All types of bows shoot differently and serve different purposes. At the end of the day you shoot what you enjoy shooting. I have both a compound and a take-down recurve myself and while I prefer my compound, my recurve is equally as enjoyable to shoot and both feel like completely different experiences.

We are using standard shooting style of each time period. The modern compound bow reload speed is about 30 seconds limit an arrow so this is sufficient. The horse archery reload speed here is considered standard. Not too fast not too slow. Historical ones didn’t have string bridges but mine does because limitation of fiberglass bar design

I’m not too knowledgeable on bow and arrow designs, but I’ve always wondered with how fast our technology has advanced over the years if any modern bow designs have looked at the efficiency of the use of ancient bows throughout world history and tried to improve on the design from other aspects like making it easier to fire faster with modern technological advancements. A lot of the bows I’ve seen seem to have a very universal design, and that’s not bad by any means but it seems that there are more modern bow and arrow designs today that don’t get as much recognition.

Modern bows have only one use: target practice. Even hunting bows are designed to just hit a target. Medieval war bows were designed with multiple needs and roles in mind. You showcased both instances quite wonderfully, it's comparing apples to oranges.

No comparison occurred here. Bows were shot with an entirely different approach, intent and technique. If you're going to claim this is a comparison (despite contradictory comments that this is for fun) then I would suggest, at the most basic level, you should be demonstrating differences in: - distance - accuracy - potential rate of fire I'm not trying to be critical, it's just that even as a newcomer, a heavy bias is apparent.

Modern bow: You are dead. I hit you. Old Bow: You better duck because I have 20 arrows and nobody knows where in that direction they will land.

A precision instrument vs a weapon. Well illustrated given how many shots he managed in the same time. Frankly in a fight I'd argue volume of fire to be more important than accuracy but then I prefer to shoot a 140 longbow so I have very little measure in either category lol.

Precision vs. Rate of fire ? I feel like war/combat archery is like what modern soldiers learn, shoot down range and hit your target. It really isn't about "precision" it's about damage.

It would be cool to see an actual arrow race between trad and compound but while using a target for scoring purposes to keep the trad bow honest about hitting full draw…I wonder if a speedy compound shooter could out score trad shooter even allowing for the discrepancy in the number of arrows? You could try the same rules at longer and longer ranges until it changes the outcome just to see the limits of rushing on both platforms

true, they are designed for different purposes but what you are doing here isnt a versus. a versus has to be under the completely same conditions even if the bows design is another. for this to be a versus you would either have to go precision for the traditional bow or speed for the compound bow

Compound Bows are badass. As far as i'm concerned it wins if it hits the target better, and realistically it would probably get a shot first if two opponents just noticed eachothers. Regardless, i'd love to see a fictional work/game come up with a Compound Bow that can preload several arrows and mechanically hold the string kinda like a crossbow, somehow, even if unrealistic. A Repeater "Bolt Action" Compound Bow (That's just a sideways Repeater Crossbow! Well yes, kinda, but cooler, so shush), if you will, some sort of Compound Bow with an arrow quiver "mag" mounted to it with an autoreload mechanism, allowing you to only draw and fire consecutively in quick successions.

This could be explained simply. The ancient style is the machine gun, and the modern bow is the marksman rifle. Youre changing speed for accuracy and vice versa. No one is worse than the other, all depends on circumstance and uses, just like guns.

considering they wouldeve used this type of bow on horseback a good rate of fire would be necessary.

I believe in conserving ammunition and making every shot count. I use a recurve but that's why I'm conflicted with your short bow. Weather for hunting or for warfare you're going to want the ammunition you have to count in my opinion.

When I see thumb draw with short bows Compared to compound shooting with a release aid. I see more in common In technique n form than I see different. You shoot faster Your companion has more points of reference And is more accurate. Yet if you slow down your shooting . Your forms are more similar than different. There is more form difference between shooting a d bow with fingers than that Scythian short bow with thumb draw . Than the Scythian and the compound in video . Btw nice flow . I mean i have a simple compound bow you can fire with the same speed and power as that that's easier to draw because of the wonders of modern technology (assuming you care about speed and accuracy not just speed or acuracy.)

The anchient one is better because an archer would not stay in one place he would move around shooting arrow after arrow and speed is important

One thing I would like to see is how powerful a full warbow with modern materials, construction methods, technology and arrows could be. As far as I'm aware there aren't any modern compound bows that push us to our physical limits like historical warbows.

Classic Bows are so much cooler than modern compound bows

Whoever has the modern bow is extremely slow I can lose 14 arrows and under a minute and still make my targets

The compound bow might be more precise, but the asiatic horse bow was more versatile. My opinion.

Love how the modern bow guy took as slow as humanly possible. I agree it is slower than the older style of bows but it is far more accurate I believe at greater distances. It can still be fired much quicker tho.

I'm 100% recurve all day long. I don't plan to ever buy a compound. However if somehow the billionaires couldn't stop the global collapse of society, I'd be getting all the compound bows.

That level of accuracy, in the ancient bow is adequate for war. The level of accuracy from modern compound, is nice, but is not a fighting tool as is that ancient bow

If you shoot 9 times quicker but you miss, doesn’t matter how quick you are. Also that’s a stationary object. Let’s see him do it to a moving target

I'd personally rather have consistent accurate shot placement, and higher FPS of 1 shot compound vs speed of repeat draw.

To be fair modern compound bows probably aren’t made for warfare, so the fire rate isn’t really that important

1 head killshot vs a 4 or 5 quick successive kill shots to the body. Pretty realistic way of seeing it work against other archer way back when

For thousands of years, bow design of the turkics have never changed. Compare this bow to the Ottoman Turks in Istanbul. Very powerful bows, compact but very deadly. They where the super weapons at that time

Isn't one meant for accuracy, while the other is for speed? Like, you can see by the end that the modern is nearly dead center, while the ancient is more scattered. I think that it's better to use a bow that can hit more accurately as apposed to one that can shoot fast.

I mean hoss is the slowest guy ever but he drilled a couple of dimes while the old bow was more like a shotgun blast. Which is better? Well when I shoot something will a bow I want a clean and ethical kill. Unless you're talking about the zombie apocalypse. In which case the bow would not be my preferred weapon.
