Mo'Nique Explains Why She Called Whoopi Goldberg "The Help"

It's was just a couple of years ago when Mo'Nique shocked us all by telling Oprah, along with Tyler Perry and Lee Daniels to suck her [BEEP]. And while we still clutch our pearls just thinking about the biting remarks against her Precious producers, Mo still stands firm in her sentiment.
GET MORE HIPHOLLYWOOD!

Mo'Nique is currently promoting her historic residency at the SLS Hotel in Las Vegas. The Academy Award winning actress is the first Black comedienne to have a residency in Sin City and the honor comes not long after her call to boycott Netflix over gender and racial bias. And it was that call to action that snowballed into a rehashing of her frustrations with Winfrey, Lee and Perry.

For the past approx 60 years, every actor from tom hanks to tyler perry to meryl streep to jamie foxx, they've all done press junkets 'unpaid' (it's not unpaid) they got paid several millions of dollars and press junkets are expected and not drawn up in the contract. so she got them on the technicality that they couldn't sue her and was like GOTCHA BITCHES! I DON'T GOTTA WORK! HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW!!?? and then gets mad when Oprah and Tyler Perry and Whoopi Goldberg (and every other actor in the entire world) call her problematic. See you might think it's the 'truth' lpward90, but what you don't know is why you think that. Ask Lupita if she thinks doing a junket for Us is slavery, is she on Mo's side? No.

@@aeonjoey3dmy understanding is that she was paid very little to play that part, something like 50k and she did the press interviews locally as she was obliged by contract. They asked her to do the international interviews but she wasn’t obligated or compensated for it. All these big stars get paid millions and she, who is a big start and Oscar winner, gets paid so little is embarrassing

What Monique doesn't get is that this 'going with the flow' thing is in every field and in all situations, not just the entertainment field. You often have to pay to play. Some people are too cool for that-and this is what it gets you. Just as an example. Fashion Designer come ups often have to intern for free before they are taken on staff. Some say it's almost like servitude-other people say-that is how the game is played. She thought she was bigger than that already, so she didn't have to pay anymore but not sure it is always for her to decide when this happens. Personally, I do think there is a time when you say 'no more' if you are unfairly in that 'waiting period', so to speak, for too long. Most people agree (except Monique) that she had not finished paying her dues. Had she waited and not gotten her due and then complained-more people would have been on her side. Now, she just looks bad. Her peers are forgiving and I do see them giving her another chance but who knows when it will happen and in entertainment 1 year is like 10 as time passes.

If you’re a young black actress starting out in Hollywood and you could have a meeting about making it in the business with Whoopi or Monique, who would you choose? It’s no coincidence that she fell off when her husband took over. Regina, Taraji, Octavia, Viola among others seem to always get work. And are even leads in films and tv shows. or you know, part of a job. actors who get paid multiple millions of dollars for a role, and who are famous enough to create a draw by talking to press about it - also happen to not be paid per appearance, it's just expected because actors usually want to do that so that the film makes more money - because they get 'points' they get a percentage of the films box office and sales. so her refusing to do the press junkets is literally throwing her own money away and other people's. it's not working for free, it's kind of like working on commission - if she raises awareness about a movie by making appearances, the movie does better in the box office and she makes more money.

I like how she speaks her mind and is brutally honest. But in life sometimes you do a bit extra and work for free to assist. I've worked overtime and didn't ask my employer for more money citing "it's not in my contract". It's good will and opens doors for you for promotions. Working for free is not slavery Mo - slavery is when you are forced and you have no choice.

After they win oscars they either conform to low paychecks that other white actresses don’t get or they just stop working in acting...Monique is standing up for something real...she’s not perfect but it’s true....Whoopi is just going with the flow...she got money but she’s not doing anything to change the system...just my thoughts 😊

Mo’Nique was short-sided in her refusal to promote Precious overseas. Cash is only one form of compensation in life. She wasn’t get paid for the time she sat in the interview chair, but she still would have received a free, all-expenses paid trip to Europe. I just don’t get it…

First, she didn't contract with the screen writer. So that's the first lie she told. Two every essential character of a movie is obligated to participate in the press junkets be it local or international, that is what they are for to promote the film..So for her to say she didn't know is yeah another lie, it was part of her contract. She is the first black person to ever become an EGOT. She has the most Prestigious award in comedy, The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. She’s hosted the Grammys and the Oscar numerous of times. She was actually the first black woman to host the Oscars and the first woman solo host. She was even the highest paid actress one year making 13 million for a film. She was the second black actress to win an Oscar (1990) with the great Hattie McDaniel being the first (1939) . The list goes on and on... She paved the way for Halle Berry !! And Halle Berry is amazing as well but you can’t fact check and not have your facts straight with all do respect! And Monique was not contractually obligated to promote overseas correct and that’s why she didn’t get sued, so I totally agree with that. But let’s love all our black women cause they all kill it!
