15 years ago, Jade Chen left New York City to settle on a remote lava field far from any store or utility. She bought 1/6 of an acre on top of a neighborhood that had been buried in the 1990 eruption.
Jade was one of the first to return to the area but slowly others joined, and now despite being far from the grid, there are dozens of homes here, capturing the sun and rain. Her property came with an unfinished home and she has slowly turned it into 3 units which she uses for nightly rentals and yoga classes.
Some of Jade's renters have gone on to buy properties and are now her neighbors (she now manages 10 homes in the area).
Some of her Jade's tenants have bought their own lots and built their own floating homes. Treehouse builder Will Beilharz lofted his Phoenix and Ohana houses several feet above the lava so in the event of another eruption, they can be scooped up and carried off on tractor-trailers.
Our family spent the night in the Phoenix house, and its adjacent escape pod, which are equipped with a tin wash-basin sink, a camp stove, and showers that drain right onto the lava. Outside, a 5000-gallon tank holds rainwater captured from the roofs.
With the sparse vegetation and no power lines in site, the views across the lava feel endless. It’s a landscape that Jade explains is not understood by everyone, but for her, it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Big Island is by far my favorite, so many different biomes. You have these lava fields, then hilo is tropical, up north is rolling grasslands, south feels like Arizona. Then there are still water falls, lava tubes you can explore and nicely sized towns to explore.

When we were married in 1993 we spent our honeymoon on the Big Island. Loved every minute of being there and I vividly remember walking through this area, at the time only 2 years after the 1991 flow. None of the homes we see in this video were there in 1993. It was just a vast, still steaming lava field and the only structure I saw the whole afternoon was a single porta potty baking away in the 100+ degree heat. 30 years later it's so different!

Hey Kirsten and Family, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! Wow, I would be totally into living there. A perfect off grid place where you can develop it however you want to, and, unlike everywhere else in North America right now, the property is cheap as anything, UNBELIEVABLE. And if the only risk is that it could be taken by lava flow if there's an eruption, well, that forces you to live with as little as you need and always being ready to evacuate elsewhere. Crazy, but it sounds like the perfect kind of place for me.

00:28 🌋 Living atop an active volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, Jade Chen showcases her unique off-grid compound made from recycled materials. 02:36 🏞 The volcanic landscape is described as resembling another planet, with the house situated on a shield volcano-one of the most active in the world. 03:23 🏠 The Phoenix House is elevated to facilitate quick relocation in case of lava flow, emphasizing utilitarian design and off-grid functionality. 04:06 💧 Sustainability is a focus, utilizing recycled goods, solar panels, a 5,000-gallon catchment tank, and a rainwater-filtering shower system. 05:31 🌍 Living amidst volcanic uncertainty, Jade reflects on the impermanence of life, emphasizing the importance of adapting and creating in the face of uncertainties. 06:43 🪟 Every part of the house, including windows, is custom-made, contributing to the sense of being in harmony with the elements. 08:25 🔄 Regular maintenance is crucial, illustrated by checking water levels, repairing broken pipes, and having backup systems, showcasing the challenges of off-grid living. 10:20 🌳 The compound includes a caretaker pod, an open space for contemplation, and a garden featuring agriculture and an outdoor shower. 13:29 ☀ Off-grid living, including a $330,000 solar system, offers a unique lifestyle but comes with challenges, making it more about personal choice than affordability. 15:13 🌌 The interior of Jade's compound is a combination of living space and temple, reflecting her connection to the Hawaiian goddess Pele and the transformative power of the volcano. 17:39 🏡 Gardening on the lava field involves using trucked soil, mulch, and porous lava, showcasing the creativity needed to cultivate life on volcanic terrain. 19:32 🏡 The Ohana House, built for families, incorporates design elements allowing relocation in the face of lava flows, emphasizing safety and adaptability. 20:57 🚿 The Ohana House features custom-made furniture, a functional kitchen, and a simple bathroom design, embodying a mix of unexpected materials and functional aesthetics. 22:05 ⚡ The off-grid compound relies on two batteries powered by a solar system and a generator for backup during low sunshine. 22:48 🚧 Community members collaborate to maintain and repair roads, emphasizing the absence of government services in the area. 23:23 📬 Without government services, there are no official addresses, and residents rely on GPS coordinates. The lava landscape is described as changing and potentially becoming soil in a few decades. 23:49 🏥 Access to essential services like hospitals is challenging, highlighting the isolated nature of living on an active volcano.

Dig a hole, run the pipe and voila!!! It’s called a cesspool. Lava is so porous and very good and filtering waste that it’s ok to just bury any waste product. Most older homes here have a cesspool. But new laws(stupid laws) require septic systems. Huge tanks in the ground that require maintenance. Pumping of the solid wastes when it fills up. That’s the government finding ways to get home owners to pay. Cesspools are fine. The water tables are so far down that it’s not an issue for any hazards to reach it. Like I said before, the lava rock acts as a huge filter.

On the one hand the selling price of land atop a lava field is cheap. You might have a home there a long time. On the other hand you might lose it very soon and then it was an expensive piece of property. Personally, there are places to build devoid of hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, forest fires, earthquakes and especially volcanoes. But they do come with rivers, lakes, forests that rarely burn, mountains, stunning sunsets, starry skies, serenity , no traffic, affordable land, and no personal income taxes. I'll pick those. 😊

Hello fellow 0bsever 😁 Something to consider is why is Zuckerberg making his bunker in Hawaii? I'm not saying the poles and Adam and Eve event WILL 100% happen, but we can be for certain that solar flares events WILL happen. The fact that there's the consideration for the southern hemisphere tells me that Zuckerberg knows the solar event is gonna hit the Northern hemisphere? That's not a given either, but it does tie in with Oprah Winfrey and her purchase of land down that way also? I think that we are going to see a September event either 24 or 25 that's going to fk everything up in a big way
@jameshatton4405
@jameshatton4405 3 ай бұрын
If Adam and Eve story is 100% fact. Then unfortunately nowhere on the planet is safe. But let's say that for 3 days the sun is scorching on North American (with no night time period to allow cooling in-between those 3 days and 3 nights (nights without darkness) then I don't think anywhere in North America is safe not even deep underground? I know Ben mentioned up to 2km high waves potentially? But that's scary enough to say nowhere on the planet is safe? I find that difficult to believe as we have signs of previous civilisations? It would be assumed that every cataclysmic event has spared some people? So where did those people go? I'm not saying this is true or false but the fact that we have aboriginal people in Australia and we have native Indians in America it's a sign that the previous event wasn't completely devastating? Was the Carrington event the last in recorded history? It coincides with the dramatic shift and changes in human history books at around the same time? My thought is that what if the ocean explorers that set out to find new lands....... Weren't setting out to find new lands at all? Maybe they were setting out to obtain lost technologies left behind by the previous civilisations? Hence the popular more recent Tartaria hypothesis? I think they could be linked. Too many things that don't make sense in Australian history for me to believe that Captain Cook was the first European settlers that brought convicts? They brought a hell of a lot of convicts with stone masonry skills if they did! Hahaha what are stone masons doing being criminals then? If they are such highly skilled people, what went wrong in civilisation for these highly highly skilled masons to end up as crooks and criminals to be sent to Australia as convicts. It was claimed that only the worst of them were sent due to the Voyager being so dangerous that they weren't prepared to risk sending the best of them on the first voyage? Nothing makes sense. The Star Forts on every continent. The placement of those forts make no sense other than some huge huge world wide military fighting something from the ocean? Hmmmm USOs? I am a bit autistic as fk so you will have to take my theories with a grain of salt. I've got no arguments or proof just theories?

Most of the older homes in Hawaii have them. But here they don’t have much rules and regulations because it’s so off grid so septic systems aren’t required.

SADLY: She did not mention the theft and burglary rampant in those areas, drug abusers, or the outrageous cost of food, it requires a special person to endure and "watch over" ones property there...

We didn’t see anything of the hellscape you’re describing. Point at some source with actual data or otherwise I’ll believe my eyes, because I was in the area several days and looked pretty calm and safe to me.

@@nicolasboullosa Glad you did not... I nearly invested in one of those lava areas years ago.... There are many KZfaqs explaining the "quality of life" challenges (Bad Crime, homelessness, etc...) in those areas... What I sadly took away is if you are not on your premises constantly (!) or have designated neighbors on guard your are in for some brutal reality... Many stories of people finding their entire homes "stripped" down to the foundations.... Horrific... Even stealing those massive water catchment things... Hopefully that may change with technology and less pro-criminal laws someday ⁉

@@nicolasboullosa BTW Did you visit a "grocery store" there while visiting ? Did you see the prices and the "quality" of the food ?? Believe me Nicolas I nearly invested in that "dream...." I hope your viewers are not accidentally misled... Respectfully; When you investigate the "facts" of the total package it is far more complicated than your wonderful video portrays it. 😉 Signed, long-term loyal viewer 💪

@@LJ-jq8og I don't think "convenience" is on the top of the list for people who try to make it work somewhere like the Big Island. Though I'm sure there are parts of cities on the "mainland" where food is way, way less convenient and unhealthy than in the Big Island. If you check rates of violence, obesity and other markers in Hawaii you'll be surprised: it's among the healthiest places in the USA for a reason.

@@nicolasboullosa FYI Food in HI is more expensive than anywhere in mainland USA. That is a well documented fact due to simple geography and logistics.

I wonder how she ever got insurance for her house, because nothing in Kalapana Gardens is permitted. County won't issue permits because of the imminent danger of lava.

I was pretty surprised actually, it’s really pleasant (this was early winter). It was really rainy some days and weather seems to change very quickly, I felt almost all climates on earth on that single island, most of them really pleasant. Altitude and proximity to the shore are huge factors.

My question is WHY? Wonder what the people who lost their homes to the lava flow would tell you.... All 120 homes that are buried under your homes. Animals bodies, lives, hopes, buried under you. I caught a glimpse of your freezer, it was empty? Gee, looks like so much fun....😟 I felt sorry for the kid running on the lava...hope they don't come across any large cracks in the lava.... bizarre.🥺
