Interestingly, the credit title for this anime series includes cooperation from the Japan Self-Defense Forces. Especially in the background, fleet commanders and sailors communicate or shout using actual naval military terminology, making it more realistic.

What's not shown in the Origin is the HUGE loss of Zeon soldiers during the first month of the war. Zeon lost their force so much as well that it had to accept the EF favored treaty, which brought Zeon into a war of attrition = EF wins.

@@hishot1078 I mean, look at how the Zeon fleet is completely obliterated by the Federation, maybe we could see more MS being destroyed but still we can see a gigantic loss for Zeon in this battle.

I also like it compared to the Igloo version because well... in Igloo they show the Zeon cruisers turning broadside, presenting a bigger target while NOT increasing their entirely forward centerline firepower towards the enemy. Instead going nose and using the fact that they have 100% of their firepower available directly forward shows just that small bit of consideration that Igloo missed.

@@christbenitez8797 apparently that’s what Ambac is for. It’s basically a system to make minute adjustments to the movement as to conserve as much energy as possible, allthewhile allowing a MS to use extremities as well as keeping the pilot alive

Yeah, I really like how Char increases thrust for a brief moment to mitigate speed loss when he's shooting the anti-ship rifle. I really have no clue what people mean when they say Origin had bad CGI.

@@Coinz8 Well, you can still feel G-force when you're speeding up. You would be fine if you're moving on fast with maintain speed, but sudden movement while speeding up can crush your organ.

other than the glare and iconic sound effect, it's just the fact that Char took a second to slow down and look down on them and then accelerate instead of just outright flying past them. A needless action, but one hell of a flex.

@@nobuffer101 actually, from rewatching the fight, he slowed down to _then_ suddenly boost, so as to damage the Enemy ships without wasting his own Ammo. Char basically tricked the Feddies into destroying one of their own ships by letting them lock onto his Zaku, then Boosted so the missiles would strike the Federation vessel. In another alpha move right after, Char actually used the blast emitted by his thrusters to utterly destroy another Federation Vessel, without firing his rocket launcher, thus conserving Munitions.

In the 0083 Rebellion manga, Gato piloting a High Mobility Type put a trio of ace pilots in GM Customs, the highest performance version of the original GM ever built, to shame singlehandedly. Four years out of date, against much newer, high performance MS with better weapons and armor, outnumbered, and the enemy were all confirmed aces, and the ol' Zaku II still sent them running home with their tails between their legs. The Gelgoog Marine was shown to be on equal or better footing against the GM Custom and GM Cannon II, and nearly destroyed the GP01 Gundam despite it's advanced armor that was even better than the original Gundam. And then you see their performance in the second battle of Torrington... Zeon MS were absolute BEASTS, especially in the hands of an experienced pilot. If only the Feddies hadn't outnumbered them 30 to 1...

Heck, it's flat out stated that if Zeon had introduced the Gelgoog a mere two weeks earlier, they'd still have won the war. The Gelgoog Cannon only had 15 units sent into combat, but they had another 122 ready to assemble on the factory floor. Imagine if they'd managed to get them and the other versions of the Gelgoog assembled and sent to the frontlines, and had a couple more weeks to train pilots to operate them effectively. The majority of Gelgoogs seen in MSG were piloted by rookies going into combat for the first time; 0083 was the first time we saw Gelgoogs piloted by anyone but Char who knew what they were doing, and they were on par with ace pilots in newer MS from the Federation.

@@Swindle1984 The structure of these sorts of narratives is that the hero or anti-hero in his machine scythes through legions of opposing stooge machines whether they be GMs or Zakus because plot requires those machines to die like hotcakes, not because they're inherently poor. Just because Zakus, Doms, Goufs etc all blew up anytime they came up against the RX-78 doesn't make them useless, nor GMs when they come up against the plot-blade of some antagonist like Gato. Of course the GP01 needed to be "almost destroyed", otherwise it's not a believable threat. This is called PLOT. BTW in Gundam lore the GM considered to be a better machine than most of the Zeon suits as it was developed later and based on the RX-78 which pretty much accounted for the entire Zaku army by itself. Also, the bit about them having superior machines but not getting them manufactured in time...that's just the story about German tanks from WW2. BTW, build as many fancy tanks, or suits, as you like it doesn't make up for losing the rest of the war for years.

@@Sinsteel The GM Custom of 0083 is the first Federation mass production MS to match or exceed the Gundam in most respects, whereas the Gelgoog matched or exceeded the Gundam in every respect but armor. Again, had Zeon just had enough time to train pilots for their new MS instead of pushing rookies out in difficult to pilot MS, they could have won against Federation pilots who outnumbered them, had generally better MS, but were noted to be worse pilots overall. Hell, Amuro even canonically stated that if he had gone into combat against Gato, who was piloting a standard Rick Dom at the time, he would have lost. Gato retreated without engaging the Gundam due to a shortage of ammo, then later left his assigned zone to investigate rumors that the Gundam had been destroyed (based on the custom Ball made to look like the Gundam's head), which ironically allowed Amuro to pass through unhindered and engage Dozle Zabi.

According to some other comments, they Only lost 1 Fleet out of 5 (meanwhile Zeon lost Half of their 1 Fleet) This is why General Revils Speech "Zeon is Exhausted" is so important, it was reminding earth that they still had more to work with than Zeon did.

Seems to be a critical victory that made absolutely no difference to the course of the war.

How the fuck are they the good guys? They literally forced Zeon to war, into nuking billions, dropping a colony on Earth, all because they refused to give the colonies the independence they were rightfully owned as per Clause 9 of the UC Charter. The Federation dwarfed Zeon's population numbers and industrial capacity by orders of magnitude, any conventional war Zeon would initiate was a lost cause from the get go if they didn't redress the imbalance in manpower and industrial might (hence the nukes and the colony drop). If you want to blame anyone, blame the Federation leadership for not giving Zeon any other choice. Call what they did a war crime, but the reasons behind the actions were simple, cold calculus of war.

Loum was barely a victory for Zeon even with the mobile suits, but I think the main reason they helped was because they could take out the command ships - for example, at the end you see them seizing the Ananke, which is the flagship of the entire Federation

Well that just wouldn’t be true. Look back at the clear inspiration of WW2 areal engagements on naval warships, one or two bombs in the right place could sink ships, this is why such emphasis was put on anti aircraft cover. Imagine if you made a plane so agile, so quick and so dexterous that it could fight its way through an AA zone and dunk on a capital ship not once but three times? It’s entirely possible, this is why aircraft carriers became Center stage at the end of the war, small planes could penetrate ship formations and wreak havok. Look at the sinking of the Yamato, it doesn’t matter how big your ship is if they can get swarmed by fast planes dropping bombs and torpedos all over it

Radar no longer works at that time and as shown in the vid MS are way more agile and pack bigger punch than ordinary crafts.

Which it nullified the advantage of advanced electronics on feddie ships, giving Zeons a upper hand and launch a surprise attack with thousands of mobile suits. The federation lost more than half of its forces in the battle.

The last missile was fired into an enemy ship's engines and that caused a chain reaction through the ship which destroyed it. Everybody was super impressed with the fact he took out an entire ship with just one missile too

canon wise this takes place at the start of the one year war . well the first major battle that marks the start of the one year war

They were "planning" to pull off another operation british (Colony drop on Jaburo), but it was actually a feint to bring over the main federation fleet and cripple the Fed's space power, hence giving them a chance of fed surrender. In terms of battle, I kinda prefer the origin version, where zeon actually takes the advantage of their ship's smaller frame.

It's probably a carryover of naval traditions, either the Captain is the last person to abandon ship, or they go down with it. Considering the volatility of getting hit, at least what the franchise likes to depicts, they probably concluded that death was preferrable to the humiliation and military consequences (etc court martial) from surviving a ship that was lost when they 'could have been in control'.

Because 1) it was made in the 1970s before the transistor revolution came to point defense (which led to the Phalanx CIWS System and its counterparts), and 2) Minvoski Particles require MRI-grade shielding to protect electronics from becoming slag.

M-Particles makes the Mark 1 Eyeball ineffective. The density is such that inflatable decoys are a legit tactic. Not to mention no human is fast enough to track a moving high-speed target.

If I remember correctly they were radar guided guns, or they were retconned to be, but the Minovsky particles emitted by the reactors of Zeon's Mobile Suits acts like a full spectrum jammer, so guided missiles or AAA Flak can't get a lock (this also is why fighters are ineffective as they can't use their missiles and have to resort to guns to take down a target that's just as maneuverable but has armor heavier than an MBT). So the Feddies did switch over to manned turrets but it is surprisingly hard to hit a target moving at Mach 1.0+ in a three dimensional environment with just your human eyeball and 2 weeks compressed training. Incidentally this is why Mobile Suits often have Melee weapons as it is VERY possible to get in close range of capital ships and just chop off all the gun barrels, cleave the bridge in half, carve off an engine or inflict other catastrophic damage before the AA batteries can get a bead on you.
