In this episode we'll model a Phillips Head Screw. We'll use a Helix with a Wave Deformer and a Custom Soft Select.

My dude, 7 years later and you've saved my butt! lol everything is the exact same. I actually got on my own to the exact same spot as you where I added the support loops, cause it just felt natural. But then I didn't know where to go, and actually beveling the sharp edges of the actual screw made way more sense than just adding two more support loops. It really got rid of how many loops I needed to close out. I knew there was a good way but I couldn't find any good tutorials!!! Thanks a ton for this tutorial! Now I'll forever know how to attach a helix to a cylinder hahaha

Thanks for sharing this with us! At 27:31, you had the prevent negative scale thing turned on that's why can't scale down.

You are my new favorite Maya guy. Your workflow and command of the maze of Maya shortcuts and tools is amazing. Likewise your breakdown and explanation of what you are doing is second to none. I'm in school for computer animation and as long as someone knows the basic tools in Maya I would recommend your videos over many Maya "courses" just because they are practical and you show how you are able to work so fast. I'm not sure how you only have around 7k subs but I'll spread the word in my circles.

You are a f*ing maya wizard. Great work. The MEL command is SplitPolygonTool; and as you hit enter it will enter the tool and the icon on the toolbar on the left, the last tool used, is also "draggable", so one can middle mouse drag to a shelf.

and on the negative scale on components you just missed the checkbox, there's one in the scale tool settings that says "prevent negative scale" and does just that, i never noticed that btw lol.

Nice. Thank you. Coming from 20 years of Softimage, it's painful to start learning the basics again, but you certainly helped me learn many of the attributes that are common throughout the modeling tool set. Just my two cents, but maybe you loose the piano accompaniment. :) Thanks again.

at 3:38 it would have really helped to know that you go from the Append to Polygon Tool to the Move Tool and then Select the Append to Polygon Tool again... 🙄Had me going in Circles... But thanks this is the best video I've seen on creating a Screw.

+Yaniv Averbuch Thanks! I soften edges because if there is any bad geo, like edges not connected or double faces, they will not soften. So softening edges often will let you catch those issues early before you spend too much time on geo that you might not be able to fix later on (Like double faces). Also, you don't have to subdivide always when rendering, if you have any hard edges when not subdividing during render time, they will show up. Softened edges usually give decent result without having to subdivide at render time.

I'm on the 2018 version of maya, but I can't find the tool you mentioned at 3:29... does anyone know the equivalent to it in this version?

You could have used the cylinder, made it smaller, model the tip and head on the machine cylinder, and attach the helix with a boolean :) (Instead of removing the faces, appending, edge selecting, bridging and having to fix the caps) But nevertheless, I guess you learn a bit more tools and techniques this way.

Booleans in Maya require more cleanup and setup (cleaning up triangles). If you know the tools you need to use, the process becomes faster and more efficient, and in the end more accurate.

Alex Cheparev that is true in many cases, but as your center cylinder, already lineup with the surrounding topology, the only cleaning needed is a delete history. Trust me, in this case, a boolean, will get the job done, no cleaning needed.

Why you used cylinder for reference you could straight away use 16 subdivision instead and why 16 why not 12 or any other integer

If your coil number is not set to an integer, Setting 16 won't always line up. 12 Subdivision is harder to quad than 16. Subdivision of 8 and 16 are the easiest to quad because they easily split into 4, and the square root is an even number. You can try it yourself, make a cylinder with 12 subdivisions, and one with 16 and try to quad the caps.

It's mostly quads, but Pentagons subdivide really nicely into quads. In some cases quading pentagons will add extra unnecessary geo. If you plan on doing an overall subdivision during rendering, it's sometimes better to leave a bothersome pentagon for subdivision during rendering.
