The first one is absolutely on Martinez. The umpire let him have his say for nearly *30 seconds* in the middle of an at-bat. How long does he think he's going to get to complain about a call?

Martinez should have been fined and suspended. People are there to watch baseball not watch juvenile tantrums. When will these players learn to stop with the fucking MOUTH. You have been kicked out. @@Be_Honest_Not_Afraid Don't put too much reliance on the pitch track graphic. It is often inaccurate. The first pitch was borderline and the pitches to Cabrera, Martinez and Kinsler were clearly strikes. At the 4:34 mark the asshole announcers say the pitch was low when the graphic, which you rely upon so much, show the pitch touched the zone, which makes it a strike. Everitt was consistent all night and the Tigers should be swinging instead of crying.

The greatest sin an ump can commit is inconsistency - the sports casters kept saying that he was giving the low strike to both sides. As long as an ump is consistent odds are he won't get into any trouble with the league. Everett gave the tigers plenty of chance to argue but enough was enough, and so he started giving the quick hook. The umpire did a good job and I don't know why so many people are talking trash about him.

The sad thing is most of these were borderline, and I'd probably call them strikes as I have a large strike zone. If the ball is touching the zone, then it's probably a strike from me. This Ump has a large zone as well, and all of these calls were close. Was he swayed by the catcher? Maybe. So what if he was? Catchers frame for a reason. For that exact reason, actually. The main question is if he was consistent, which he was.
@SkinnyCow.

The strike zone should be a defined area with no "interpretation" that way everyone can play according to the same rules.

SkinnyCow The strike zone IS set. However, some umpires think that most of the ball has to be in the strike zone, or all of the ball has to be in the strike zone. There are others who think that the ball touching the strike zone is a strike.

+Max Gee the way I call is such. If any part of the ball is touching the zone then it is a strike. I do this in all of the leagues I officiate. USSSA, Grand Slam, Babe Ruth, Dixie Youth, ASA Softball, and High School.

@maxcrss2845 8 жыл бұрын
stevenparker518 I personally think that's a little too liberal with the strike zone. I like it if the center of the ball passes the edge of the strike zone then it's a strike, or if it's close on a pitch running towards the zone.

They're close pitches. Maybe low...but once the umpire starts giving the low strike, you've got to adjust. The pitch to Cabrera is easily a strike and it's not debatable. Not sure what he's thinking. It's slightly inside from the middle of the plate and waist high. On what planet is that not a strike?

agreed, it sucks but as long as umpires exist they will have tendencies regarding the zone and choosing not to adjust is foolish. however at the same time some of these guys just plain and simple know the zone and instinctively won't swing if it's a ball... tiger hitters aren't a pushover and I'm sure that's where the tension arose. Furthermore strange things happen in baseball, for the announcer to tell us "3 is enough" what is that saying? that there's no way they all told him "fuck you up"? that if you've already ejected 3 that means everyone else gets free shots at you?

Maybe this team would do better if they played ball and not worry so much about the umpires. What's Brad ausmus doing now?

Everett was consistent, he gave the players a crap load of time to plead their case, and was very calm and professional throughout. If you think he’s a terrible umpire, you’re gravely mistaken. He did a great job. Can’t argue balls and strikes, especially that close and when his strike zone is the same for both sides

Don't know much about baseball, just started to see some videos here in youtube; but by the umpire's body language and face expressions you can say he knew he was messing up big time.

he was in the umps face, the fact that he put his hands behind his back doesn't change that

Umps body language. He was getting paid for those bad calls. Appears he felt bad about it but what he was about to spend it on was marginally worth it

Ok I know they weren’t all strikes but Cabrera’s was obviously a stoke and he called that pitch the whole game. The 1 thing your coach always says from little league is he’s calling the low pitch so adjust. This is more on the tigers hitters than Everett. After the first one you go into the dugout and say watch the low pitch he’s calling it. If you can’t hit it just foul it off to get a pitch you can hit, and guys like victor, jd, an kinsler can definitely do that

I didn't have a problem with the first ejection. Look, the call might be wrong, but as the announcers said, he let Martinez say his piece, in the middle of an at bat, for something like 20-25 seconds. At some point, you have to resume the game. Martinez disagreed with the call, and the umpire let him have his say, and eventually asked him to get back in the box. Both parties were calm, but the game needs to proceed. A strike one call in the third inning of a 3-1 game with the bases empty is not something that should require several minutes of arguing. It got very comical at the end there, but that first one is on Martinez.

The best you can ask from an umpire is to be consistent. Sure seemed to me that he was being consistent. Absolutely nothing wrong with being a pitcher's umpire if you are consistent and that way with both teams.

Was with the Tigers... but not the Angels. You have multiple batters on one team get called for those borderline pitch’s, but on the other the ump shrugs it off? Gotta be fair in the game.
