Mobil 1 The Grid heads to the Dino Paoli impact wrench factory in Italy to find out how a phone call to Enzo Ferrari led to one company providing wheel guns to all the major race series. The Formula 1 pit stop record fell to 1.88 seconds with Aston Martin Red Bull Racing's stop at this year's German Grand Prix and Dino Paoli continue to innovate in F1, NASCAR and other championships.

To my knowledge, the current NASCAR contract is allotted to Ingersoll Rand. They make the 18,000 (compressed air gas) to 25,000 RPM (compressed nitrogen) Thunder Gun !

Yes sir, this was the case. Mind blowing rpm and 1000 ft pounds of torque. In 2018 NASCAR mandated the Paoli guns supplied and maintained by NASCAR, in an attempt to level the playing field. That was the claim anyway, likely part of it and probably some financial incentive from Paoli as IR wasn't consulted. Not sure about the single lug coming next year, the list of suppliers didn't list equipment suppliers. Likely Paoli however, they are pretty determined to have their name on every gun in motorsports.

Just looked them up, the F1 pit stop version is over $7k, holy crap. I imagine the actual ones cost more though.

Can somebody explain how the socket catches the bolt like that while the impact is already spinning? I’ve tried it on normal wheels and it doesn’t work

I would gusse a special socket is cone shaped to lead the socked on to the nut. They should show a picture of one.

Why would they need it electric, with Pneumatic you have assurance it will work

They do, but not for pit stops. Not nearly enough torque.

Can anyone explain to me why electric tools couldn't be used instead of pneumatic? Why is one better than the other?

Advantage of electric is the portability, however pneumatic is faster and more powerful, and in theory if you want more power you can turn the pressure up (however too much and they explode). Electric is brilliant and they getting more and more powerful every day but the weight of the guns is getting heavier with the technology limitations of today but give it a few more years. also in some championships you're not allowed to use them due to refueling and electric causing sparks and we all know how well those two mix....

Simple my friend electric can go up to 2400rpm Pneumatic run by nitrogen can work on 275 psi and ,18,000 rmp

Mainly weight (pneumatic guns don't have the magnets and windings needed by an electric motor) and torque: a sudden release of high pressure gas will give an enormous impact torque compared to starting an electric motor from idle.

Because its difficult to make an electric motor that not only provides the required torque, but the speed as well. The is a company specialised in lasers and scanners that made an electric motor that can spin at nearly 50k rpms but it has to be the size of a human finger, a pneumatic motor generally is more reliable and powerful than electric ones
