'm watching in the dark, living room or not.

I don't even know if the CS was just a stop gap model to shift excess stock of certain parts or if they plan to keep making it. It is quite popular as a cheaper alternative to the C2 I feel. This is great news. I was hoping LG was going to respond to QD-OLED and it looks like they've done so. I'm guessing it won't be as bright or have as much colour luminance, we'll have to wait to see a comparison, but it certainly looks impactful enough to make a difference. The technology behind the micro lens array looks quite expensive, so I'm expecting it to be even more pricey than last year's models but lets see.

Not as bright ? Its literally 30 % brighter then the S95B, and even more. The S95B reduces brightness with EACH update, cause the burn in Risk is so high with the brightness it tried to display in the beginning., Also, it updates AUTOMATICALLY; you have to fking disconnect your out of the box TV, from tne Internet if you want the original brightness.

@cun7us
@cun7us Жыл бұрын
@@spartacuscreator that's on paper, you have to see them side-by-side first. The G2 was promised to be 40% brighter than the G1 due to its heatsink, but that's only in small windows or specular highlights. In full screen it's not that much different, maybe 100 nits. Perceptually, that's barely noticeable even when you have them side-by-side. The S95B is considerably brighter than W-OLED (admittedly before the updates), but looks like they've increased it even further with the S95C without limiting, so my comment still stands.
@HeloisGevit
@HeloisGevit Жыл бұрын
@@spartacuscreator S95B is still brighter and has superior colour volume than any WOLED you can buy post updates. The filmmaker mode on the latest firmware is the most accurate it's ever been. Not to defend Samsung's firmware record though, it has been really poor with lots of unresolved bugs still. When the G3 comes out, there will be the S95C, compare it to that not last year's panel.

They're actually still "stuck" at 250nits when displaying 100% White on screen, just like last year's. Could be due to the EU's power regulations and/or just plain heat.The big breakthrough will be when TVs get to 500-600nits at 100% white sustained.

People get obsessed with nits... And they get obsessed with what is by most measures a moderate or even very small difference in resolution or color, which would be impossible to detect unless you had two sets side by side. It's lovely that this information is out there for people who are in the market for a new TV but I find it rather sad so many people will buy a TV in a year later immediately dump it for the next one that comes along, buying into the idea of how manipulated we are by runaway consumerism. Nobody needs to upgrade a TV set that's only a couple years old unless they're doing it for bragging rights.
