I remember going there as a kid. When you're 6, going to the dump is a blast! Thanks for sharing.

I work for the UW and my office pretty much sits on top of this now. So amazing that this was how it was done here only 50 years ago, we've come a long way!

Krystyn Lowe Yah. This view of reality is someplace else now. We see a concrete facility where we dump our stuff into a big hole that’s just a big semi trailer. They get this view.

I attended the UW from 1977 to 1982. Last three years there I lived in McMahon Hall. Last year there, the cluster I was in was on the view side overlooking the lake and the Union Bay, such is the privilege of being a long timer. Had no idea that there was an OPEN AIR GARBAGE DUMP right there where no doubt everyone on campus can SMELL it!! Closed in 1971, down the memory hole by 1977 as far as anyone on campus even mentioning it! They literally covered it up!

I wrote a sci-fi story once about a guy in the future who worked digging up all the landfills and mining them for resources.

That Burgermaster is still there! I think? Haven't been to Seattle in a few weeks so it could be a condo now. 😉

Garbage is sent to other places now on BSNF unit trains. Same concept just in another location.

There is still a dump near S. Hanford Street and 4th avenue S if you want to see a flock of seagulls like that. Its also fun to watch the trucks back up south bound 4th avenue S queuing up to get in there.

Looks very much like what happens at Waste Management's Riverbend Landfill on the banks of the Yamhill River Bank outside of McMinnville. 1000's of tons of unsorted garbage being dumped on exclusive farm lands. And Yamhill County Commissioners George and Springer just today approved a huge expansion of the dump here in the heart of the Willamette Valley. Just drive up and dump whatever you want. No recycling necessary.

Makes one wonder how the city of Seattle would have ever approved (even in the 60's) a dumping site this close to Lake Washington! DUH!!

The formation of "Metro" is what brought the changes that cleaned up Lake Washington, by making all the surrounding communities have joint responsibility for their waste. "The Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle was created by a local referendum on September 9, 1958, as a regional authority tasked with management of wastewater and water quality issues in King County. The authority was formed after civic leaders, including those in the Municipal League, noted that solutions to regional issues were complicated by local boundaries and a plethora of existing special districts. The state legislature approved the formation of a combined transportation, sewage, and planning authority in 1957, but the countywide referendum was rejected by a majority outside of Seattle. Metro, as the authority came to be called, was restricted to sewage management and given a smaller suburban jurisdiction ahead of the successful September referendum. By 1967, the agency had completed its $125 million sewage treatment system, which diverted 20 million gallons (76 million liters) that had previously contaminated Lake Washington..."

So many Seagals. Didn't see plastic bags. I don't think the creator had tis in mind , when we we created! Thank you big business! You've ruined the earth and managed to blame it on the average guy! Genius! As the richer get richer. You should be ashamed!

i do remember and having to sit in the car as a child, never realizing, how dammaging we were then! My god! The seagulls were thick!! The vid shows the burgermaster near by, my memory of it, is 1967-68, occasionally a stench rolled through, never connected thst it was the dump! I thought it was a nearby smelter or factory, all the tall smoke stacks! Im saddened by the video, not your fault, its a memory, nothing to do with woke crap! But like I mentioned, as a kid not realizing the damage! Later we went to the dump nrar fremont, they collected the garbage and hauled it here! Jesus! Well, as the song says, "The needle and the damage done!"

Unless you’re in San Diego, there’s no better major metropolitan area in the United States. I’ve been to all 50 states, so I’m not blowing smoke.
