I disagree on the Mandalorian not being a badass. I think him messing up and getting his ass beat every so often shows him more as a person and not just a monolithic killing machine. In reality, even the most ruthless killers make mistakes. To me, that makes him a more engaging character.

I feel like they made him lucky in the early episodes because he would be seen as a Gary Stu and kicked to the curb immediately if he was popping off the entire time.

Episode 4 was actually one of my favorites. I know it's not the most original, but it's a storyline I particularly enjoy. I wouldn't say it's useless filler either. It cemented how Mando has to keep moving and can't settle down. It was also cool to see how a single Empire Walker, something we've seen destroyed plenty of times before, is actually terrifying when faced against regular people.

My favorite part about The Mandalorian (aka one part that really drew me to the show) was the relationship between Baby Yoda and Mando. Like Mando was first shown as this cold hearted, introverted solo bounty hunter, but when he meets the child (baby Yoda), you kinda see a softer hearted side to him. You see him slowly growing attached to this little adorable creature and you see his longing to protect him at all costs, and that can really say a lot about how good of a person he is deep down. Heck he risked his whole bounty hunting job, just to protect the kid. That’s what I call a good father.
