We thought we had seen the ultimate 2001: A Space Odyssey Discovery model with the Moebius kit, but here's an upcoming model kit that takes things up a notch. This is a prototype 1/10th studio scale model of the Discovery from Kaiyodo, with an insane amount of detail that we can't wait to build!

It's crazy to think those pieces of production design were from 50 years ago, and they still look contemporary. Many people talk about how groundbreaking Star Wars was in terms of realistic detailed miniatures but for me 2001 is where it all began. As a side note, would LOVE to see a Ronald Moore 'Battlestar Galactica' model released with that level of insane detail!

I would love to see a model of the Silent Running ship with the giant Agro domes and a ton of details, plus the little robots I don’t think I ever saw any models of Huey, Duey and Louis. Could be really cool builds especially lit!

Especially to paint it a shade of black that collects all nearby sources of light. Or even to produce geometric shapes across it's surface, now that would be cool!

After 2010 came out in theaters, I built a Discoveey model out of wood. My grandfather set up a lathe and made the sphere for the front. About four feet long. Painted the details using fine tip black markers. Wouldn't be good enough for close ups in a movie but I suspended it from the ceiling using mono filament. From ten feet away in a dark room. Lit only by a flashlight it was fun to look at. My friends who were fans of the movies and the Clarke books enjoyed it with me.

In 1972 I built a Discovery model from scratch, to use in my high school French project - telling the story of 2001 with a narrated slideshow. Mine wound up about a meter long with a paper-mache crew compartment and the backbone constructed from a balsa wood shaft with always inverting and decorated triangle segments build around it. Even though my recorded French narration was pretty much at the level of "See the space ship. See the space ship run. The space ship's name is Spot", I got an "A" for the project - the high point of my career with the French language. The Discovery model hung in my bedroom for many years, next to my Enterprise model and my life sized Silent Running robot (boy did that thing take up space!) - but sadly (or luckily?) my parents wouldn't let me paint the walls and ceiling of my bedroom flat black. I think that model is still kicking around my Mom's house somewhere to this day.

My uncle has been an SFX model maker for 40+ years and when I was a teen, I shop interned when he worked on "2010" (for Boss FX?) and I recall the challenge for him (them) was the lack of the original Discovery and they had to work solely from stills from the movie. Great to see the love for both movies lives on!

One of them showed up in an early episode of Babylon 5, and when they did another episode resolving the mystery it set up a couple of years later, the 2010 suit wasn't available, and the prop and costume department had to make a replica.

In the Pit Droids video game, one of the obstacles in Watto’s scrapyard was the EVA pod. In Builder mode you could select the pod and show it in one of four positions. It was fairly well detailed for a background element. I guess the unseen aliens in 2001 sent the pod to a galaxy far, far away.

I always love the ship models from 2001 and still love the film itself. George Lucas has said he loved 2001 when he saw it in the theaters and was inspired to make his ships with lot s of details like them but gave his ships more dirt and grime to make it look more used but we all have 2001 to thank for giving us more realistic space ships which earlier sci-fi film ships were mostly all sleek and smooth flying saucers and rockets.

My "model" was a mobile I did for an art class in 1971. As I remember it had the Discovery, reinforced with a piece of coat hanger wire (forgive me, I was in 9th grade), poor Frank Poole floating in space, the Aries 1B, a Pan Am Space Clipper, possibly a Moon Bus and other artifacts from the movie. I would have killed for models like in this video. It's amazing the staying power of the movie 2001.

Atomic City's basketball size Aries 1b was amazing. And not easy to build. Worth the big bucks. Resin...you washed all the parts first. I took photos of everything, and pics during assembly. The legs needed to be supplemented by brass tubing, and that's where you could run into problems. (The legs were adjustable). The Discovery doesn't appeal to me as a kit. It's just an odd use of space. The front end would be worthy as a stand alone kit, if big enough.

I'd have to say that's not 1/10th scale. To give you an idea, HO trains are 1/87th scale. I would say that discovery model is closer to HO or slightly larger. A 1/10th scale of the discovery would be roughly 40 foot long.

the only thing that really bugged me from the original move - and I saw it when it came out ... what the incredibly useless hands on the pods. that is the one thing they did not have the technology or money to do well. You can see them flopping around and you never really see them manipulating anything very well - although when they can just do rotation as in the manual opening of the airlock it looked cool.

I love the Eva Pod since when I was a child but that's huge! I don't understand this "fixation" of some producers for huge kits! Expecially Moebius. Lots of their kits are huge and when you examine them you realize that there is no reason for such a big model for the level of details on the kit. Somtimes I think they to huge models just for get more money! Not for technical reason. I will buy the EVA pod when they will do a smaller scale! Hals the size of that is good enough I think. And it will costs lots less too! Without loosing any details since the details on the EVA pod can be easily reproduce at smaller size. IMHO

The main reason is not more money, as you sell less in the long run. Demand for "studio scale". Not everyone wants it, but it's become a very common request. No "fixation", just responding to consumer demand. Builders want to light, and add more detail. Your thought of something half the size having the same detail has no basis in reality. It just doesn't work that way.

Rockin Jelly Bean's "Escape From Women's Prison" shirt. Not sure if they sell them in the US, I got it in Japan.
