Just a guess. When they practiced for the duels in prequel star war films, they used 'swords' made by attaching a long pole to the Lightsaber handle. I imagine this is why the fight moves look similar, because the 'sword' would have center of mass further from the handle, just like the montante.

Funnily enough, the final saber fight in Episode I between Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Darth Maul actually had the footage slowed down in editing because it looked too fast and unrealistic.

@@I_Give_No_Fux_ tbf, a lot of the move sets in dark souls are fairly different to how the weapon would actually be used. With some weapons it can be argued that the moveset was made for fighting large creatures, like the Asylum demon in DS1.

@@wutulike7861 Technique is used for all points above, but I never spin the great sword around when i'm using it. I'm just assuming they can't grapple, or close like way in, and half-sword stab for the body, cause that is what i'd be doing if someone was swinging there sword around like that. If you run at someone like that, with you're sword vertical, you can block any incoming strike if there sword is waving around in circles super high like that. Only spinning strike I ever do is waving the sword above, and behind my head briefly into a good 'ole leg chop. I don't have nearly the level of training at this particular practice tho, so I don't really have an understanding of why or why they don't do certain things.

@@ethanmcqueen3548 having used a montante/greatsword multiple times I can tell you with utmost certainty that using longsword techniques douse not work, you can halfsword it ofcorse but thats about it, you especially can't grapple as you'd have to drop the sword entirely as the balance/weight of a montante is completely different form a longsword (montante's basically have the opposite balance of a rapier and heavy enough that practically no one can keep it in a guard position one handed) even holding a normal guard stance for any length of time tires you out completely so its best to keep the blade moving, secondly trying to statically block a montante with a vertical block with a longsword or even a montante is as difficult as statically blocking a longsword with a one handed arming sword so deflectional parry's are the way to go (p.s. just adding my observations to the discussion, not trying to correct you directly)

I could be totally wrong, but in this kind of situation with two-handed sword vs two-handed sword, shouldn't the players revert to longsword techniques instead of using twirly montante forms designed to ward off multiple smaller weapons?
@Bandit2136 жыл бұрын
Could also be said that they should instead close to grapple, using the weapon as an assault shield.
@sortofcephalopod89725 жыл бұрын
I think they train like that because a big part of using the montante is momentum. Its incredibly easy to react to the montante if you were just striking from a longsword guard.

Is there any thrusting action in montante/zweihander/spadone? I feel like a thrust would be way faster than a swing. (though a beat would be hard to recover from; probably resembling bayonet fighting) Or, because this is designed for countering pikes and the like, is that just a horrible idea?
@J-IFWBR2 жыл бұрын
i think its also made to be used against rapiers and daggers.
@knightmareza94782 жыл бұрын
All the montante things I've seen have thrusts worked in very often. Same with the german sources. I'm guessing they didnt just because getting hit with a thrusts hurts a lot more than a swing. I figured that our for myself with something as soft as a foam sword. The synthetic swords hurt enough that even after one day of practicing it we decided to hold off until we could get some hard chest protection. These were with one handed swords mind you. I don't even want to consider how much it sucks getting stabbed with a plastic montante.
