Moods & Images of Singapore (1984)

This film won 13 international awards in 1984. It was one of the first of its kind in Asia and has neither been matched nor beaten.
Singapore made subsequent tourism films but none were as successful as this film. Its success was based on FIlmwest taking the hard line by insisting on no narration and a voyeuristic camera approach. This approach is used by millions of people today capturing images with mobile phones.

I was in Singapore until 1986 and this is closely how I remembered Singapore. Beautiful and wonderful memories.

This is a great little film, and the orchestra provide both superb music and an admirable image of the integrated Singapore we all admire and enjoy.

Also, thanks for providing this footage as well. For most of these places similar footage from the 1980s are hard to find (eg, Changi Airport terminal 1 back then)

Life in singapore was never easy! It was a daily struggle for the average local....!!! I was lucky to be given the chance to leave..... USA, oct-2015.

+singy1980 Perhaps so, for many. However in the time we were there, we had many Singaporean friends, most of whom are still there, and we still keep in touch with them. Without doubt it was one of the best places to live in South East Asia at the time. Thanks for watching the video and commenting.

Thinking about it feels so strange now, because people of the past yearn for the future and always want to visualise what it looks like, now everybody wants nostalgia and keeps going back to the past and see what it looks like, even if they were not even born in the older generation.

That was the year my family and I left to return to the UK, sadly, but you brought back some happy memories. Would the conductor be a Mr Choo? I was at school with his son Lin.

+Scotspikeman Sorry not to reply earlier. Yes, the wonderfully cinegenic Mr Choo. The concept was created by Jon Noble ACS after a visit to the SSO in the late 70's, and he convinced the STB that using this multiculural Orchestra as a link to Singapore's multicultural society would make this wonderful film shine.
