Middle Earth Monster Mash episode 30!
Ep. 13 explained the round robin and elimination rounds, and now that the Balrog has won our elimination tournament, we're putting him up against a couple special challenges! This time he'll face none other than the Dark Lord Sauron!

Games Workshop recently released updated rules to their Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game (SBG), combining the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings SBG games into one and giving much-needed updates to the core rule set and to most of the model profiles.
We've been practicing with the new rules (and the fabulous new boxed set "Battle of Pelennor Fields!"), and this video series will focus just on monster heroes, as explained in this intro video. We'll show you all 16 monster heroes (only the named character monsters with hero rules, other than Sauron and Smaug whom we're saving for later), we'll show you their profiles, explain their special rules, and then battle for supremacy in true [mini] "Battle Report" style!

Great match!! It came really close, Sauron has an amazing profile and so does the Balrog. This monster mash shows you how important is might on the game. Looking forward to the next one!!

Loved this series and this is one I’ve been looking forward to for a LONG time! Just a potential watch out for getting Will back on a 6 - don’t you need to declare which dice is the ‘free’ Will as you can’t claim back your ‘free’ will point on a 6, only the ones you’ve spent from the store. It probably wouldn’t have made any difference but worth noting anyway 😊

Thanks Benji! And yes, you're completely right: we should've marked will when resisting, and used a separate die for the free will from "resistant to magic". We realized that after and didn't want to bother re-recording, especially because it hadinimal impact, but in all properties we should have. Thanks for commenting!

Only thing I noticed was when you're rolling for resist you should seperate the resistant to magic dice as if that's a natural six it does not get refunded.

hey guys, i know this video is 3 years ago, just wanted to comment and clarify something either for myself or yourself as im a touch confused. it seems you guys are playing it that suaron must pass a courage test for the balrogs terror, before he even cast a spell. is that correct how your playing it or have i missed somthing? in the rules for magic it says a model can use a cast before they even move if they wish, meaning Sauron could cast and then attempt to charge the balrog and then roll the terror test. cheers, fun video.

Indeed, you're correct that you can cast a spell before you move, and we could've done that differently in the video. There are loads of important little nuances like that in this game. Great comment. We'll get it right eventually! lol

Im a little confused at 20:32. When resisting a magic spell, does the enemy roll to see if he gets higher or equal to what you rolled to cast or to the roll needed to cast (transfix 2+ drain will 4+) ? I ask this because if the second point made is true then surely he resisted as he got a 3,3, and 2 and transfix is a 2+. Unless I've been playing wrong all this time....

Thanks for asking. It is the former, not the latter. Sounds like you may have been playing it wrong. The rule book explains it pretty well: the caster rolls first, and then must roll the minimum required for the spell to be successful, otherwise the spell outright fails. Eg: 2+ transfix means that the caster needs to roll at least a 2. After the spell has been cast successfully, then the target/victim can choose to resist the spell. If they wish to resist, they must roll at least the same value as what the caster rolled, regardless of what the caster needed to roll (ie: the casting minimum is not actually relevant to resisting). So if you attempt to transfix and only need a 2+ but manage to roll a 5, then the spell is cast with a casting strength of 5, and the target victim needs to roll a 5+ in order to resist. The number of die they roll when resisting is related to the number of will points they spend (or if they have extra rules like Resistant to Magic then they will get extra dice), and they only need to roll successfully on one of their dice, regardless of how ever many die they roll, but they must roll equal to or greater than the casting strength (the 5+).
