In this episode, I turn my attention to the native Malay martial art of Silat, and visit Guru Zainal Awab Boonsong to find out more.

It is hard to talk about Silat Melayu without mentioning Silat Seni Gayong and Dato Meor Abdul Rahman. A true Malay Silat Warrior. There are many style of Malay Silat and it’s difficult to cover all. Thank you for taking the time to cover Malay Silat!

Even though the master displayed only a bit of his art, but his explanation of the cultural aspect of Silat is in depth, and rich in history. Well done for being able to showcase it here. 👍

Marvellous, many thanks :) I trained in Pencak-Silat under Jan De Jong, in Perth, Western Australia, for about ten years - starting in 1980 (I had been training in other stuff since about 1965) . My focus since then has been more Chinese based, however my Silat is still with me and will always be :)

Nice video, if you want to get a more complete view of Silat it is also a must to visit Sumatra and West-Java, the origin of some of the most famous Silat styles. Styles like Cimande, Cikalong, Sera, Kari, Madi and Silek Tuo Minang. Malaysian Silat is in some ways quite different than Indonesian Silat.s

Guru Zainal merely describes about the Silat school that he's trained in. There are many other Silat schools in Malaysia that didn't begin from either the Orang Asli or any form of tribal dance. The Malay people are not one and the same with the Orang Asli. The Malay people have been inhabiting the entire Malay Archipelago for aeons. The archipelago is huge in terms of its size. Back when there were no Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore etc, the Malay Archipelago was already in existence.
