My five year old was so giddy watching this movie, he couldn’t stop laughing and would not be quiet on the drive or in the theatre, filling me in an everything I just saw. I love to see him that happy

I work in a theater, and when the ending scene showing that one character happened, every kid lost there mind. It was so wholesome.

Jim Carrey and Knuckles makes this movie, kinda glad there was less focus on the human characters

Honestly, quite pleasantly surprised with this movie considering it's a sequel. The video game movie curse seemingly has been broken twice with this series.

I just love seeing Jim Carrey acting, that man is a Godsend.

Just got out of the theater with my friend, and as adults we had a great time as both Sonic fans and film nerds. She even screamed at the post credit scene. I'm just happy that we got a video game movie sequel that felt genuine with it's faithfulness while trying to tell a decent story, rather than be a soulless cash grab. A Sonic movie franchise is the last thing I ever thought would have this much love and care.

If its anything like the games, then yes, Sonic does just love the challenge. It's why he participates in the racing competitions with the cars or airboards rather than his own speed and powers.

There was a kid in the theater who said "Good night Sonic" when Sonic said "Good night Tails" and my friend and I busted out laughing for a solid minute

"Maybe he's like an anime character that loves the challenge." This is the actual given reason why Sonic uses a car in the kart racing games. He'd instantly win if he just ran.

I think one of my favorite parts of the movie was how quick Robotnik was to betray Knuckles, but stayed faithful to Agent Stone the whole time

The kids at my theater were actually really chill and genuine fans of Sonic. Even the post credits scene made many kids cheer about a character that hasn't even been heavily featured in over 10 years. Just shows how strong Sonic as a franchise is.

I really feel they put a LOT of love into the movie. I’m glad that it really felt like they made Sonic 2 into a really cohesive movie. Carrey did amazing again, I really enjoyed the addition of Tails and Knuckles. I thought it was a little slow during a bit after the wedding scene with the sister, but the rest of it was wonderful. I’m glad to see how they are working in the lore from the games especially with G.U.N not to mention the awesome post credit scene. I’m excited for the 3rd one.

4:30 The reason Sonic doesn’t just use his powers like that all the time is likely because he can only use so much energy before he needs to take a break. You can see in the Knuckles fight, he gets taken down easily because he ran around the labyrinth so much before the battle and had to ride an adrenaline rush to finish the battle, it also probably takes a stupid amount out of him to do the time freeze thing since he’d have to go insanely fast to do it so he probably chooses against it to ration energy out more efficiently

The humor at some points definitely made me “….ehhHhhH” but overall I loved it, knuckles was fun and his voice was fucking amazing. And the end was super cute and fun at the baseball field and the end credit scene was so exciting.

Carrey's performance carries the franchise for me, I think the dude is the perfect choice as Eggman hands down.

They did Knuckles right I always hated the idea of making him a “dumb” character his whole character is being serious and cool as well with Tails ppl tend to forget he’s literally a child one of the youngest in the game so they made him such a childish genius and i love it. Besides the cringy moments and the goofy ahh dance scene that reminds me of early 2000s movies the movie is pretty enjoyable n refreshing to the sonic fans.

This movie was amazing, it’s also funny how the movies understand the source material better than the games currently do. Knuckles not being a stupid character like the current games is also appreciated.

I'm 16 and I grew up with Sonic X. This along with Jim Carrey was very enjoyable to watch. The dance scene was fine and decently fun and the marriage in Hawaii with the crazy bride is a lot more fun then Charlie depicts it. It's not a movie for everyone but if you like sonic and Jim Carrey you'll love this.

The wedding scene will go down in history as one of the biggest twists in cinematic history! It put M. Night Shyamalan to shame!

4:17 This is actually what I think was the most understated "fix" that this movie did: how Sonic's speed is depicted, which somewhat justifies those questionable moments. The first movie did it "wrong" by portraying it like a DC Flash speed force thing whereas the games never did this. Sonic only runs fast but has great agility and spatial awareness to complement his running speed. He doesn't move in stopped time, that's straight up Chaos Control.

I think the idea of Sonic's speed being a universal problem solver is off set by him being a kid who can never think straight all the time, and that's neat. The dance battle was a little clunky, but I think it really picked up when Sonic and Tails found their groove. It was funny seeing Tails be a fan boy of Sonic and try to learn how to be more chill. Overall I loved the movie.

Becoming the best video game movie of all time certainly isn't the highest of accomplishments to beat knowing their track record, but I still gotta say this is definitely the best video game movie of all time. I would imagine and it goes without saying that people who have no prior attachment to the series or characters likely didn't see it as a big deal, but man, this movie was near perfect to me. Growing up with the series since I was so young, collecting the games, collecting the Archie comics, being the first inspiration as to why I started to draw at the time, Sonic was a central factor in my childhood like that. This movie was everything I expected it to be and more. I'll even admit my heart started to beat pretty fast during that final scene with Sonic and Eggman. I haven't been all that interested or involved with Sonic at all these past few years with the direction the series has went, but watching this genuinely made me remember how much I loved Sonic and his friends. They did it again. I'm really looking forward to the next movie.

A small correction: The entirety of the Moving Picture Company hasn't closed. Their Vancouver Branch was the one that shut down due to external market pressures and better opportunities elsewhere. The MPC even helped to do the VFX for this movie too, and other movies that still haven't come out yet.

Yeah this movie was incredible, if you are a huge Sonic nerd it’s an easy 9/10. I loved it. There is so many amazing scenes and it’s just pure fun, like Sonic and it’s characters always have been. Sonic is right there with Mario Bros, Link, Master Chief, etc… in terms of the most iconic video game characters and this movie does him justice while still being accessible to all ages and just being a joy to watch. I went home and played Sonic 2 again after seeing this lol, it was just so good!

The redemption arc of this franchise is still underappreciated regardless of the movie's quality.

I can tell you right now, me and my other 5 friends all grown ass adults, and even other adults in the cinema, cheered our hearts out at the end of movie reveal. Couldnt be more excited for a trilogy in my life

My favorite part of the first sonic movie was the homoerotic subtext between robotnik and agent stone. My favorite part of the second was all of it, but definitely how agent stone now 100% no longer just subtext has a crush on robotnik

Personally the whole wedding side plot was hilarious to me. The whole theater thought so too, a nice little detour from the main plot

while the movies obviously for children, I went to the theater with a few friends and for a group of 18-19 year old guys who like sort of ironic cringe humor the movie worked really well for us. I'd be lying if I said I was a sonic guy but I definitely enjoyed this film. it's not gonna be remembered as a super amazing 10/10 film, but for a quick night out it's perfect

Anything that comes from the games, they nailed it. The wedding scenes went on from too long and especially the dance thing I really didn't enjoy. Overall pretty good in my opinion.

“There’s definitely not things in the movie for the adults to enjoy” It doesn’t make it unbearable, definitely this is better than the first one.

The movie was great. My favorite moment was towards the after credits they revealed a major character and all the kids started screaming in excitement which also confirms a Sonic 3. If you watch the movie and the after credits, then you will obviously know who it is. I really like Jim Carrey as Dr. Eggman because he pulls of it just right and also showcases his intelligence. Especially with the giant machine that is built from scrap and how amazing it is. Overall, movie was enjoyable to watch and I didn't cringe too much at the jokes or the stuff he did since it's a kids movie. I recommend watching since it is family friendly and just a nice, enjoyable movie with the theme revolving around friendships. Good movie 8/10

The moment a sequel makes you yearn for the third part or even more, is when you know the movie is destined for somelthing. I just hope they don't go overboard with the new character coming in the third movie.

Charlie's story about the kids in the theater reminds me of when I saw No Way Home. When Green Goblin appeared on the bridge, one child yelled "WHO IS THAT?" and their sibling yelled "THAT'S THE UNIVERSE GOBLIN, I TOLD YOU ABOUT HIM IN THE LAST MOVIE!"

Well, MPC did the CGI, not the redesign. The redesign was done by Tyson Hesse, who also did the animated intro to Sonic Mania.

Carrey as Robotnik is not the supervillain we wanted, but the supervillain we needed most. also pretty sure that when the post-credits scene hit my soul ascended to another plane of existence

Hey Charlie, love your videos! Wanted to mention that MPC did not fully shut down. While their Vancouver studio shut down, their Montreal studio is still up and running; and many of my college peers worked on Sonic 2 at MPC. The VFX industry is brutal and you are correct in that they overwork their artists, but wanted to shout out the Sonic fans at MPC Montreal for putting in the awesome work. They did an amazing job!

Sonic 2 was amazing. Literally can't wait to watch it a billion times on DVD. The ending fight scenes and action scenes knocked it out of the park for a Sonic Movie.

Honestly, as a Sonic fan, this movie was chock-full of nods and references to the games and lore, and yet it was also easy enough for my two friends who aren’t Sonic fans to follow along with. And somehow they managed to ramp up the hype train EVEN MORE with the post-credits scene (eat your heart out, Marvel). Someone who I thought probably wasn’t even gonna be mentioned until maybe a fourth movie and they cracked that character open like a finely aged casket of wine.

As a long-time (since I was 3 years old) 27 years old Sonic fan, I loved the movie, there were some little nods to the old games and some jokes fans would get but this time references weren't as much as the old ones. I also saw stuff from 90s comics and cartoons in it, like some lines. Idris Elba as Knuckles slayed, truly gave that tribal warrior feel. Rest of the VA cast was top-notch. I am gonna re-watch it with dub again, because some of my favorite VAs are voicing the main cast. Jim Carrey was even better this movie, he gave that crazy bald dude impression more and more. Stupid Fortnite dance shit was cringe as fuck but as you said, it's a kids movie, and kids love that garbage of a game. I enjoyed it overall, I also enjoyed the ending but after credits made me go "WTF"... Seems iike they want to go FULL BOOST next movie.

as a younger fellow (17) and huge sonic fan the movie was very enjoyable and I really liked the humor and how ridiculous everything is like that russian guy with the tattoo of himself on his chest and even the whole wedding thing was surprisingly entertaining

I watched this with my daughter yesterday afternoon in an almost empty theater, and it was a pretty decent movie. Knuckles and Robotnik carried the show for the most part, and the action sequences were pretty fun and intense. There were a load of references to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that were great Easter eggs for fans of the original games, like Tails' plane, and the big bad at the climax of the movie (no spoilers!) I know my daughter enjoyed it more than I did, but that was most of the point anyway. I agree with Charlie's review of the movie completely, and it's definitely worth a watch in theaters.

One thing I'll say about that thing he does where he basically "freezes time" by going so fast is that it doesn't seem like he can do that very often. They show it in the second movie in a way that they never did in the first, that at this age in Sonic's life he can't run forever. Eventually he gets tired and wears out, so it makes sense that he can, in a very meta sense, only "freeze time" once per film.

I'm glad the humans were more in the backround. People are there for sonic, not the humans.

For a family movie, it does a great job. All the parents and their kids at the theater had a great time. Plus there was some neat Sonic lore. There were some cringy generic Hollywood family movie type stuff but Jim Carrey sells it. True pro. Pretty good time.

However anyone feels, this is a very enjoyable film.

I think they did the human side much better. Nothing's perfect, but when the humans did things it always involved the Sonic characters. Even though Tails was unconscious for a while, he still had a spotlight thanks to the humans using Tails's gadgets. They never seemed to stay too much on the humans

75% I must say props to paramount to get such a prestigious score is great and especially thanks to the Tyson Hesse who help with redesign of sonic and design of tails and knuckles is insane how a movie decides to delay a movie in order to get the main character design right

I absolutely loved the movie, it was so fricking awesome especially how it covered on not giving up and protecting friends and family, and egg man making his comeback was SO AWESOME

The entire ending had me 11 year me make an appearance and squealing. Sonic 2 is genuinely a pretty great movie and excites me so much for a third movie. I was thinking throughout it, “man this is so good I don’t see how it could get better unless they show *this character* but that might be too much for one movie and then BOOM.” Jim Carrey as Dr robotnik is just amazing and it’s just a good,fun,enjoyable movie that has everything it needs and more
