This school bus to tiny house renovation has been the most rewarding project I've done to date and it feels awesome to have momentum on my side during this project. In this video I show you every step of the process for how to build a functional, versatile bedroom for your school bus to RV / Tiny house conversion. Storage is so important when it comes to tiny living and I've crammed as much utility out of the platform bed I wanted to do as possible. If you want to take on a school bus conversion follow along and I'll show you all my success and failures on Modern Builds! :)

You’ll need to make some holes under your mattress to let it breathe. In skoolies and van builds they can get moldy. A lot of builders forget to do that and then it ends up in a “I wish knew before I built...”/“What I would change...”/“One thing I hate video...” video after everything is done.

Sorry Mike, love your work but on builds like this, you need to utilise every inch of space for hidden storage and all that space underneath hasn’t been used. Maybe should have made the whole frame on a heavy duty lift up hinge with some storage bins underneath etc.

There's a lot of waste space under the bed. I know there's access panels along the side, but it's not easy to get to under the bed. You should have put gas struts and make the bed tilt up for access in the middle.

I someone agree. Not sure how I would have done it. Perhaps a Murphy bed style in the middle and when you flip it up, you have two couches on the sides with a coffee table in the middle w/storage. You could have storage under the seat cushions of the two couches. That’s just the first idea. I know things are tough when you diy so I’m not going to down what my boy did. He no doubt is talented and excited about this cool look. Well done man!

Under the bed, since you can't have one long drawer, you could have a segmented drawer. Like a series of smaller boxes on wheels, with a long chord or two attached to the back one. As you pull the chord, you can lift and set aside one segment at a time. What do you think?

When installing floor joists, always make sure the "crown" is up. Few boards are perfectly straight, so put the arch on top like a bridge beam. Not only is it stronger but if you have one up next to a board with the crown down your floor will be wavy.

Just a little advice, from someone with a bit of experience in the electrical space, there's a reason outlet extension boxes, that solve your exact problem, are plastic and not metal. Generally, you don't want your user facing outlet trim to be conductive. You should at least run a ground wire around a stud on the back of it.

An idea I’ve been knocking around in my head for a while is to use some “drawers” to take advantage of the awkward under bed area. My thought was to make boxes that will fit that have wheels or a rail but can be taken right out, then link them with a hook, so you can push them right back into the space and get them out again. Did any of that make sense?

You'd probably have to disconnect each box as they are pulled out, because he doesn't have the room to pull it straight out at once. That's because the bathroom is in the way. But I'm sure there is a creative solution to fix that and not waste all the space underneath.

Right?! The paint job alone is sooooo bad. The paint on the floor is going to wear out before he even finishes the job. No clear coats? No second coats even? Who is he making this for? And how much is he profiting off of them for this rush job?
@danhymer
@danhymer 3 жыл бұрын
@Ashlyn Quinton The second coat should have gone on before moving to another piece of the build. The adhesion of the coats makes the bond stronger. What this is is someone pumping out content to fit into a category of KZfaq streamers that he thinks are making easy money with views and I will NOT finish watching something like this. Doesn't deserve for me to be one of his statistics.

What if you put a L shape drawer that "embraces" the bathroom wall so you get the loads of space underneath the bed platform you wanted? Also, those side bed planks, they could receive brackets or pistons to make it more comfortable to open and close them, the orientation they'd open is up to you to see what feels better and is more efficient. I'm loving it the project! Can't wait for the next episode!

Really nice looking build so far; I converted a single decker Dennis Dart bus here in the UK which I have lived in ever since. One comment would be your magnetic end closure panel should tuck under the bedroom floor, not finish flush. If you step on it you will find it pulls away and you could have a nasty fall. Really looking forward to episode 3.

Love the bus build. For the strongtie connectors it really is best to use their 1 1/2" screws. Outlet extenders are cool but with that kind of stuff it's probably best to use something designed and teated/certified for the purpose just in case something happens. Great work!

I happily stumbled upon these videos. I have been watching others where there pull up the floor (shuttle bus) and do some welding of extra metal underneath. I have no skills to do that. To see what you did is a relief (episode 1)… I would need to add a ?subfloor? so as to insulate (MN). Then, this episode showed me that not only can I have stairs to the bed, but two sets of stairs! I will be traveling with 7 to 9 dogs so stairs to the bed is a must! Thank you for clarifying screw types along the way!

For the storage under the bed you could use those plastic storage bins and 'rope' them together so that you just push them in, but pull the rope to get the farthest ones out. I hope that makes sense.

Just started watching your videos. I really like what I'm seeing. One tip I wanted to say though. When you apply the caulking, you are going to want to prime/seal any raw wood. It absolutely will fail. Whether in a week or a couple years, it will fail. And primer over your wood surfaces will make sure the paint you use bites. Otherwise you run a real risk of the paint peeling off. Keep it up!

Mythix2 , I don’t see it as impractical. I think it is genius!! The space below the bed deck is perfect for storage of items not used daily. @agentmaryland1239
@agentmaryland1239 4 жыл бұрын
Only if you don't wire it correctly. Lots of public places have metal covers so it can't be that unsafe. The only issue you might run into is getting shocked if a wire somehow gets detached. Least that's what my step dad said when I asked him about things like that.

Previously commented about insulation on ep1. As a trucker they make this thin sticky insulation designed for trucks I highly recommend it around the engine compartment or some stonewool. The engine heats that area alot and a barrier there will help reduce the chances of exhaust leaking into where you sleep or live.

Tip for the future when applying silicone - get yourself a bucket of water with some dishwashing liquid/soap and spray your "sausages" before pulling off the excess silicone. It will be a lot less messy and won't stick to literally everything.

Shaping up. Also an idea for those doing a build out. Instead of sanding/painting inside the bus, once you've cut your wood go ahead and pre-sand/paint on a saw horse etc. Then once everything is in place, you're pretty much just spot checking. He's young though, but our knees would be cashed.

With the Mattress. It would have likely been better to create an insert for the mattress, bringing the mattress section lower than the entire frame of the bed. That way then the Mattress doesn't move around, making it more secure to prevent the mattress from covering the storage sections. I don't know much about all of this, so this is all solely my opinion on the matter. However, great episode. :)
