We fell into the Instagram and Pinterest trap of looking at design ideas for two hours before bed every night during our design build, and once we saw the modern farmhouse look there was no going back!
At several points during our design decisions we decided to part ways with this Arctic White James Hardie siding because of cost and logistical issues. After driving hours in several directions to view other homes that used this product, we were convinced we couldn't do it any other way.
After a full year in our house, here is a walk around to talk about the factors behind our decision, and the pros and cons of this product!
More reviews of our design build coming up if you want to tune in, click here to subscribe, / @buildlessons

reminds me of the siding they used to use before vinyl siding, on old houses, that id see as a kid.. i dont know what it was called.. probably asbestos siding or something.. usually green for some reason.. the only reason im watching this vid is because james hardie was moving a company nearby, and i was seeing what they made.. my house had wood siding that was repainted over the decades, and then grandpa got vinyl siding thats still on many years later.. i never liked it much, but its held up for a long time now, and ill probably have it till i die.. i doubt id put much money into this old house.. had to reshingle the roof recently.. cant have it raining in the house.. when that stack under the toilet finally crumbles away, i may have to do something about that.. cant have my poop just falling onto the basement floor.. but other than that, im not going to put the least amount i can into this old house.. you know, all these goons building up around my house, making noise and sucking up money.. i could do without them all.. so, i figure if my house gets hit by a tornado or whatever, ill just move somewhere more peaceful.. but yeah, back to the siding.. when they first installed the vinyl siding, i thought it looked pretty cheapo, but gramps was tired of always painting it, and i cant blame him.. its held up for many decades now.. probably a lot longer than that crap you got will.. but i can understand how a person wants a certain look.. vinyl siding does look a little bleh.. and when you push on it, its all moving around.. but hey, what can you expect in the modern age of tarda progression

I would definitely say we would use it again! It produced the exact vision I had for the exterior of our home. We will see what happens when the boys are old enough to start taking slap shots - but hopefully we can point them in another direction instead of at the Hardie Board. 😂

Great video. I'm planning to build a custom home with Zip R-6 sheathing, Keene mesh type of rainscreen which I think maybe cheaper to install compared to wood furring strips, and Hardie board and batten. You're house looks amazing!

Thank you, we love the look I cant believe more people don't use it! Do you have an experienced installer to do the work? We used strapping behind ours but it is vertically oriented in all cases possible.
@tamil1001
@tamil1001 Жыл бұрын
@@BuildLessons Yes. Living in US in the state of Maryland hardie cement siding is very popular and there are many installers. The nice thing about the Keene easy fur strips for the rain screen is they can be installed vertically or horizontally. The large hardie vertical panels I believe can be fastened to the OSB and not necessarily all the way into the studs but not sure about this. Did you use any continuous(exterior) insulation on your home?
@BuildLessons
@BuildLessons Жыл бұрын
@@tamil1001 We did use continuous exterior insulation. It is a more Canadian product called BP Excel. It is an R5 product that is not as solid as the Zip system, and without as many glues so it actually breathes which is interesting. Keeping our wood strapping vertical was very difficult on some sections of the board and batten areas and around windows. We have had no water issues yet. The installer and myself were very meticulous about flashing and caulking details, but if I were to do it again I would plan to incorporate a drainable furring option like you are using! The one nice thing about wood strapping is that it does not compress - I did worry about that with mesh style furring products, that it might create a wavy finish by getting slightly compressed where the hard and trims were fastened to the sheathing.

I love the way it looks. So for a house your size how much more expensive total for the party board versus vinyl? I think that the party board would actually be a cheaper alternative for me because I'm actually thinking about Brick 🧱. But I love that updated farmhouse look that you have but I also love brick 🧱. Let me know what you think and did you consider red brick or different color brick? Curious The price difference. I will probably be building my house summer in Florida on 19 acres. Thank you I enjoyed your video 👍

It was similar to the price of break at the time, but it’s very difficult to find labour for brick installation here these days. To be honest, it’s been quite a while since I looked back at our quotes to know how much more it was then vinyl, but it is a lifetime product, and, after seeing people attempt the white looking vinyl, it is so much brighter, and just does not come off the same!
@brianlee6849
@brianlee6849 Жыл бұрын
@@BuildLessons I agree it's definitely worth the money and looks way better than vinyl. I think a combination of vertical siding and brick or stone is the way to go. I think red brick 🧱 and white board and batten would be a great look and eye catcher. Thank you

Had white for 17 years and yeah it can look pretty grungy after the winter and green on the shaded side. My husband bought a pressure washer and cleaned it every spring and I would go behind him, touch up places with a little paint. If you are good at doing a little maintenance every spring it's not too difficult to keep it looking good.

@BuildLessons
@BuildLessons 3 жыл бұрын
We did briefly, have you ever used it?
@ceedub7374
@ceedub7374 3 жыл бұрын
Yes , I DIY resided my 34 year old midwest house with it. On the bottom ground row I used a textured PVC 1 X 8 with one routed beveled edge that the LP lap siding went on top of. It looked very similar to the LP siding texture and should help moisture/snow from causing an issue with any swelling on the LP, which was the main complaint I heard. It was easy to work with. My neighbor had James Hardi put on by professionals(the weight and cutting dust I couldnt deal with).All my cuts were painted with matching color as I installed. My previous siding was 8"beveled cedar and that had warpped and cracked quite a bit on the south and west sides of the house. So far (3 yrs ) the LP is looking good.
