so much of what you talk about is what i do with my little boy (just turned 2): he is in a big boy bed, picks his own clothes, goes to potty and dresses himself as much as possible, cuts his own fruit (with a safe knife of course),... I just never knew there was a name for this style of parenting where kids are allowed to handle quite a bit of responsibility, when they are ready for it and without forcing them. Will definitely be looking into this more now!!! great tips ;)

My parents always told me and my sister that santa was just pretend, this was both because of religion but we were also so poor. I also remember my mom saying that other kids believe it because that’s what their family believes in. I remember my dad made a comment like “yeah isn’t it amazing how each family is different!” And I was never sad about it and never wanted to tell other kids btw, I think the way my parents just made it so simple helped me understand both sides. This and other things like that really helped me be a better logical thinker for life :)

This sounds a lot like how my family handled it. We didn't celebrate Christmas for religious reasons, but I was taught to be respectful and allow other kid's parents tell them or let them figure it out on their own. I was still honest about my beliefs when asked though and would explain exactly why we didn't celebrate it. I was never upset we didn't celebrate holidays either because I understood why 😊

My 4yo is just like Kylie, dropping subtle hints about toys in the shops! The wishlist approach has always worked well for us, and sometimes I'll take a picture on my phone as well, it definitely ticks the right boxes for them. I vividly remember being obsessed with toy aisles and shops as a kid because they were "forbidden", so I'm trying to demystify them for my kids. If they ask to look at toys I'll say yes, but as you say be very clear that we're not buying toys today. I continue to be amazed by how open understanding he is to these conversations!

The picky eater question resonates with me as a former picky eater.. I used to stay behind in daycare with the chefs because I wouldn't eat most anything (Belarus daycare really wanted kids to actually EAT). That didn't help me eat more or a greater variety of foods. But then I got older, I saw my parents eating more varied foods, and slowly my palate changed. And now I'll eat anything but blue cheese 🙈 And my favorite foods are things like beef tartare, fried intestine, and spicy Korean dried squid 🤷‍♀️ It'll take me a while to find moments in the day to get through the whole video but this first question hit so hard, I had to pop on to comment! Just keep offering and modeling!

Adding to what Ashley mentioned in this vlog, just because kids are independent or want to do things by themselves that does not mean it is only Montessori. My children are very independent and curious little people and we are not a Montessori family. I think children these days are so astute and really wise beyond their years that they really surprise us all the time. My oldest who just started Kindergarten is actually quite brave as well and when I explain to him the reason behind vaccinations, etc. he is more than willing to cooperate when getting his shots. I really think it is a generational aspect as well and not JUST a Montessori thing. Respect to all the different ways our children are being raised out there! Thank you for the part 2! 👍

I don't know why this q&a in particular made me so emotional! 😂 1. Kylie's reaction to shots made me tear up with pride, and I only know of your family through YT! I have given many many vaccines in my life as a pediatrician, and that kind of response is so rare! ❤️ 2. I feel you on the parental arguments. It is so stressful growing up in a household where your parents are constantly fighting. I also remember taking my baby brother out of the situation and distracting him whenever that happened. He is a much more well adjusted young man now than I was when I was his age, and I'd like to think part of that was my contribution!

I've done the running wish list too and it works GREAT. I actually take a pic of them holding the toy, book, etc. too. Another fantastic tip I learned is that you can tell your child that when they are of age, they can buy whatever they want. (This always get a big smile.)

In Greece there was a Christian Saint that his name equals to santa claus in greek and it was he and three other saints that '' protected'' Kids and education. (Άγιος Βασίλης Καππαδοκίας) I think its a great story to tell a kid even if we haven't done a christening for our Child and we aren't going to, so he can be able to choose his own relegion or not choose at all. Great video as you always Do! Very informative. I also have a comment about you... I am a teacher and when I hear you its like music to my ears because you explain everything in such a way that even a kid could follow montessori educational approach on his/her own! 👏👏👏🙏

When my 5 year old sees things she would like, I ask her if it’s a need or a want. If it’s a want, I say that’s great, it’s awesome to want things but it’s important we think about things before we buy them, how about we think about this item over the next couple days and when we come back to the store next we can decided if we still want it or not. It’s never been an issue and only once had she decided it was still a want the next time we came back and we brought her own money to buy it.

I grew up with being forced into hugging and kissing extended family. Most of these people I saw so rarely that they were practically strangers. This lead to me feeling incredibly uncomfortable and upset. I understand that other family members may not get on board with montessori principles, but not letting extended family pressure any future children I may have into doing this is a firm boundary for me.

@@msi8311 Thank you. At least from my perspective, I’m seeing more of a general respect for children’s body autonomy than I ever saw as a child. I do still see a lot of children not being treated as their own person though, and hope that can keep improving.

I will never understand parents forcing their kids to kiss and hug extended family. I have two kids of my own and working on teaching my family that my kids are not obligated to kiss or even hug them if my kids don’t want to it’s def hard as they do get butt hurt they feel like they are entitled to it and that’s so far from wrong I teach my daughter when she doesn’t want to I say “say bye” or “give them a high five” lol since she doesn’t know how to shake hands yet

About relatives who are not aligned with Montessori principles -- we have a lot of family members who are very good at entertaining children, like really engaged free play, new art projects, fun new toys etc. My toddler obviously loves it and prefers it to our usual time at home when adults do not actively entertain him that much. I have a lot of fixed feelings about it...

When shopping at the store if my daughter sees something she wants I tell her I understand she wants it but that it’s for someone else today. She still gets upset sometimes but I think it’s a useful way of explaining that these things aren’t ours and sometimes they are meant for other people.

Not something listing articles but a list of advices like: “we Montessori at home so: 1. We prefer wood over plastic…” and so on… Would be so helpful as a printable!

When I was little, I watched a movie that somewhat tried to get at the origin of Santa as well. I think it was the newer remake of The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus? And at that point my parents told me about St. Nicholas (tho whether that's a real person from a Montessori perspective gets a bit hazy I feel like) and how people wanted to keep that spirit of giving and protecting alive by creating Santa.

love these q&as. i hope you can answer this with regards to turn taking/sharing/waiting. what if in the scenario a toddler wants a toy the other one has and its clear as day he's not giving it up, maybe the rest of the playdate. and the other wants to do absolutely nothing but want that exact toy. or, what if 2 kids wants everything they each have at one of their houses? eg kid A goes to kid Bs house and plays with his car. Kid A says minemine. They fight. Kid A takes the car. Kid B sees another toy, lets the car go and takes the toy boat. Kid A drops the car and tries taking the boat. then what? And, what is the same happens in a playspace that the toys belong to neither kid? thankyou!

We’ve started a tradition when we go to target with my 14 month old that he can pick out a book. The hope is that we set up the expectation that he doesn’t get toys there but does get to pick something out and have a say, and reading is so important to us. And if we’re at any other store we can say “no we only get books at target” or something. I’m hoping this doesn’t lead to too much entitlement but I love getting him books (for my sanity too ha ha…I can only read Skyfire so many times).

re: answering questions about school... I always found that right after a whole day of Using My Brain and talking to 20 other kids the whole "remembering events in sequence and articulating them as a narrative" thing just wasn't happening and I needed food/time/sleep to consolidate it. Bits and pieces will come up at bedtime/in the morning/on the weekend. I'd put that first week of info-dumping down to the very high novelty and excitement 😂.

Transparency when it comes to doctor's visits is SO important! I've had two operations in my lifetime. One was when I was five (I had tubes put in my ears and my tongue clipped). The other was when I was about 11 (tonsils removed). When I was in the hospital getting my tonsils removed, the doctors started sticking me with needles and poking and prodding me. Nobody told me what was happening. I kept asking, but nobody would answer me. I fought them when they tried putting the mask on me because they just stuck it on my face without any warning or explanation. Who wouldn't freak out? I was FIVE when I had my first surgery. I remember the doctors putting a mask on me, telling me it was the gas that would put me to sleep, and telling me to count. I didn't get that experience when I was 11. Needless to say, that was a traumatizing experience. I still get freaked out by it and it's been about 18 years since it happened. Seriously, it would've taken them a few seconds to tell me what they were doing before they did it. And had they done that, I would've complied without any fighting. It wasn't an emergency surgery. I wasn't in a state of shock. I was in a proper mental and physical state to understand the doctors (at least, if they explained using terminology a middle schooler could understand- I don't know if I would've understood all of the technical and medical terminologies). They could've talked to me. THIS is why I believe you should respect your child when it comes to medical visits. Make sure your doctor explains what they're doing throughout the visit. Have them name the tools and talk about the function. Why does the doctor want to see your child walk or feel their belly or back? It can be explained at the child's level.

@HapaFamily
@HapaFamily 2 жыл бұрын
I will likely explain to her that other kids think he’s real because their parents haven’t yet told them he’s not real - and that eventually they will figure it out or their parents will tell them, but it’s best to respectfully keep that information to herself for now. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m not going to encourage her to spill the beans, obviously, but I feel like… ultimately, I’m not responsible for other parents choosing to lie to their kids? It’s almost like a natural consequence (for the parents) if it happens to come out while their kid is at school… 😬 #sorrynotsorry?

You could also approach Kylie with the opportunity to buy an item with her allowance. If it's something she seems really excited about, you can give her two choices: we can put it on the Christmas/Birthday wishlist or we can make a plan so you can save up your money to pay for it (depending on the item/cost, it might be that she needs to save up for the entire thing OR you may only have her save up for a portion of the item). I was 5 when bought my own $100 dollhouse. I used Christmas/Birthday money, of course, but I also made sacrifices. If my dad took me out to get a slurpee, I would ask if I could have the dollar for my dollhouse instead of the slurpee.

I tried letting my 4.5yo know she was having her flu shot a few days in advance so there was no surprises. I don't think it helped. She was in hysterics every night for about 2 weeks after because she didn't want that needle. It happened with her previous vaccinations too. I'm not sure if there's some autism or if its normal behaviour. We also use melatonin for bed time (which is probably not Montessori) otherwise she would be up til 10pm every night and not want to get up in the morning. She has always had sleep issues. Even as a baby. Thanks for the advice about throwing food! Will try it with my 2yo Also, do you get Bluey in the states? It's not bad for a kids show. Question for a possible part 3? 😇 How can we help the 14-18 month old range with learning how to speak? I know Montessori methods are more child-led, but how will they learn on their own if we are not there physically and verbally teaching them every word and sound? I love all your videos, and I am fascinated at how articulate and aware of their feelings/surroundings your beautiful girls are! Great job raising these bright girls!

Montessori has an entire range of activities specific for Languge development! 🥰 So while it's child led whether they want to work on this activity or that, we still guide and encourage them to work on activities that provide them a well rounded development. Language baskets are a simple and powerful language activity. So is reading to them. While they can choose their work on their own, that doesn't mean we aren't there. Especially for the language works, where they do need to hear us say these words!

Do you not get them toys other than birthdays or Christmas? What are the exceptions that you would get them something other than a holiday?
@HapaFamily

Usually if we are visiting somewhere special and there’s a gift shop, we’ll consider buying them something (but even then, it’s preferable for them to use their own piggy bank money to do so). But we really try to limit it other than that to just birthdays and holidays. :)

I have a question, my 1 year old loves eating…thing is she doesn’t appreciate sitting in a chair, but she only eats a small amount before standing up and shimmying her way to the next activity then coming back to her food usually when I’m in the middle of cleaning it up…you know, assuming she’s done so take it away 🤷🏼‍♀️ thing is she doesn’t get the concept of “if your not sitting at the table your getting your food taken away to be wrapped and served later” she just over compensates by asking for milk upon milk…any advice for this all over the place 1 year old there’s only so much I can chalk up to age before trying to crack down on walking away

I give freedom to move around if she's still at arms reach of the table. I noticed my girl needs to take a dance break mid meal sometimes 🤣 But if she tries to fully walk away, I take it. I've only had to do this 2x, and after that just me saying that I'll take it sends her rushing back to the table. But once I take it, that's it. Kitchen closed until next mealtime. No snacks, no milk, just water available. We are in the midst of a milk strike right now, so asking for milk isn't an issue here, but even if she liked it-not available until next meal time 🤦‍♀️

Being so smart and mature of course a super mom don’t you feel kind of upset that Mike does not put the same effort on learning about parenting since is his job as well. My husband is super smart and good as what he does and I also work, but I take the time to read and research about parenting and for him despite that he is a good daddy he does not put the same effort. Sorry for the long question. Thanks for your videos ❤️❤️

I know this question is not directed to me but I just thought I'd share my take. My partner and I have a 6 month old daughter. I have past career experience working with children w special needs and our daughter blows my mind every day with the things she just naturally learns from watching us and her own determination. I learned a little about Montessori while I was pregnant because I needed words to explain to family members what my intentions were for raising my child. I explained the philosophy to my husband and we both agreed that we did not want our kid raised to be dependent or dumbed down the way we feel we were growing up. We communicate and express our feelings. When new things come up I talk to him about how I'm approaching different developments and 99 % of the time he agrees w my thought process. I thank him for his trust in me and his support. His appreciation of my intelligence and cooperation are all I need. That faith in me goes a long way. He has his own things to contribute and his ability to make our daughter laugh and to help me loosen up are skills that help balance things out.

Hej! We have a basket of soft balls that we allow to be thrown in the house. Whenever our toddler starts to throw toys we stop her and tell her that we only throw balls and redirect her to her basket of balls. It hasn't stopped the throwing but it has helped to decrease it!
