Just as an aside, anyone wanting to dig into the issues of using the standard BNC input jig Analog Discovery comes with when testing amps without a common output ground (aka most Class D!) the author of our beloved Audio Analyzer suite goes into the "why" a bit in the help file for his latest version, including this paragraph: "Also I do not recommend using the BNC adapter available for the Analog Discovery, the problem with the BNC adapter is that the Analog Discovery is designed with differential inputs however the BNC adapter will connect both negative inputs to ground making the inputs single ended. This means if you are measuring an amplifier with bridged outputs it will short the negative output to ground and cause damage to either the amplifier or the measurement equipment" .

My main interest is building point to point tube amps. And I’m looking to better understand how and why they work. Low budget is not as important to me. But overall I look for authenticity in YT channels. Rick Beato has gotten pretty big. But he’s always been authentic which is why I like his videos. Same with you.

8:38 Agreed. If your system is resolving enough, poor(er) quality recordings will be exposed for what they are. Recordings that sound great on a boombox or car stereo will not necessarily have that same “fun factor” on an audiophile system. But that’s ok because on the flip side, a resolving system showcases well-made recordings for their brilliance.

The Q&A idea sounds great, and I just don't like livestreams. It seems like some channels start small as just a hobby and they say they will never change. Then they get popular and the companies start sending them free stuff and then they get sponsorships, then they get invited to conventions or shows with paid expenses. They jump on the Patreon bandwagon since they quit their regular job and become a KZfaq "influencer" for the fame and glory and bucks. Their opinions and reviews are now always positive to keep the good times going. It seems like it happens with everything. Hey, I saw that Amazon now has the PSVANE Horizon KT88 tubes listed. They have them in matched pairs, but what if I need a quad?

You do a better job at explaining the why and how. They may have bigger number of followers. But for real I watch your channel due to how you do it from inception, design of layout of parts and why you layout the parts. To testing and fixing to get the correct electronic testing plus how and why. I’m on your channel for the day one paper to layout to trimming the system for the best musical clarity. They don’t give the personal touch that I get so much out of your channel. Get em Skunkie.

If you want reference quality vinyl, take a look at the 45rpm releases at Acoustic Sounds. The funnest and best sounding ones have been Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow .... just stellar. Also Crosby Stills and Nash, Foreigner ST, Stone Temple Pilots. They are all 2 LP sets and run around $60. I have no problem spending that money for reference quality releases and those I mentioned are and IMO how all vinyl should be made, The Jeff Beck one is mind blowing. CSN too ..... enjoy!

If you are diving into class d amps, would be curious to hear your thoughts on the Hypex modules. I truly believe not just anyone can do it & keep people watching. You have to be yourself & be relatable or interesting in some type of way. The build videos and tubes in general arent going to be of interest of all hifi lovers. To me 14k subscribers is a lot. There are 14k strangers out there that are somewhat like minded & enjoy something about you & what you have to say.

@@EskWIRED I have an Advent 300 receiver, Advent 3 speakers, Technics SL-5 T-T which I'm currently upgrading with a high-output MC cartridge, a Marantz "Super CD"/DVD player, and Denon DRM-800 cassette deck. Also, AKG 701 headphones. Not a typical "high-end" system, but I got everything off of Ebay, for a fraction of what the average technically incompetent "audiophile" would spend on an amp, alone. I have a VERY FEW CDs & LPs that sound great, but not many. The main problem with most source material appears to be over-driving the mike amps. The vocals distort like hell on intense passages, but sound OK when the levels drop. Is it the band's fault, or is it that the producers are goading the recording engineers to "Make it LOUD! Make it LOUD!" Some videos on KZfaq maintain it's the latter!
@EskWIRED
@EskWIRED Ай бұрын
@@Pootycat8359 Thats exactly the problem I hear on Yes albums. And any number of remastering tricks can't change it. And neither can any of the downstream playback equipment. I agree with you completely that good quality source material is essential for getting good sound.

Hi Stephe, since you ask, for me the small channels are always better becasue they are more authentic. It even happens that I join small channels and then as they grow, I loose interest. Small channels also allow for meaningful discussions in the comments (although you may think this is an Achilles heel, the opposite is true). When channels get bigger, they get more trolls and what is nearly as bad they get an explosion of chills. Personally I do not like life streams because they have a low information density, not to be confused with attention span. Regarding what I like, I prefer audio channels that are more technical oriented. I am fascinated about the X factor of audio (to steal a phrase of the original Top Gear). For instance a Dual 1019 turntable with a Shure M35 cartridge, it will loose almost any A/B test with modern (and also vintage) HiFi turntables. "Ok test is over lets listen to some music... No, no, what are you doing? Put the record on the Dual!!!" As for the Chi-Fi class D amps, I do not think any of them has that X factor, like a good tube amp has, or a vintage receiver. No, I did not listen to them all but as long as they all use the same TI chip and copy the application notes (and Kudos to TI for the amazing products they make) what do you expect? PS, bonus: My absolute favorite audio review channel: Stereo review X My favorite esoteric audio channel: Real world Audio
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics Ай бұрын
Yeah, in my short testing, these class D amps have no "X factor" and seem to sound the same. I hope this op-amp has a real impact! And I do try to interact with folks in the comments, and block/ban trolls with off topic crap no one wants to see.
@hugobloemers4425
@hugobloemers4425 Ай бұрын
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics It would be really interesting if you would have this interview or chat with this guy. I can see why putting such op-amp in a class D amp is done, and even more from a marketing perspective. But what if it fails to impress? would that be the fault of the op-amp or the class D amp? To see what this op-amp is capable of, I would think you would have to do a run off against a reference phono amp. It should be easy to make a phono amp with op-amps. It would make great YT content as well. Can a discrete op-amp hold its own against a tube in a phono amp? I am sure people would like that :)

I like the smaller ones like Flux Condenser, Geraldine HiFi or you, and I like the larger ones that stick to their guns like Uncle Doug, Fran (who inspired me to start mine) or Mr Carlson's Lab. Unfortunately the reality of commercial channels is that they have to appease "The Almighty Algorithm" to even stay afloat, let alone grow - while the teeny tiny ones have it hard to even get out there. It's just a massive competition for people's time and attention - viewers will prioritize some content over another, often based on totally superficial factors like thumbnails etc., so a lot of content remains unwatched even if it's informative and insightful.

Although I understand the implied reason of comparing things with the dollar value, I really just wish people would stop doing it. It can be very arbitrary. Do you want to drop a quarter Mill on Dan's massive aluminum block green illuminated model blocks? Or would you rather spend a couple grand on a push pull KT120 amplifier that's going to give you a ton of power. I know that comparison maybe apples and oranges but I'm just trying to point out that paying literally a hundred times more for something means absolutely nothing to me when it comes to the sound. It's something I see with the audio cable market. More expensive is better. I see it as an auto mechanic and I'm working when I'm working on cars with customers. Except as you probably know it's the other way around haha. Just a thought and a bit of a rant. I'm excited to see that other thing that ayima sent you. Don't want to turn this I also am very happy that you're getting contacts in the manufacturing end of things. Great on you! Thank you

I do agree in concept, and I try to avoid the "it sounds OK considering the price" but it's hard not to do it. A modified A12 is a bargain in tube hifi, but it's far from the best EL34 amp I have ever heard. Like on the other side, I don't think those $1500 WE 300B tubes are a good value, even though they are good sounding 300B tubes. There are much cheaper tubes that sound as good or better.
