Oh, they have it wrong all right, but they did it on purpose. While the GTX 10 and RTX 20 series were close to desktop levels of performance (previous generations had the M suffix on the laptop GPUs), with RTX 30 series, that's no longer the case, and the RTX 4070 is such a rip off compared to even the desktop 4070, that the laptop 4070 may as well be a 4060 Ti. I really wish AMD put out a Radeon RX 7800M GPU, becuase the laptop I'm getting maxes out at a 7700S because AMD has nothing with more than 8 GB of vRAM...

Well, actually they did give a gap of 25 Watt for boosting your laptop performance. My laptop rtx 4080 manages to keep 2380-2400 mhz boost clock mostly all the time in turbo mode. But yeah, they should call it 4070 Ti(m) based on the core count and performance.

On the most part it did have an advantage, even if it was slight in some games. It's that 1% low that bothers me, what do you think causes that?

Wait till you realize that during pascal and turing the mobile gpu's were very close to desktop versions.

it's not surprising, it has more cores. The only times it loses is when a game it's bottlenecked by the CPU. Test them in 4k and the laptop version would win almost every time.

agreed, I think governments need to stop this dishonest naming. They want 70, 80 and 90 in the name? Fine, then they'd better add some letter to it like they did during M are to clearly diffirentiate them from the desktop GPUs, OR just call them honestly, as these are still basically desktop GPUs(almost the same specs) but named 1 tier higher than what they actually are.

So far my favorite is the Cyberpowerpc Tracer Vii. The mech 17 GP2 is the same machine, although Ekuktronics has the Prema bios and can undervolt the CPU. The bios is locked down on my Tracer. I like it because it is solidly built. All metal. In turbo mode the CPU gets into the low 90s. Balanced mode low to mid 80s. It's fairly quiet, has windows hello camera, advanced Optimus and you can water cool it if you like. I have the cooler but haven't tried it yet. Screen is plenty bright and is 240hz. It has an SD card reader which I wanted. Cyberpowerpc often have sales and 5% off coupons. The only thing was that the first one had dodgy speakers and it's replacement was giving me a blue screen error. This one is great. I also really liked the Legion 7i pro and is probably my second favorite followed by either the GE78HX or GT77 titan. I just feel that it is a shame that the MSI laptops don't have advanced Optimus. The Alienware m18 and m16 ran hot and has that inverted motherboard which I've never been a fan of.

@@tshimologomolope7185 Exactly. Because of dynamic boost, laptop gpu tdp is a giant lie. Even among max tdp laptops you now need to consider if the laptop oem lets you bypass dynamic boost or not. MSI and lenovo allow it on some models. It is so dumb that this ''feature'' LOWERS performance.

@@tshimologomolope7185 Slim laptops do have 4080's and even 4090's. Thinkpad p1, g14/15, etc. If 99% of the time the 4080 doesn't reach 175w, then its a lie. Technically my 3070ti can reach 160w as I've seen it spike up there. Doesn't mean its a 160w gpu. I mean does it make it any better the 4080 can technically reach 175w but basically never will? Also, oem's are starting to put ways to bypass dynamic boost. I don't know why nvidia doesn't get rid of this dumb feature

They certainly used to be, but when it's no faster than the previous generation it is a total shame. The 4080 should have been the 4070, and the 4090 should have been the 4080. All with lower pricing too. Desktop users have always said that their systems are more cost effective, we don't need Nvidia making it harder for us laptop guys. Still, laptops are pretty powerful these days and I won't be upgrading my 4080 machine anytime soon.

Dynamic boost can be its own enemy. I favour giving the GPU its max GPU all the time. We are gaming more at higher resolutions now and the CPU should have less effect.

Yeah, if think I gaming laptops I would only consider the 4060 and 4080. The 4070 is no better than the 3070Ti and the 4090 is too expensive.

1000 and 2000 series were the best era. They used desktop GPUs in laptops(100% the same or even better specs than on desktops) and honest naming, which resulted in laptops being VERY close to desktop GPUs.

Yes, Nvidia should change the names of their laptop GPUs, it just misleads everyone. As for the 7945HX, in my review of the Asus Rog strix scar 17 that had the 7945HX and rtx 4080 the 1% low was 7fps.

Laptops have better cooling these days can't have a 175w with shit cooling nahhhhh just ain't it all u just have to do is get a small stand on the back to lift it up and it will perform just fine less than 80 or 85c on the GPU and CPU depending on the temperature limit but always limit the temps to atleast 75c or 70c or get it a cooling pad and you'll be fine

Whether lifted or not, the mobile GPU will reach 85 degrees when the times are up. You have a test with your friend owns a 4070 destop, your 4080 laptop will outperformance in the first 10 minutes, then tie from 10 to 30, and finally will lose after 30 minutes.

Well if you tune the laptop it won't throttle. My budget nitro 5's 3070ti used to hit 80-85 degrees with just 130w. I repasted and lifted it up and cleaned it so now it pushes 150w and is 70-75 degrees. Even after hours of gaming. Thats with a low end thermal paste. Something like PTM7950 will go even better

Thanks for pointing this out. I looked back at my notes and when I was averaging them out I swapped the BF2042 result around between the 4080m and 4070m. My bad. I've recalculated the difference and the 4080m averages 98 and the 4070 desktop 97. I'll pin a comment
