There's a REALLY easy way to do this yourself: Unplug the cassette molex connector, and strip back your auxiliary port wires so you have about 4 inches on each wire. Push your left signal wire into the white wire, female side of connector, and bend it so the wire runs along the top and one of the sides of the connector. Do the same for the right signal wire, pushing it into the orange wire. For the ground, you can get away with tucking it under a bolt or literally anywhere on the chassis of the radio because the entire chassis acts as a ground for the unit. If you really want this to be DIY, cut off the end of some old headphones and use that as your input. You have to push a cassette into the player (though the player itself doesn't have to work), but the auxiliary signal overrides the cassette so you can use any cassette. The sound is also crystal clear with no cassette hiss!

thanks for sharing. I actually was going to offer doing this for people but decided it was going to be too time consuming. This video is a cut down version of that.

I've done this, I'm a fan. I despise most aftermarket radios. The retro radios are ok, but I feel like the aftermarket could do way better.

@@FieroAustin I've found a few single din and made my own ISO mount to make them fit really well. But they took more work to make look good than doing the aux input on the stock radio. I had to replace SMD LEDs to get a color to match the Fiero and the LCD display had a fake dancing equalizer I covered with vinyl. The downsides to the radios I'm using now beside having to modify them, is they are very cheap and Chinese, The clocks are 24 hour with no way to switch them. Also there doesn't seem to be good noise cancelling on the mic for phone calls. The upside is they sound ok, not worse than a stock radio to my ears. They have Bluetooth and they are $12. They are also tiny, so you don't have to break out the support the way you used to have to do with the old CD player units. Ultimately it makes me wish I had the money to have some radios made. I know I can't be the only one wanting something that just looks stock, isn't expensive and adds all the Bluetooth/aux functions you expect. 1.5 din would be nice and could be achieved with a swappable or break away faceplate. It would definitely be targeted to the GM cars that used the 1.5 din. You could spec the volume pots to use the stock knobs from those cars if you chose too. I should check and see if I can do that with the radios I'm using now.

@@ExtraFungus Holy smokes, that is cheap. Check out the video description for the other decent looking options. I am considering offering to do this to people's OEM radios myself, but haven't got the time right now. Otherwise there's other guys that do it, but it's not cheap.

Always take off the negative terminal first. That way you don't stand the chance of shorting the positive to ground when removing the positive terminal. Install in reverse. Positive first and then negative.

yeah you are right. My negative is very difficult to access in the Fiero so I don't usually do that though.

"Installing the radio really isn't that hard" Ohhhh boy, be glad you're not dealing with the one in the late 80's Caprice where you have to remove the entire glovebox and HVAC controls to get it out.
