Done a lot of 2x4 and 2x8 digging lately. About 1 in 12 of them were decent enough to use for work benches.

Use 2x8s instead and rip them to width. You'll have better quality wood to select from (in most cases)

@@saxplayingcompnerd uhm... It's actually cheaper to buy a 2x8 to cut into two 2x4s than it is to just buy two 2x4s. Also he never mentioned it even being a cheaper option. He is stating that the boards are more likely to be of better quality (straighter, less knots...) because they use better quality parts of the trees to make the wider boards. Which to most would even be worth being slightly more expensive. You'll have way less waste from trying to mill the boards flat and you won't spend nearly as much time milling either. A little research would do you some good.

@@artvandelay7537 Make sure you're comparing the same grade of lumber. HD here is $17 for a 2x8x8 and $10 for a 2x4x8 for Douglas fir

I love my vintage Herman miller chairs. Its getting really hard to do but I loved going into old offices and finding gems. I'm actually trying my first new chair from them, the embody is on its way.

im in the UK and the cheapest timber you can buy here really are 13ft scaffold boards. after they have been milled they look surprisingly good

Even marine varnish doesn't last forever. No matter the wood or the finish, you're going to be touching it up once a year. Unnecessary pixelation ftw here. 😁 Great design that looks good and uses uncomplicated joinery. Thanks for sharing!

For those worried about using 2by's for an outdoor bench/table or whatever and worried that it won't last, I made an outdoor workbench 7 or 8 years ago and it's still in great shape. Mine has regular 2x4's for the top and I used 4x4 fence posts for the legs. I use this table to do sanding, painting, grinding and cutting metal. When I made it I primed and painted but I think this year I'll do a quick sand of just the top and another coat or two of paint to clean it up. I love sanding on it because all that dust stays out of my shop.

You can use your fence with the miter gauge on non thru cuts. Especially datto cuts

At 9:10 or so, you mention using a spacer with the fence when cross-cutting with a miter gauge. That’s only needed when there is to be an off cut that can get trapped between the blade and the fence. Not needed when making a dado. Love you stuff. 9:16

The wood can still get twisted and caught in the blade which would cause it to get thrown back. Better safe than sorry.

Try Tamarack you're not likely to find it at the lumber yards or box stores but the Amish seem to have it, very rot and decay resistant also affordable.

I've been planning to build a new simple desk for my office with butcher block top but butcher block tops are too expensive. I've been thinking about making my own from 2x6 raw material. I don't have jointer or planer or bandsaw, I'm thinking I can cut the boards to 2' and 4' lengths to get rid of the worst of the warps, rip them down the center and then rip off the 2 edges. Then glue them together and belt sand the top.

Mighty EXPENSIVE. 2X4s here in central TEXAS cost $16 for an 18ft 2x4. B4 COVID they cost $2.19. Like the idea and it looks great.

Looks really nice, though I'd be _really_ surprised if it holds up for very long. Everything that I've made from pine lumber severely warps or breaks after some exposure to the elements.

Thanks for the video. I wasn’t interested in that bench but I figured I would give it a watch to see how you did it. The end result was impressive. I now would like to make something similar or even make one of these to sell. But I don’t have a dado, daddio or how ever you pronounce it lol. And I really don’t want to buy one. I only have one table saw and from what I’ve seen, the set up on a dado stack is a pain. What do you think of those jigs they make for this? I’m with you, they scare me. I have no issues working on my router table but that palm router is a bit scary. I’m wondering if you can use one of those jugs on the router table. I haven’t looked into it as you can see. Again, thanks for the video.

That bench will last for many, many years. You'll get bored before it goes bad. I made benches for our backyard once out of stock pine and gave them one coat of deck stain. I had good intentions of recoating in subsequent years but never got around it it. Those benches lasted 15 years! (That's Toledo climate, BTW)

VERY familiar with Herman Miller chairs. Their Aaron chair is likely their magnum opus...it's in almost ALL the sci-fi shows and movies AND they look amazing. I prefer Steelcase as a brand for comfort but nothing LOOKS like a Herman Miller.

You don't need to worry about using your fence and miter gauge together here because there is no off cut, you don't cut all the way through the wood, so it's usually not a problem AFAIK

You are correct, but there is still the off chance the end of the board will get hung up on the fence and bind the blade (possibly exploding the work piece up into your face). The spacer just eliminates that chance altogether.

I’d still do it David’s way, because those pieces were long. Shorter pieces, definitely you can run along the fence.

Yeah, you just wanna avoid any scenario where you can bind the work piece against the fence. If the piece twists, you can get the back of the blade kicking up/back and that's obviously super dangerous. A quick spacer like he used here is the right move... if you have a 3-2-1 block, you know it is just 1 inch and you can still use the rule on your table saw to set the fence by subtracting an inch.

Why did you use 2x4's in lieu of 1x material?? My local big box store has select pine that would not have had to be milled down to the dimensiones you used.......

Forgive me if you've mentioned this in another video, but where else would you get wood besides a home center? I know they're not always straight, but I can't think of anywhere else near me where I could buy wood besides a home center.
