Model Trains Have Taken Over My House!

Using almost every piece of track I owned, I set up the largest layout I could fit in my small house... running all four of my G-scale model trains at the same time.
There were 180 degree turns in my guest room, master bedroom, dining room, and living room. I left it this way for about 24 hours, and you'd think my wife would have quickly gotten tired of having to walk between train tracks... but she was actually quite patient about it.
The main focus of the video is my favorite model train, a LGB 21576 Santa Fe diesel locomotive pulling passenger cars. This is a replica of the famous Super Chief train from the heyday of cross-country train travel.
You can also see a LGB 25554 White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad diesel locomotive pulling freight cars and a Piko 38212 AT&SF steam locomotive providing some pretty cool steam train sounds! Finally, there is also a LGB 24771 Porter Steam locomotive pulling some passenger cars... and it also doubled as the camera train for the track-level shots.
You can see from the smile on my face at 33 seconds in to the video that it's a lot of fun to play with model trains! I just wish I had a bigger place to set them up!

I did the same thing with my o gauge set. My wife went to the coast with her friends one weekend and my grandson and I got it laid out all over the house with 3 trains running! I felt for sure my wife would find it impressive when she came home. Subsquently, she ended up clearing out the garage for me to move my trainset into. It's all good now.

Amazing that it runs so well with power feeders all over the place. My 17 foot N scale layout is only 17' long and has over 2 dozen feeders!
@JimZim
@JimZim 8 жыл бұрын
+Bob Eastman The LGB track makes very good connections. I just connect power to the track at one point, and the track carries the current the whole rest of the way. No need to feed power in at multiple places.

Greetings Jim! Thanks for your comment. I have gone crazy after seeing your setup, dreaming to have a similar setup at home. Most concerning part is the pricing. If possible please share how much will it cost approximately.
@JimZim
@JimZim 8 жыл бұрын
+Muhammed Nasir What you see in the video is roughly $5000 USD worth of model train stuff. Track, switches, locomotives, rail cars, DCC control system. Pricey, because it's G-scale, which is physically large. Going to a small scale, such as O-scale or even HO-scale, would allow you to do it less expensively. But G-scale is very impressive precisely because of its large size.

Crazy Stuff! Hard to believe these trains are running inside house. Excellent setup, Jim I know you would have spent lots for this. It's driving me crazy now. How do you manage to run all trains at the same time without any collision???
@JimZim
@JimZim 8 жыл бұрын
+Muhammed Nasir There are two loops, with two trains running on each loop. The loops are fairly large, so as long as I space the two trains out fairly well on each loop, all four can run at the same time without worrying about anybody colliding. The entire system is run by DCC, which is a digital control system that allows individual control of each train. So, in other words, I can speed one train up, slow another down, toot the horn on another... all individually. This makes it easy to match the speeds up so that no one train catches up and collides with another on the same track.

Thanks for the ride Jim,I noticed a dog dish and pen,how do you manage with a dog(s)?
@JimZim
@JimZim 8 жыл бұрын
She's a really old dog... going to be 14 years old in August. So, she pretty much just sleeps most of the time. She spends most of the day in my wife's sewing room (a no-train zone) so she really isn't impacted much by the trains. The worst part is that she is deaf now, so when she does walk through the train zone, she can't hear if one is sneaking up on her... even if I blow the horn or tell her to watch out. When the trains are not running and are just sitting dead on the tracks, the dog will sometimes try to jump over them rather than walk around them... but at her age, an attempted train jump usually means a train knock-over. But there really aren't very many dog versus train incidents. A younger, more active dog would probably be a bigger problem for the trains.

This is awesome. How in the world did you get this layout figured out? Is it all fixed track or is some of it flex?
@JimZim
@JimZim 8 жыл бұрын
+Bran “BMR” Don It's all fixed track. I set up the trains for a couple of weeks and then put them away for a couple of months. So, every few months I am setting it all up again. This gives me lots of opportunities to try out new ideas for setting up the tracks. I keep trying to find ways to squeeze more track in to the available space, and to come up with more interesting layouts. Sometimes I think about how most people with model trains build a permanent layout... in a basement, a garage, or outdoors... and having one layout that never changes seems like it would get really boring to me after a while! Half of the fun for me is the challenge each time I set it up again of seeing if I can come up with an even more interesting layout than the last time.

You've made a surprising appearance in this video of the G scale model trains taking over the entire house in California. When you have eight of ten GE Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotives of eight of ten different railways, are you going to get the Alaska Railway and the Rocky Mountaineer passenger trains to complete the GE Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotives in your collection of G scale model trains? Yes or no?! Because as always, I am Thomas Comeau and I will see the replies from you.

At approximately :23 seconds into the video which locomotive or train did you use for pacing directly in front of the Super Chief?
@JimZim
@JimZim Жыл бұрын
I made this video seven years ago... so, I'm not entirely sure. But it would have had to been one of my DCC locomotives, so that I could control the speed independently... and it would have had to been one that ran fairly quietly, so as not to make any excess noise in the soundtrack. My guess is that it was probably my little LGB Porter locomotive... the one marked as #3, which you can see in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZpOSp62D2Mjcgac.html

Started it 2 years ago when this pine tree came down. Had a speed of 27 feet, so built a train set using the wood from it and what better way to cover up the dead ground around it. How do you vacuum.

What is the price of this trains
@JimZim
@JimZim 8 жыл бұрын
+Rehan Sajid Each piece is sold separately. The locomotives you see range in cost from $150 for the little black one to about $550 for the green one. The rail cars behind the locomotives cost anywhere from $50 to $400 each... depending on the car. Then there's the cost of the track, switches, controllers... it adds up fast. Total cost for everything you see in the video certainly is in excess of $5000 USD. I honestly don't keep a running total in my head of what I've spent on this hobby, because it would be a scary number to think about.
