Pro tip for you. Keep a tube of cherry chapstick, cheap red lipstick, even a crayon in the toolbox. When you're installing the latch flange, rub a dab on the latch and close the door. It will transfer the lipstick to the jamb, showing you exactly where the latch hits

PRO TIP! When placing striker plates, place a piece of aluminum tape over the hole, then hold the bolt open, close the door and release the bolt with just enough to leave a indent on the tape. You now know exactly where to put your plate. 8:39

My Wife wanted a rain chain on the front of our home. Although I wasn't keen on it, I much prefer being married! So, like the good man I am to my Wife, I agreed. It's turned out to be a very good install on our home and, when it's raining, it is a very nice item to sit and enjoy on the front porch. Another good ideas feom my Bride!

Case in point about the doors. My in-laws have an amazingly huge hardwood front door that in the winter didn't latch good because the installers did not take the time to adjust the plate. There's 2 ways of doing things: the right way and again. Door lock devices on top of door trim is essential for kids.

Ramelle, love the rain chain. A suggestion for the box at the bottom would be to put moss or other plants that love water or being damp. The would thrive there and help stop any erosion. Yay for a good sink also.

Thanks. I installed rocks on top of the grate for now. I’ll get the landscaping. Right now I am still trying to get the interior situated. It’s going to be awhile longer in that! And do glad I found an in stock sink that I liked and even though it was the next grade down in stainless steel it had a better rim!

When I installed a rain chain here I landscaped the area with river pebbles/river rock that were between 1" and 2" in diameter about 4 feet out from the bottom drain catch on each side. Then placed some larger rocks scattered about on the pebbles to make a rock garden area so that any splashing during heavier rains keeps the soil or mulch from washing away.

A nice way I was thought by an experienced carpenter in relation to finding the exact location for the latch plate on the door frame was to rub the lead of your pencil up and down on the latch then close the door and just pull the handle down and let it spring back up open the door and the lead should leave a mark exactly where the latch will close into the latch plate. Works everytime and saves so much time.

Wow! That Rain chain is beautiful! For some reason i thought it would sound similar to a wind chime, with water contacting metal, sort of like a water chime, but it sounds way better! I cant imagine how wonderful it would feel to sit on that deck on a rainy day, a nice cup of hot cocoa, and the sound of rainwater on copper!! Precision and attention to detail is always a quality displayed by the Perkins crew!! Beautifully done!

Rain Chain: I hope it only rains on calm days. Spreads some gravel or something around the grate to catch the water that misses the grate, otherwise erosion? Massive ice cycles in winter? Strong enough to bare the weight?

To make your life easy they make lock installation tools. Part of the kit is rectangle striking blocks with blades on all 4 edges to get the outline of the strikeplates and bolts that need to be mortised. The other part looks like a small pointy plumb bob. After the crossbore and latch/bolt holes are drilled for the lockset you insert the plumb bob thingie into the latch/bolt hole. It has a point on it. Hold the door closed and give a slight tap and it perfectly marks the center of the frame for a perfect alignment. The other tip is if you don't have that tool install the deadolt or latch and put some lipstick on it. Work it in and out a couple of times. It will mark the frame where to drill. It also works to adjust or grind a strikeplate where the bolt/latch is hitting. I'm an automotive locksmith but every once in a while I have to do someone a favor so I have these tools and always have the lipstick for adjustments.

Definitely going to order a couple of those cameras to keep an eye on jobsites! Getting those doors right is always a pain, I've seen a bunch of guys just slap everything together and take no time to make sure it's right. I think the rain chain would have been better if it was one like Arlo was talking about, just the chain, the cups are making it way to splashy.

With that close of a fit on the latch plate the door is going to sag/wear-in and it will stop latching in the near future. I'd suggest filing that down for more clearance so you don't have a call-back.

9:45 hilti dx460 is a boss when you need a PAN. Although that said, the charge type is a big determinant in noise. My guess is they would be using yellow caps with the power adjustment rolled right out to hang that VB sheeting or it would just punch right through. If you use reds or blacks and have the power dialed in, it sounds more like a .22lr pistol than a stapler.

@PerkinsBuilderBrothers. When the door plate needs to be moved up or down, to prevent from hitting the old screw hole, take the plate off, use a golf tee, put in the old screw hole, tap in and cut off flush. That will give you more surface to screw to so you're not getting "pulled" into the old hole.

it seems so crazy to me that they would install the door stop before the ironmongery, you will always have rock on a door doing it this way. you can also space the doorstop off of the door to allow for paint but as these aren't painted i would deffo install after latch and receiver. also you don't touch the receiver until the latch is in, that way you haven't got to mess around with filing the receiver as you've installed it to match the latch. I'm guessing these door frames came pre routed aswell? which seems strange especially as it never looked like a neat job around the receiver. i don't usually comment on videos but i am always so blown away at how backwards american builders build. Half of the stuff you guys do wouldn't fly here as it would take way too long and your hot tips are usually things 1st year apprentice's figure out immediately. Despite everything i still can't stop watching, keep it up.

7:08 I always temp the catch up with painters tape to make sure it is exactly where I need it. Then you can drill and screw knowing you got it right.

Pro tip on the strike plates on the doors. If you need to move them for any reason. Splinter a bit off a shim and tap it in the screw holes until they bottom out break them off, and you can move the plate where you need to put it. Use to install doors and we bad to do that sometimes.

Doesn’t work when you have already routed out the area for the plate to sit flush. It’s much easier and looks better to just file the plate down.
