Can we as a society just move past the need to have cheating and love triangles, in a show. Or if there is cheating, can we stop trying to redeemed the cheaters and not brush off cheating as a small mistake. That trope needs to go

well she's kind of punished on the show for cheating on her friend so It doesn't pass as a good thing, they just show it with humour (she's punished at work and she can't be with grabriel and she lost a friend)! And you kind of need a complicated relationship storyline to make it interesting, though I do agree it's a type of storyline that we see a lot and it wouldn't be bad to see something else once in a while (Mindy's love story is actually cute and with a little bit of drama)

I totally agree and I really am satisfied that everything is about couple tropes because in real life you are dating and a lot of my friends are in polyamory friend with benefits stories and they don’t cheat, because they are allowed to have fun. When I have watched the second season my idea was that this awful love triangle thing would end in a poly relationship, I won’t spoiler but I can’t understand the end and the cliffhanger of Emily ….. she has moved on, has given all the signals and then she is sad? Why?
@mildredvadernikov8727

@@Start.a.curvolution I don't think they will make it a couple tropes because it's about a cliché "passionate" love story in Paris. And seeing Camille reaction to the situation I don't think she can handle adding Emily in her relationship with Grabriel. And even if Emily had moved on she was for sure going to fall back into her Grabriel cycle because it goes with the purpose of the complicated love in paris storyline they are writting since the beginning of the show. It'S the type of story that will end with the classic "And they lived happily ever after"

It’s a pity that you mentioned stereotypes about Asian and French culture, but ignored stereotypical representation of Slavic culture. There was an episode when Emily meets a girl from Ukraine. This show still baffles me with how Emily doesn't experience ANY consequences to her actions. Camille's dad had a serious injury, and everyone just laughs it off like another day on the job...Emily and Petra shoplift expensive clothes and we never see the ramifications of it. It also felt weird to have Petra appear for a whole 10 minutes the entire season just to show her as a shoplifter...what? Emily had an opportunity there to make a new friend, learn about a new culture, but nope - Petra was just a blip in the script to tide us over until Emily talked to the British guy. So disappointing!

It felt like a stereotype or a bash against Eastern European people and culture… I feel like Eastern Europeans are always portrayed as wanting expensive things and that they would do anything to obtain them. The text in Cyrillic was also ridiculous, most people in Europe know even a few phrases of English or can use google translate. It’s so cheap of the show to do that. I can’t imagine that she wouldn’t at least text her in translated French or English.

One of thing wich REALLY annoyed me in season 2 is a character named Petra from Kyiv (Ukraine), who Emily met on her French classes. Netflix shows her as an uncivilized, shoplifter whose biggest fear is to came back to Ukraine. As an Ukranian i can say that it was really rude to show my nation in that way. It represents false image of Ukrainians. And what's triggered me the most, that nobody even noticed it (except some of Ukranians watchers). Ukranians always showed like that in American"s movies and we're tired of false image of us. Thanks for the video it was good, but could you please talk about problems like this in your videos too.

What's the deal with producers visible disdain and general dislike toward eastern european woman? in the first season, the only woman from that region was shown as a gold digger/ hardcore materialist. I belive she was Serbian? and she was acting in the nude perfume commercial. You might think it was a coincidence and not stereotyping eastern european woman but this season were introduced to a Ukrainian character - one of emily classmates. at first I thought that it's their chance of fixing their mistake from the season 1, but no. Her only characteristic is not speaking French and being a thief/ shoplifter, again writing into those stereotypes. Her entire plotline has absolutely no impact on the main storyline, except for haveing Emily and Alfie meet like a day later, which changes absolutly nothing. they could have just have Emily sit with him at the begining and spare us this distasteful scharade.at this point it's hard to believe that it's just coincidental and not the producers/ writers ill intent.

Speaking as someone whose family is Chinese immigrants who did have to struggle and work long hours in a restaurant, I think it's kind of a sad stereotype second only to the Chinese doctor or tech genius, neither of which box they have shoved Mindy in. Even when she worked in a drag bar, her costume was still glamorous and her singing was still well received and opened doors for her. I prefer her being a breezy singer. Emily in Paris is basically girly pop escapism candy. I really don't want to watch a bunch of glamorous white people getting to succeed in their careers and then see the token Asian character be the lowly struggling immigrant poverty porn. Especially not right now during covid when I'm constantly seeing Chinese people being called dirty and uncivilized on social media. I like the image of a Chinese girl who is worldly and multilingual and open minded and cool and finding a way to be artistic and make it work while breaking away from her rich traditional family.

Like sure they both had their own faults but in a way i can't be so harsh on them when Gabriel is one manipulative cheater. I don't really like how this show just didn't punish him, it's classic women hating each other for the situation man created in the first place. Should Emily know better? Yes. Should Emily tell Camille she slept with Gabriel? Yes. But this manchild flirted with her, gave her gifts and clearly was trying to get into her bed way before she caught him being in relationship. I can excuse young woman acting stupid after falling in love and being involved in relationship drama but i can't excuse man of any age actively trying to get with another woman while in relationship.

Not that I was expecting mold breaking cinema from this trope filled montage of a series. Also I think it’s debatable whether Antoine is in an open relationship or not. Sometimes these things are started one sided with one partner more or less directed into leaving the barn door open and just not paying attention to what wanders in from time to time. From his wife’s words it sounds like it is a grudgingly accepted term of their marriage, Sylvie or not. If you recall Emily was almost tempted onto his roster. I also think it’s debatable whether Sylvie is really judging her at all. If anything her ribbing comes off more like she’s making fun of her, which she’s done to Emily on everything from her lack of French, her “Americanness” or her flashy clothes.” But you are welcome to your opinions. @@squeezie_b8895 if you want to clutch your pearls and apply your American ideals to French culture then you’re definitely watching the right show. You can be doe-eyed Emily and tisk away as she did when Antoine tried to casually proposition her. To you, these things are appalling because that is your experience, your norms at work. The fact that you interrupt my explaining Sylvie’s intentions as an excuse for all cheating and dishonesty is very telling of this. I actually don’t believe in excusing either, but I also know better than to take my American suburban dynamics and apply them to another culture with lots of subtext on this subject. Having lived briefly in France and having lots of close French friends I can tell you the vibe on affairs is not as severe or as judgmental as we handle them in America. Basically, and this does vary by couple, if you’re not vagrantly flaunting your side piece to everyone you know and shouting it from the rooftops, everyone kind of just pretends you’re not doing anything. That is unless your disrespect your spouse publicly, which I never quite understood where those lines in the sand are. Like it was fine for two coworkers to quietly slip away into the night but it wasn’t ok for him to host his mistress’ birthday party in his wife’s favorite bar. Honestly it was a lot like splitting hairs. But for sure they didn’t need pamphlets, a licensed therapists and ten hours of discussion before he did what he did and her in turn. And that was seemingly understood or accepted by everyone in our circle. No one was thrilled about it but it wasn’t this mountain of a thing. You know what, after watching the entirety of both seasons I have always been fascinated how willing Gabriel when it comes to hooking up with Emily. It’s even more confounding when in s2, Camille told Emily their love story and etc that she can’t commit to sleep with anyone else because she is still in love with Gabriel makes it their bond is so obviously strong to begin with. Then comes this insufferable woman with ill-looking outfits who can’t seem to do anything right and constantly needs help with her job living upstairs Gabriel's apartment then he relentlessly falls in love with her? With already established romance for 5 years with Camille? Like, what does Emily bring to the table when Camille is might i say, even better than Em. She has a good job, friendly, vivacious, good-humoured, rich, beautiful and constantly supportive of him in the restaurant business. Not to mention her family in the chateau always gives hospitality to Gabriel when they were dating even after they know he cheated. Like, i dont understand how someone is such stable environment could commit to cheating when he’s not gaining much in return. It just takes a kiss for Gabriel to completely forget about 5-years worth relationship with this person? Maybe there’s something underneath their relationship that Gabriel just doesn’t enjoy that he’d do sth like that? Could be explored in the next season.Just my opinion.

Gabriel strikes me as one of those men who will happily sit in relationships and settle for what they can get until something better comes along. I also think maybe Camille’s ‘perfect’ nature makes Gabriel himself feel inferior and insecure- for example that whole thing about the money, and it’s likely he needs someone (like Emily) who is more accident prone and also something different (being American and everything). Either way, it says a lot about his character

I personally was extremely disappointed in the portrayal of a girl from Ukraine, Petra. I come from Ukraine myself and seeing the show writers making yet again a stereotype, a horrible cliche out of us was truly devastating. The thing is that such portrayal is not new, it’s literally as old as time (or as old as American propaganda about Eastern Europe). And it’s not only painful to watch, but is harmful and damaging. The saddest part for me was the missed opportunity to show an actual immigrant and her struggles as a young Ukrainian woman alone in Paris, like Modern Gurlz mentioned in the video in the part about Mindy. Nowadays, there are thousands of Ukrainians, who live all over EU as immigrants, and their stories are fascinating. They could have created such a unique, interesting and brave character, who is trying her best to succeed in the foreign country, but made a complete joke out of her- lying, stealing dummy, who is afraid of deportation and that’s her only personality trait.

I really like the show. The characters seem more natural and fleshed out than in the first season, and as you said, it really seems like the show directors took the criticism to heart. I feel like the fashion is distinctly Emily in Paris, in the sense that its meant to be bold and an eyesore, and by now it’s just the aesthetic of the show and I actually find it distinctive. With regards to the culture stuff, the sense of ignorance to French culture seems more nuanced and actually directed from Emily’s perspective and not just the show creating it itself. I did have a little thing to critique though - Petra. Even though she was a minor character, she caused a lot of anger from Central/Eastern European audiences, as she portrays the stereotypical Eastern European villain/thief, which is an overused trope in Western media. All in all, I binge-watched it in a day.

I think most Americans didn't understand how bad the Petra part was, because racism and xenophobia is much more different compared to the US. Slavic people are white, but they still get seen as lesser, not as worthy, or as sex objects in the case of women. As a Slavic woman living in the west (half Bulgarian, half Ukrainian actually!) I was so uncomfortable watching that, because it's exactly how westerners see us. I've faced a lot of discrimination for being eastern European, and seeing so many people say that it's not offensive or that it's just a character was very disappointing. I'm tired of being represented this way, and I feel like any other minority would feel the same way. The worst part is that it encourages these disgusting stereotypes against us. A few people have mentioned the offensive depiction of the Ukrainian woman, Petra, and I have to agree. Russophobia (and by extension Slavo-phobia, since Americans don't see much difference between Russia, Ukraine, and other Slavic countries) has a long history in the US and has been rekindled recently (thanks Democrats, very progressive of you) and I think that Americans are really insistent in not seeing this as offensive because by American standards, where skin color is everything, Slavs are "white" and thus xenophobia towards them couldn't be real. Nevermind that we had the literal Cold War with Russia and offensive stereotypes of Russians, especially Russian women, were propagated intentionally in the US to foster nationalism and support for all attempts to sabotage the USSR...nevermind that there are a LOT of different ethnic groups in Eastern Europe and Russia and Slavs themselves historically don't see themselves as the same ethnicity as Western Europeans, or even really have the same paradigm of ethnicity that Americans have...Slavs are extremely other-ed by the West and periodically used as a total punching bag and for some reason a lot of people who claim to care about bigotry think it's ok because no one ever says anything about it so it's socially "acceptable". Not to hate on the author of this video but this is a video where she picks apart every single thing wrong with this show and somehow she didn't even see this as a problem - I feel like that says a lot! Tired of seeing it, it's not funny. (I'm not Slavic by the way, this is just extremely obvious!)

Emily reminds me of a "friend" I had who I have to admit was beautiful but she was an awful person inside. She cheated on her boyfriends(she said it's alright that she cheats on guys because her first boyfriends cheated on her so now she's allowed to cheat on all her future boyfriends.). She relished it when the two guys she was cheating on got into a fight over her(she said she felt like a heroine that knights were fighting over). She would also act like a victim if people didn't treat her like she was the main character of everyone else's story. She would make stupid mistakes and then lie that I was the one making them. She would do this condescending trick that some girls do to make themselves seem nice when in fact they are actually just trying to start drama or manipulate things in their favor, like she would say "Awwww.... don't make fun of her because of X" (nobody was making fun of me until she just invented something that could be wrong), "Awwww... she's just shy." (I wasn't shy. I just didn't want to do whatever she was trying to force me to do). /Yeah, a lot of Emily's behaviors ar infuriating, cheating aside XD, she just straight up walked onto a man's yacht because he somehow "owes her"? Seriously, "better" than shopliftig would be a mail-order bride or a prostitute (which I was called on several occasions even in "nice" Switzerland) for me, this show still is a desaster, considering that even Ukrainian government wants to sue the producers of this show because of how they portraited Ukrainian women

Emily's salary might be 70k but in France, 40% to 50% of that would never make it into her pockets. We call it the "salaire brut", meaning before taxes. The highest paid people i know make about 3 to 4k euros a month after taxes, which is considered to be a lot of money in France and still won't be that much if you happen to live in Paris, where rents start at 800 for a 15 square meter apartment in a decent neighbourhod.
