This modelling request seemed like a great opportunity for a video looking at some modelling theory. Some people get far too hung up on the destructive vs non-destructive "debate" but really the answer is do what you prefer and what suits your purpose.

As someone with a background in engineering-style NURBS CAD, non-destructive is what I instinctively want to do, but I always end up hitting the point in blender where I have to do something destructive to make it work, and I usually end up sitting there for 5 minutes trying to figure out if there's some other way or if I really want what I'm about to do. Or sometimes I get so many non-destructive functions built on top of each other that the model becomes unstable. But as someone with a CAD background, using Blender I really miss being able to work back through every single operation and change something if needed.

I totally agree with everything you've said. I always try to keep non-destructive as long as I can but there will often be that point you need to go destructive.

!I am for sure doing a mix of these when I'm working in Blender - Non-destructive as far as I can take it, and then a mix of destructive and non-destructive from there. The mix is kinda a key-word, there is almost no situation where a singular solution of these two is the exact correct solution, unless it is something very simple. Great video!

Definitely. Right tool/technique for the right situation and as that changes throughout a project the best designers/modellers will change with it. 👍🏻

Sometimes you can still get the geometry to be nice and work after doing things non destructively by using dice in hard ops. Its just the booleans aren't always able to do what you need to be done in a cut based on the complexity or location for the cut. You just need to be causious where to put the dice cuts and the exta options it offers when in the opperation helps out a lot. I have my apply modifer in my hard ops fav panel so i can press "QQA" and let hardops apply them so i dont have to do it manually. I apply it as needed but also to check the geometry before moving further.

Dice is a great tool. I normally use it more if I'm going to bend an object 👍🏻

The bevel modifier can be a game changer. I wish that was more normalized. It might not help in every situation, but when it does, it’s extremely helpful

Totally agreed. If you don't have it (and you use addons) Hard Ops makes it even faster to use effectively - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gcB7p82HzdudeJc.html

Beveling is another place where the line of the edge loops produced really matters. Beveling can take a mesh that looks fine and show you where errors are that you never thought of.

Very true. Its a great check of topology/errors along with SubD

Actually it was very useful! Sometimes I make shapes and want to add some cut loops and I can't or they work weirdly... So now I will take a good look on it, if it is quad or n-gon🤔As a beginner you don't really think about it often.

Hey - why is the destructive method the one where you build the model from scratch, and the non-destructive the one where you cut bits out of the shape? In my head, cutting bits off something would be a destructive process. Just curious about the terminology

Destructive modelling is any technique which uses modifiers to change shape (in this instance Booleans) but as they are modifiers later you can go back and change them so you haven't affected a permanent change. This can be something that adds a shape as well, just in this instance I needed to subtract as you can't bevel a single edge that's been created with a boolean without first applying the boolean (at which point it has become destructive as you can't modify that change).

Additional question, does the non destructive tax the processor more and slow Things down?
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 2 ай бұрын
Yes it does a bit but it depends what you're doing. Some actions like movements of complex object really slow things down I find it isn't too bad. But then my computer isn't too bad.
