Join us while we model a Model Railway Test Track
The Idea comes from a good excuse to improve and explore using scenics. Its one of the fun parts of the hobby and we don't get to do it enough. So i have made the use of this board to have some play time to find out what colours look nice and what doesn't.
Hopefully you will enjoy watching the video as much as I did making it!

That turned out really well Tris. Quite involved for a test track, but I’m guessing, quite therapeutic too. Thanks for sharing. Roy.

Ballast isn't uniform, so your dirty ballast looks great. I do like how Everard Junction paints his ballast once down. A pair of tights over a vacuum cleaner nozzle will save your scatter. You mentioned that you want a swappable backscreen so you can swap the sides you photograph, have you considered painting a board bright green so you can place your test track anywhere in the world

That’s a good idea, I wonder how it would work when in the software as the scenics are green. I will have to have a go 😊

@@OONeal depending on your video editing software you may be able to key in against different colours. Look at the making of any movie, screens are also blue, red or orange.

Nice little project Tris. You could consider a slightly longer version of this as your 'downstairs' layout incorporating shuttle control. I've built a similar layout on my Channel which is on a shelf over my work bench. I can happily work away with the locos running back and forth on their own. It's also doubling up as another exhibition layout with its first outing this weekend! Keep up the great work mate.

I think I should do one as I could keep it in the garage and have alot of fun. My problem is working out what I would like to put on it. I guess something simple. Thank you for taking the time to write a comment. Take care!

You mention losing some of your scenic materials into the vacuum cleaner. You can recover some of the scatter materials by putting a mesh, like a square cut from pair of tights, between the nozzle and the hose. Works best if you have a small hand held one rather than an industrial Dyson, which would just stuck up the whole board 😀Thanks for the channel.
@OONeal

Hello Peter, I do need to do that. I’ve only got a large one so a small Vaccume cleaner would be great to source at some point. Thank you for commenting and take care 😊

Hi Tris, for a test track that is actually a fantastic piece of modelling. The terrain works very well when blended together and looks very realistic. I do enjoy doing scenery but it does take time to get great effects and you have nailed it. All the best to you and yours and have a great festive period my friend, regards, Chris

Nice work Tris. As well as using it as a test track another idea for that would be to use it for model reviews that is what I do with my one. It gives it a bit of scenic interest when displaying the new model. Have a great Christmas. Take care. - Nicholas.

Hello Tris. Ive been watching your shunting yard and test track videos and find them very inspiring. I'm very new to the hobby and made a very novice mistake. I built a 8 x 4 layout but because limits on space it had to go in the spare bedroom against the wall. problem being it's impossible to reach the back of the layout because it's against two walls. I'm now thinking I can cut it half and make a much smaller layout but still have fun. I find your tutorials very easy to follow and the results are brilliant. I live close to the Northampton and Lamport railway and see on the 1st and 2nd of June they along with Tony's Trains are having a model weekend. Are you taking any of your layouts? It would be good tp meet up for a chat.

when vacuuming it up (hoover) go to pound shop for pair of stockings cut the toes off and place over the suction end of hose to capture the loose stuff, you can then reuse more of it

23:04 I have to save up my pocket money for some of the expensive products and it's a shame when it goes to waste although my parents are extremely generous and buy me the static grass and ballast so I'm extremely grateful for that.

Oh and speaking of loosing product I dropped my diorama and the ballast wasn't dry and it made a mess and what happened next destroyed the whole thing! I spent hours on that 😭
