No. It's Holliday that didn't know the rule. It wasn't a catch so he had no real reason to go back to 1st base. You can't return to the base unless it was a catch and since it wasn't a catch, Holliday was already out when Moreland threw it to second.

@@blee7442 If Moreland stepped on 1st and got the batter out before throwing to 2nd, that would've eliminated the force at 2nd and Holliday could've safely gone back to 1st. Which is what I said above

But Holliday only THOUGHT Moreland had touched 1st, which is why he went back despite being out already. Then the umpires didn't call interference on him or anything which is why I suggested it was the umpires that didn't know the rule

@@TyrannoJoris_Rex I can see that although, I'm not sure why Holliday would think that Moreland would head for the first base first. Cause unless he was NEXT to the bag, 9 times out of 10 they'll go for the throw at second first instead of the batter.

I thought the same. Kind of thought it had to be on the infield side of the bases to be considered an infield fly.

The infield fly rule states that the batter is automatically out on a pop-up that an infielder can catch with ordinary effort. It does not matter where the infielder catches it (or fails to catch it). The rule says nothing about where the ball is intended to be caught. If the infielder had been stationed deep in the outfield (which was unlikely before, and certainly impossible now due to the defensive shift restrictions), it would still have been an infield fly.

You don't have to go aggro on every little thing. It's possible he said the wrong name by accident and it's possible he thought Perez didn't know the rule because he stopped for a bit. No one's perfect and it's not an insult.

Jon Miller was 100% correct. Neifi Perez clearly did not know the rule. If he did, he would have stayed at third base. In fact, Perez screwed up first by going home. He was only vindicated by the Expos players also screwing up and not knowing they had to tag him and not the plate due to the infield fly rule.

Correct, Neifi did not know the rule. He was gonna be out by a mile if they knew the rule, and then he stood there waiting to get tagged for several seconds. Obvioispy he stepped on the playe either after being screamed at by his teammates or by seeing the umpire not call him out. He didn't know the rule, and it was obvious.

Would Tatis have thrown it to himself? Would he have thrown it to shortstop Orlando Cabrera... who we can also see in the video covering SECOND base? Have you decided (without any evidence in the video whatsoever) that Ron Calloway or Endy Chávez ran in from the outfield to cover third? You've also ignored the points I made in the previous comment: why in the world would a rule-ignorant Perez have tiptoed around Tatis and his teammates to touch the plate if he thought he'd already been forced out? How is it not utterly obvious from his body language upon touching the plate that he knew perfectly well that he'd scored? The level of blind stupidity among KZfaq commenters is staggering to behold.
