And her “sobs” are pure theater + fear of incarceration (as she said on the 911 call)! She clearly didn’t care about the baby either, because she failed to protect her despite volunteering to do so, she failed to keep the psychotic “mother” away from her, she was sleeping while the murder occurred, and her first realization while on the phone with dispatch was “I’m gonna go to jail” rather than vocalizing her concern for the child! Also, again, her “crying” was an act for the most part! End of story!!!!

I think sadly, in some way, he knew it would end with the baby dead. Maybe that's why he was so collected when they found it. He probably had hope the courts would give him the baby, that the mom would come to her senses, or something, but knew also how bad it could be..

But that has to be a tough job, being the deciding factor to split up a family. Or even worse, not splitting up that family and then the mother does something horrible. It's not always as easy as it seems from the outside.

There's not enough foster families available and if you house kids in institutions, they will be abused and neglected. I am speaking from first hand experience. There are no good options.

that statement right there made me question some things because some people are saying postpartum, but I can't think of anyone who has been in postpartum and thought of doing that. Her statement stated that putting the knife in the baby's hand so it looked like the baby had done it. She knew what she did. It's like she was making sure she was supposedly covering her tracks. so she was having a thought process in her mind.

It’s because of chemical imbalances in the brain caused after birth in some mothers. While in pregnancy, a massive amount of different hormones are going on in the body, but then during birth, and then immediately after birth, those horror, moans and chemicals can go completely out of whack. Serotonin levels or dopamine may drop massively, oxytocin levels may drop massively, and a dozen other chemicals, that I am not clever enough to fully understand, change or rise or shift in a way that can be devastating to the human brain. Many, many women experience postpartum depression. One of my very best friends suffered severe postpartum depression after having her healthy baby boy, who she spent nine months, so excited for. She ended up having to be placed in-patient for almost a week because she became a threat to herself. And the reason for that, is because she found that she did not care about her child at the time that it was a newborn. She said that she saw this precious little person that she had been so excited to meet, and a few days after bringing him home, she felt nothing. And that horrified her, made her feel like an absolutely horrible human and even worse mother. But once she was treated for what was going on, all of those symptoms went away, and she remains one of the most dedicated mothers I have ever met to this day. Postpartum psychosis is thankfully much rarer, but it is unfortunately absolutely real, and it is very poorly understood. Look at the before photos of this woman, and look at her photos at the time of her being interviewed. You can see her mental illness, clearly. This was an extremely ill woman, and an innocent child, that her family and that society failed. She should never have been in a position that she could have done what she did, because, given time and adequate treatment, she likely would have recovered from this, and she may well have become a really wonderful mom. That’s why this type of mental disorder is so devastating: it is very sudden onset, and there is no way of predicting it, and it is very rarely diagnosed, until tragedy strikes. TLDR: don’t let your own suffering and experience cloud the fact that mental illness is real, especially when it comes to women, because that allows cases like this to continue happening.

My friend said she kept seeing red and images of herself throwing her baby against the wall.

I never got to that stage but I kept envisioning myself harming my baby, like these intrusive thoughts and weird impulses to do unspeakable things to my baby and myself, even though I loved my baby so much. When I yelled at her for crying as infants do, I knew I needed help. Sleep deprivation definitely doesn't help, and my husband was unable to come help because of immigration issues so I was alone. It was all up to me to make sure I was okay and that my baby was okay. I was diagnosed with PPD and felt much better once I got on medication. They also suggested I stop breastfeeding as that may improve my mood but I decided to just supplement with formula so I could rest more. Still working through my guilt but these stories made me more vigilant in my own health care. Of course, I know that not everyone has access to adequate healthcare or education on the matter. I feel so bad for those mothers who didn't find help or refused it and then something happens because they will one day realize what they have done and that they can never take it back, and people's lives are forever changed.

I completely agree with that young man that (in the interrogation room) said she was being selfish by repeatedly asking for help. Yes, it must have been horrific to see but the CHILDREN are the ones who originally found the baby in that shape...what about them and what they need? Also, she is the one who allowed this to happen by letting a known volatile and mentally unwell mother to be in her house when she wasn't legally allowed to be there. Also, the 911 dispatcher was right when she was first on the phone and didn't realize anyone could hear her, she was calm. All of a sudden, once she realized she had an audience, the hysterics kick in. I firmly believe this is all an act to minimize the amount of trouble she's in for not abiding by the legal demands to not allow the mother in her home.

I wonder if the reason Robert handled the situation so well was because he wasn't all that surprised that this happened.

I don't think it's that simple. First medical staff have their hands tied with how long they can have a psych hold. Second when you release a patient you can't be make them be compliant with taking their meds. You can try to leave that in the hands of a relative or friend but that's no guarantee that they can do it, or that they will ask for help for fear of having the person turn against them.

Honestly, I'm not going to hold that against her. That child has only been in her care for maybe a little over a week I think (March 6-March 15) so she hasn't even developed that much of an emotional attachment to the baby. So her first instinctual reaction to the death of the little baby made sense. Blood relation has very little to do with the level of love she would have for the baby in this case if she's only known it for a short while. What does make her the asshole is the fact that she accepted the role of looking after the baby when she knows she's been dealing with health problems and personal problems that could affect the level of care the baby receives. She didn't take seriously the fact that her niece was going through a scary medical illness and let her have access to the baby because she couldn't handle looking after the baby by herself. She was incredibly irresponsible which led to the death of an innocent baby. I'm not done watching the whole video but I wouldn't be shocked if she was charged for negligence because her actions are a prime example of that. Edit: Oh god, I'm shaking my head at the family. Cindy, Debora's niece and Deasia's sister, was the one who took charge and said the baby needed to stay with the family and knew that Debora was reluctant to take the baby in. I'm side eying her to the extreme right now. And now that I think about it, Deasia has been staying with Debora even before she got temporary custody of the baby. And no one in the family thought this was an issue? This whole family needs to self-reflect on themselves. LOL, Cindy is talking to the investigator about how Deasia isn't allowed around the baby in such a calm voice as if this whole thing has nothing to do with her. I'm okay with Debora crying her eyes out because it sounds like the guilt is eating her up inside but damn, Cindy is acting so cold blooded about this whole thing. She's got blood on her hands too. She's the one who said she'd pitch in and help and she's been in the know about Deasia staying with Debora too. I'm speechless. I'm not sure how I feel about Deasia trying to shift the blame of who killed Janiyah. On one hand, I know she's been diagnosed with Post Partum Psychosis but after treatment and what looks to be a very sober mind, she's trying deflect responsibility of what happened to her baby. All the evidence pointed to her and her immediate response is "I didn't do it" and that her aunt did it. She didn't even need to blame her aunt here, she could have just said I don't know what happened. She pointed the finger to someone who took her in when she was at her lowest. It doesn't really reflect well on her. If she had any love left for her daughter, she owes it to her to tell the truth instead of running away from it. Holy crap, just got to the part where Deasia confessed to what happened. It made me feel sick. Considering how she was able to remember the gruesome details of what occurred, it's clear she didn't want to take responsibility of what she did and tried to blame her aunt for it. So all those denials before of saying she can't have done it and that her aunt did it and how she just doesn't know... she knew this whole time. It's one thing to acknowledge she wasn't in her right mind during the act of committing the crime, but after the fact? After getting sobered up and trying to push the blame on someone else when she knew she was the one who did it... if the police didn't have damning evidence on her, would she have admitted to it? It's a scary thought.

Robert is amazing. The way he handled that call as calmly as he could, the way he was strong and consoled his mom. What an incredible kid.

Seriously. He's an excellent dad as well. Saw what happened, got his kids the hell out the door to safety, and went back in to figure it out. I truly hope everyone, but especially that little kid who unfortunately saw the scene, is in proper counseling. They've got a real father behind them.

Robert had to stand there with his OWN CHILDREN as a LITERAL infant had been mxrdered by their own mother, and by his mother. Everyones talking about the call because imagine that, imagine you have to make a 911 call while having your own mother as the mxrderer, your baby sister that had been deceased and mxrdered by your own mother, your children at the house, and other relatives there as well. Now cynthia, i can understand the case being sick, but the only sick person there was Deasia. Robert had nothing to do with the death, infact he was sure of the infant being taken care of, by CPS and Deasia's auntie. Also, i have no clue what went on inside your brain to make you think Robert could've done this, they had clearly set out a timeline from the auntie, Robert's 911 call and Deasia's confession/guilt plead. You could hear the scare in his voice and the realization that it was reality for him. She probably heard the baby crying all the time and was able to sleep through it. They also said she was on medicine so that might’ve made her less likely to wake up. Lots of scenarios. I’ve slept through tornados. Don’t blame that lady for doing what she thought was right for mother & child.

The baby might've been dead already after the first blow to the head.. She was only 3 months old after all and they're really fragile.. But I do agree that Deborah should've been charged as well.

The mother said she threw the baby and it wouldn't stop crying, that's when she decided to bang it's head numerous times on the bookshelf and then took it to the kitchen.

I was on the border of this. The delusions started and I immediately got help. It’s really scary. I have a hard time with this case because she didn’t even try to help herself. Or seemed to not want to.

You sticking by her and helping her through that time was a tremendous help. Trust me without family understanding and support, it only makes things worst. I can truly admit that if my husband didn’t take the time to notice that things weren’t right and help me through ppp after our first child, I’m not sure I would have been able to do it alone while trying to raise our baby. Some of the things he told me, that I was saying and doing, I can’t remember up until this day. It was frightening. By the time we had our second daughter 10 yrs later, we had preventative measures in place just in case I ended up suffering from ppp again, and fortunately those measures we had in place helped both of us.

It is very common at some level and I wish ppl would take it more seriously. It's heartbreaking.

Back then they didn’t put you into treatment for PTSD. They should have!!

I don't know because I've never been in that traumatizing situation, but maybe she saw the baby after Robert got her in the kitchen, confused, in disbelief or knowing she( herself) was asleep and now dreaming before actually coming to the realization once she heard the dispatcher saying "911" either way, I see the dispatchers point but even in a soft tone (my psychology experience with a master's degree) would state the operator was being either subconsciously or knowingly argumentive. In this case of call this would be inappropriate. But, I don't know any of their mindset🤷🏽‍♀️

She was trying to get ahold of the situation I'm sure, especially considering that s knowing that a baby was brutally murdered was pretty horrible but it seems as tho Deborah was more concerned for herself than what was actually happening. She knew she was at fault. She knew that, while she didn't actually murder that baby, she definitely had a MAJOR hand in it.

This unfortunately is PP & without medication everyone should have watched her when she was around her precious baby..never to leave her alone with the baby.. too many fills sorry for the moms & think a moms could never do this however, it happens entirely too often.. You have to listen to the whole recording- the dispatcher totally escalated the situation. The poor guy had to tell her in like, five different ways that the baby was beyond rescue, before she finally told him the cops were on route. ( I’ve noticed that since then, more dispatcher get that information to the caller right up front. Because yeah, say that FIRST, then ask a bunch of questions.)

i know what she did was unspeakable, but people are being so inconsiderate, yes, she killed her baby, and thats unacceptable, but that shits real, and ive seen it first hand. my mom was pregnant 12 (maybe more) times, and what it does to a person is insane. its really hard to grasp how they can be loving and fine one second and want to harm or kill the baby the next second. its a struggle. i hope baby janiyah rests in peace, and i hope deasia gets the help she needs. ive never experienced it first hand, so i cant say i completely understand, but from what my family has told me, and what ive seen with my own eyes, my mom had it happen to her more than once, and that it was absolute hell to help with and deal with for both parties. i feel bad for everyone.

@@shr0om1ez I never realized till I had my first baby just how much havoc pregnancy and birth can wreak on the body. Nobody really ever talks about the darker side of pregnancy. I knew of course that it could be uncomfortable, unpleasant and bring out or worsen certain health problems but didn't know the extent till I was pregnant with my son. My pregnancy was a nightmare and while I didn't have post partum psychosis, I did have severe post partum depression among other pysch symptoms that I had never had before. OCD, intrusive thoughts, paranoia, agoraphobia and panic attacks. I didn't even get into all the physical problems I had and still have even after 8 years. Post partum psychosis and depression are horrible, I feel for any woman who has to go through it. Having a baby is supposed to be an amazing moment in a woman's life, and its awful that these types of ailments exist :/

A buddy of mine responded to this scene (EMS). He has such bad PTSD that he had to quit his job and is struggling day to day. I can only imagine what Robert and his kids are going through mentally.

@@michaelwoodall9295 Man that’s so messed up. This isn’t the 1st time I’ve heard something like this. I was working as a laborer for a pipe surveying company & a new guy started. He said he’d just left a job at the coroners office or whoever goes to retrieve the bodies & put them in the bags to transports them. He was only working there for about 2 weeks when they were called to pick up the body of an infant/toddler & it really fucked him up. Usually they’ll have at least 2 guys come to carry out the bodies. But he said he remembers holding the baby’s lil body bag in his arms carrying them to the van by himself. He said he was never the same. He quit the next day. And they made pretty good money.

He really was amazing . I don’t like how that monotone , obnoxious dispatcher talked to him . She needs retraining asking the same stupid questions he answered for her several times

@@groberts80 the dispatcher was great actually. That's what they're trained to do, and yes re asking questions is standard to make sure you have a clear view on the situation. Emergency Services need to know what they're walking into.

A family member was given temporary custody of a baby until the mother was well enough to resume raising them, this is fairly common. The aunt ignoring orders and letting the mother come around was stupid, but not something that could have been predicted. It's unfortunately very common for family members to ignore psychologists when they say that someone is too dangerous to be around someone else, they don't want to believe it.

CPS pretty much insisted the Aunt take on the,baby,she was in i’ll health ,so should not of had CPs insist she took on the baby ,then give her no help or support . It is stated that due to her physical illness she was reluctant too take on the baby,. I’ll bet CPS wasn’t giving the aunt was financial aid or given so she pay for help. The aunt Was i’ll and left to cope alone ,offered the right aid,she would would probably not of had the mother their. It seems that the mother in the delusion of post partial illness the mother believed the baby was an incarnate demon so she killed here . The whole tragedy could have been avoided with plenty of help in caring for her nieces baby girl . Just another case of CPS not doing the right thing . @@BookishDark most people are not trained on how to deal with relatives suffering from psychosis and would never foresee this kind of horror, a lot of people take mental illness lightly and aren’t able to grasp how fast things can escalate until something absolutely horrible happens, like in this unfortunate tragedy. My heart goes out to her as I hope she is able to forgive herself for her mistakes and find the strength to move on from this all.

She was definitely responsible for the demise of that child, she knowingly let her niece with clear mental health issues be with the baby. She sat there and helped her be close to the baby, she should be sentenced as well for disobeying orders and basically assisting in this poor child’s death.

The detective's breakthrough moment was when he said James had asked to talk to her, James said he was the only one that could get through to her and her family still loved her and worried about her. You know, I'm far from religious but if there's something akin to hell in the afterlife, that guy might be heading there as well.

They were lying when they basically told her good people can harm babies. When you see detectives being friendly with the likes of Edmund Kemper, sharing meals with Todd Kohlhepp, or asking someone like Nick Browning if he wants anything, they are building rapport. If they served only their feelings, they'd never get confessions or answers.

I'd pretty much agree that this is fucked up regardless of how reasonable he manages to sound. Fact is, she refused to talk to the police (literally, not talking is refusing to talk) and they interrogated her for six hours instead of getting her a lawyer. You don't have rights unless you say the magic words. It's ridiculous.

This is just too heartbreaking and disturbing. I Can’t help but disagree with the sentencing, I believe she deserves life in a psychiatric ward. I’m no psychologist but if someone can explain in justify her state mind. My god, I can’t understand the law process that allow 15 years to life with a chance of parole.

Just THINKING about it makes me sick to my stomach. Makes me respect first responders a lot more for all they have to encounter.

No, the aunt new she wasn't right in the mind atm. She is just as much to blame. She knew the conditions and she ignored them. Not to mention, she's crying and freaking out because she's going to jail, as she states herself, NOT because an infant's head was just smashed in on her kitchen counter. She did not care for that baby enough and she allowed that to happen to the baby by being absent. Of course the mother was to blame for the death but if she were monitored and gotten the help she needed (like being monitored to take her meds), that baby would most likely be alive and well today.
