Agreed. This applies to any person on KZfaq with actual real life experience vs. someone "reporting" on what they heard or read somewhere. While this isn't necessarily an ageist remark, those who've been doing something for 10,000+ hours tend to have been around for longer than those who have not.

A friend used to fly S3 Vikings off carriers back in the '80's. On his first deployment, first ever carrier landing he pulled out of his break and got in a hurry with the gear and flaps, tried to lower them before bleeding off sufficient speed. On the S3, if you did that the flaps would lock out...for good...until you were back on the ship and the crew could reset the system. So he had to perform a no flaps landing. Took him three attempts.

It would be great to see you do a collaboration with Growling Sidewinder. He respects the real pilots and has huge love and respect of the F14 and F18. Thank you for all your work.

Nice landing. The only thing to clarify is NWS gain behavior depends on wing position. If it is spread and locked you have to hold the NWS button for high gain whereas if you unlock your wings and start to fold em you can just tap the NWS gain once and it will stay on high.

Boy is that realistic! Well explained, too. I first tried simulated carrier landings with an early flight sim designed just for that on a 80s model PC. The ship and plane were just vector-graphic stick figures, yet I got appropriately tense going on and off the ship. There was a space shuttle sim just as primitive and just as fun. My second try was on the F-14 sim. at Miramar when it was still a Navy base. I regret not applying for the job of supervising those sims, but hey, working for TOPGUN had its pluses, too. Thanks for including us in your fun and info circle.

I was a final checker with VMFA-323 back from 1998-2002 and served aboard the Constellation in 1999 and 2001...it was my impression that the pilot "retracted" the launch bar after it was engaged with the shuttle so that it went to a retracted position as soon as the jet was launched.

The -18 is a great beginner module for those looking to make the leap into DCS or bump up from the low-fidelity FC3 planes into the High-Fi ones. You get the most out of multi-role planes and the -18 is pretty forgiving. Plus you get to learn to land on carriers!

Mooch, Thank you for the lesson sir. I have been coming past the ship at 350 indicated and breaking way too far ahead of the carrier and then waiting way too long to make the 90 break. Now that I see how it supposed to be done, I am going back for more practice. I have found that, just as it is in real life, that if I slack off and do not stay proficient with air to air refueling its like I have to learn how to all over again. You are the one who got me hooking up with the basket on a regular basis so thank you for that as well. I had the chance to follow my dream to becoming a Marine Flight Officer and sadly was hurt during training and had to take a medical discharge. Now I am just a regular General aviation pilot and that's how I get my fix these days. One of my biggest issues is with weapon delivery in the hornet. I cannot seem to slew the target designator on to the target and get a lock when I employ the Maverick or any other ordinance that calls for such actions. I cannot seem to find a step by step (for dummies) check list that will allow me to get well versed in order to memorize the procedure. Plus I need to get a better H.O.T.A.S. system. Thank you for what you do and have done. God Bless you and your family sir. ps, I have over 8,500 hours of DCS time and can remember when planes like the Hornet and Tomcat were nothing but a dream. There were only a few jets to choose from in the U.S. inventory. Different story today and cant wait for the Alpha 6 and Alpha 7 to be developed. The A-1 will be nice as well.

One of the best configurations we flew with was the “ugly” config, centerline and one wing tank. The options were better and gave the ordies a break. This was the legacy hornet. Adm Walsh thought it was the best overall. Pilots didn’t think as much about it. Once we started work ups we left them that way.

My father was a Flight Sim contractor for Cecil Field / NAS JAX from the 80's-00's, I was able to fly the A7 night time carrier sim, and later when the F18 came along fly that sim. Never understood the naval talk from the pilots but as a young teen but I could land the A7 on the 3 wire with 3 foot swells at night with no bolters. so it was funny when I got out of the sim and walked into the ready room to see the officers eyes open and jaws drop when a 13 yr old boy walked in..... lol.. then a few years later when I would get to fly the F18 sim, it was designed so that when an F18 was on a Real Time Mission or Training Mission and RTB, the flight was dumped onto a server and it could be loaded up in the sim so other pilots could fly the same mission and learn from any mistakes made on the mission...I got really good at dropping bombs at Pinecastle Impact Range. I ended up being darn good with Air to Air combat as well, id say I had a above average Kill to death ratio.... lol in the end my father ended up at Mayport taking care of the Seahawk flight sim. I never made it down b4 my father retired so I never got to try my hands with rotary flight. And b4 you ask!!!! Yes I buzzed the tower at over 400 knots,,,, in the sim of course!!!!

Found your channel when looking for DCS World info and I LOVE it! I purchased the Tomcat and Hornet with the Maverick pack through Steam and have been obsessed with aviation as of late. Figured spending thousands of hours playing DCS world would teach me more practical skills instead of wasting time in stuff like World of Warcraft...not sure how a 45 year old IT guy would apply any of it 😂 but who knows...I may up and change professions to a commercial pilot one day, it can happen. Anyway, thank you very much for content like this and I also want to say how much I enjoyed the interview I watched of Dr. Justin Bronk the other day. I was floored by his brilliance. @@thomaskositzki9424 First of all, he doesnt use tacan and thus he hasnt setup a course line. Yea, both are necessary... Then, on the break he is going much faster than what he is supposed to but this is more of a guideline than an actual rule. The important thing is to pull G in relevance to his airspeed. In his case he needs to pull 4.5 G's at the start of the break and ease on the stick as the airspeed drops. He ends up pulling more than that which is why he ends up much closer to the carrier than he is supposed to. And you might ask, "how can I tell he is closer" and thats because when he is abeam the LSO platform and starts his left hand turn, he has to be UP TO a 30 degree bank... His angle is 40 or more degrees at some points meaning that instead his distance when abeam to the carrier being 0.9 to 1.2 nm, he sits between 0.6-0.8 at best. And why is that important? Because if aircraft divert from the pattern they have to follow, it leads to recovery taking longer as well as being unsafe. He is also in the groove for way too long but thats the least of the issues here. And last but not least and probably the most important thing. He is not in the bracket and thats because he tries to land the plane the wrong way... He needs to apply elevator trim until his velocity vector is in the middle of the E bracket. Then his stick must only move left or right until he lands. To raise or lower the nose he has to play with the throttle instead. This was by no means a good landing and when I say "all of you people" I mean all of you congratulating him on his landing in this comment section...

The hornet is surprisingly easy to handle for a first timer. I've tried it on a 30-days trial period a few years ago (back when ED was experimenting with the trial periods format) along with the Persian Gulf map, just to get the feel of it, and even in my first night ops flight with it in a multiplayer server, I was able to land on the boat first try. Of course I overlooked lots of the procedures since I haven't gone through the tutorials, so my startups were all roughly done with zero checklist compliance, so there were a bunch of startup procedure notes left unchecked on the FLCS page. But yeah, I was able to score some A-A kills and some SEAD missions in the first couple of weeks flying it. So yeah, the hornet is an incredibly easy aircraft to get started, but quite tricky to master like any fighter jet, I presume.

I'm digging deep into my brain cells, but my recollection is that you don't do clearing turns during CQ operations when you are staying in the pattern. In the situation during initial quals when you are doing touch and go's that also applies. Just turn to BRC. Ages ago (June 1979) I qualified in the RF-8G on the Coral "Maru". At the time that included night qual. There were no 2 seat versions of the Gator and no simulators. We went up to Lemore to fly the A-7 sim for night landings at the ship. We all died horribly (real confidence builder!) but the Airman 11th class railed every dang landing. Oh, and we all survived at the ship!

Obviously the military now has access to high quality, full motion, simulators to get pilots more training before getting in the cockpit, but I wonder if something like the super carrier module could be incorporated into training because of all the back and forth with the ground crew. I'm not aware of any other sim software that has that sort of capability and being able to practice taxing around the deck following directions from the ground crew. It would be pretty useful. Another huge benefit of sims like this is giving pilots extra flight hours on new, very expensive, platforms without incurring additional operations costs for those flight hours. There's no replacement for being in the seat, and it shouldn't be seen as such, but if you consider it as bonus time behind the stick it could probably do a lot of to help readiness.

Have you ever tried flying on DCS with the Grim Reapers? I've watched a lot of their vids here. Always good for a laugh.
