Dave, a quick baseball lingo primer 😊⚾️📕: “Home plate” (in front of the catcher) is the only *plate.* The other three bases (e.g., first base, second base, third base) are called *bases or bags* (not plates). The pitcher (player who throws the ball to the batter) stands on the *pitching mound,* or pitcher’s rubber. Thanks for doing this one, y’all! B A S E B A L L season is right around the corner …. 🥰

The George Brett one is legendary. Yankees manager Billy Martin,the greatest curmudgeon ever,had Brett's bat insepected for too much pine tar on the handle,AFTER Brett had just homered. And sure enough,the pine tar was too far up the barrel,making the bat illegal and getting Brett's HR taken down and him called out. And George proceeded to lose his mind. Martin had been waiting for a couple of seasons,for just the right moment,to pull this. Billy never missed a trick.

There are "play reviews" but no reviews for Balls and Strikes. The majority of play reviews are base (bag) reviews. Such as the runner reached first base before the ball has arrived but the umpire called him out. So the batting teams head coach will typically put their hands over their ears to indicate headphones being put on for a review. They also review fair and foul ball plays that may have been called wrong on the field. Homeruns are also reviewed if they believe a homerun was not a homerun or it was a foul ball instead.

The player you saw near the end run out of the dugout was George Brett in the infamous 1983 "Pine Tar" incident. You ARE permitted to put stickum or pine tar to help grip the bat and keep it from flying off but it must stay on the lower part of the handle. Brett a star batter for Kansas City who made the Hall of Fame had just hit a home run for the Royals to put them in the lead late in the game. Yankee Manager Billy Matin saw that the pine tar appeared to go too high on the bat and demanded that the home plate umpire measure the bat and the tar. The umpire ruled the bat to be illegally coated, disallowed the home run AND called Brett out as for using a "doctored" bat which made it the last out of the 9th inning of the game causing the Royals to instantly lose the game as well. Brett had already celebrated and was sitting with his teammates and rushed the Umpire . The play was appealed to head of the league who ruled the home run legitimate since the tar was accidentally too high and had not touched the ball. The match was started over 25 DAYS later with the home run creating a win....

The rule is that using an illegal bat causes a batter to automatically be called out. However, if a bat has excess tar on it, that doesn't make it an "illegal bat" and the only remedy is for the bat to be cleaned of the excess pine tar. The batter should not have been called out.

A strike needs to come across home plate at a height between the batter's knees and shoulders. A pitch is considered "outside" when it misses going over home plate "away" from the batter, and "inside" when it misses going over the plate towards the batter.

The runner at 2:05 is Manny Machado. He's one of the best third basemen in MLB, but he's an obnoxious hothead. There are many examples of him being aggressive for no reason. Why did the pitcher throw the ball at the runner at 3:03? It's because it was Rob Dibble. He was one of the most notorious head cases in baseball. He got in a lot of fights (that he mostly provoked himself), and he did a lot of stupid things that hurt his team. In this case he was angry because of the squeeze bunt, but there's nothing wrong with a play like this in a close game. The run put the Cubs ahead 6 to 4, so there was only one run separating the teams at the time of the play. Dibble was just being his typical idiotic self. At 7:18, it's a classic case of obstruction. A fielder without the ball is not allowed to get in the way of a runner. Not only that, but the runner made it back to the base before he was tagged. The umpire blew it twice: first by not calling obstruction, and second by calling the runner out on the late tag. The announcer (I think it was Tim McCarver) was right that the runner should have been sent to second base on an obstruction call (from the official rules, "The obstructed runner shall be awarded at least one base beyond the base he had last legally touched before the obstruction.") At 11:37, it's the infamous pine tar game. The rules allow pine tar to be applied to a bat up to 18 inches from the handle end. They also disallow the use of a bat that has been altered to make the ball travel farther or "cause an unusual reaction on the baseball." George Brett hit a go-ahead home run, and opposing manager Billy Martin challenged it by pointing out the bat had too much pine tar. The umpires examined the bat and determined that there was pine tar more than 18 inches from the end. They nullified the home run and ejected Brett from the game. As you can see, Brett did not take kindly to it. The Royals (Brett's team) played the remainder of the game under protest. The protest was reviewed by the league office, and they determined that the rule had been misapplied. They allowed Brett's home run to stand, and ordered the rest of the game re-played from that point onwards. There was a different umpiring crew when the teams met to finish the game. Billy Martin tried to claim that Brett should be called out on appeal because he had missed a base when he rounded the bases after the home run. MLB had anticipated this though, and the umpires produced a letter signed by the original crew of umpires saying that Brett had indeed touched all the bases. The next season, MLB amended the rules to clarify that a bat with too much pine tar is not considered illegally modified, and that the only remedy is to remove it from the game (not to eject the batter or negate any play made with that bat).
@egadgo
@egadgo Жыл бұрын
The problem with these ball/strike calls is that these umpires have old eyes, and the players caught on to it. Catchers now do what is called "framing the pitch." When the pitch comes, the catcher (instead of just placing the glove where the pitch is supposed to go) will whip the glove to catch the pitch, then quickly "frame" the glove as if it's in the strike zone. It easily fools most umpires, but some catchers are very bad at it. Look closely next time you watch at the catchers glove. Nearly every catcher these days does this, and some have gotten almost unnoticeable at framing.

Man, imagine baseball without replay. So many irate fans lol. Can you guess what was the last major sport to implement it? It's confounding to me how it took so long. Often times on "breaking balls" (balls that curve down sharply as they cross the plate), it will appear that the pitch is below the strike zone when it enters the catcher's glove. A lot of times it is. What matters is where the ball is when it crosses the plate. Not where it is when the catcher catches it.

Mike, as of now, it's still against the rules to argue balls and strikes, with the umpires. As for the possibility of VAR to make the calls in the future, it's been talked about for many years. The problem will always exist, that a proper camera to do so, would have to be positioned, EXACTLY straight over the outfield wall from home plate. Which would be a little left of where the current cameras are positioned. This would put the pitcher in the way of the view of home plate. It WOULD BE in use, if they could figure out a way to do it. The box that we see on the picture, sometimes, is a little skewed, as we aren't totally squared up with the plate.
@mfree80286
@mfree80286 Жыл бұрын
I need to look it up, but I often wonder exactly where over the plate that box is superimposed. Depth-wise, I mean... if it's calculated as a plane then it's going to miss some on the edges that are breaking hard over the plate.

At first base the ball has to reach the base. No contact with the runner needs to take place. At the other bases contact is not required if a runner is being forced to the next base by a runner behind him. But if there is no forced advance the runner has to be tagged out or contacted.

Baseball may not be the most physically exerting sport but it can still be vicious. While of course a 90+ mph fastball at your knees, ribs or heads is painful enough.. Baseball players (both professionals and pretty much every league past the age of 10 years old) wear metal cleats. If I'm not mistaken football (both American and the worldwide version) wear rubber or plastic cleats. The metal cleats are rounded sure, but when you got someone sliding into you or stepping on your foot? It can absolutely break your skin still Back in the old days. I'm talking early 1900s.. players such as Ty Cobb were known to purposefully sharpen the metal cleats before each game. Many players would also purposefully forgo sliding on the ground and instead do that running jump kick straight into legs. I'm sure MLB players continued till the 70s/80s whenever in terms of sharpening their cleats. But nowadays that would absolutely be outlawed. Same with the fact that you have to slide on the ground now and can't come at the fielder with both of your legs in the air directed at their body. Played first base in highschool and had a guy mistakenly stomp my achilles with his cleats while he was running through the base. Tore my Achilles and lots of bloody lil abrasions

The technology to see whether its a ball or strike exists without umps. Baseball is an old sport that likes tradition and not change. They are also losing popularity in the USA because they are boring and people are tired of seeing umps make bad calls. Also when a player gets pissed at an ump for making a clearly bad call, that player gets kicked out of the game for being rightfully mad.
