My '84 Softail had 151,000 miles on it when I took it down for rebuild and even then it would pull 100 mph with rider and passenger. As far as I am concerned, Harley stopped making motorcycles when the last EVO left the factory. ETA: You have a real talent for making these videos.

Beauty bike Del, after I sold my 11 Nightster I picked up an 07 FXDB last year, specifically because of the issues you mentioned, and the 07 was the best year for a few reasons ( engine colour, non integrated risers and full rear fender) I added a repro set of Dyna police footboards and could not be happier. Excellent choice on your bike, classic looks and handles, mag wheels a more worry free bonus as well, look forward to your Dyna vids!

Thanks buddy, didn't make it a review, more of a 'here's what I bought' because so many people asked for a walk round ... and we fancied a ride out... I'll be doing a few reviews on it, but more as an excuse for up-grades, gonna de-cat the bike this weekend... the suspension has got some room for improvement, and a few other things as time goes on... so should be able to reach out to a lot of Dyna owners who are the second largest generic bike owning group next to Sportsters... good to hear from you buddy, ride safe, D&P!

Hey Del, GREAT choice. I too have a 2012 FLD Switchback. I'm excited to see your upcoming maintenance vids. As I've told you, I do all my own work - although not common for a woman - and I have learned a lot from you. By the way, the FLD is notorious for having a terrible vibration. I fixed mine by first putting a Screamin' Eagle Night Stick on and replacing the bolt that connects the muffler to the frame with a clevis pin and nylon and rubber washers. ENJOY your FLD! - Twyla
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Twyla... glad the videos can help ! And it's really cool that you have the same bike... ! You're right, they do vibrate a lot on tick over and moving slow in traffic, it's to do with the length of the exhaust... the motor mounts are the same on every Dyna, but the others don't have a full length heavy exhaust that's connected to the frame... mine has a full Pro-Pipe system fitted, which I don't like the sound of, it's too hollow and low pitched, almost sounds like a metric cruiser! I can't find a Thunderheader in the UK for sale, and they are too expensive to import, so am gonna go with some V&H twin pipes, they are lighter and bolt to a floating bracket that's mounted to the engine, which doesn't transmit the vibes to the frame... either way, the vibes vanish above 1200revs - first job I'm gonna do is this weekend, remove the cat convertor out of the factory header pipe, so it's empty, which will be a good video for those who want to do that - keep in touch, all the best, D&P !

I am also owner of a Dyna Switchback since almost three years. I am satisfied and had no trouble with it. That bike is a kind of cross-breed of a dyna and a FLH model. It gives you the best of both: nimble and not too overweighted, like dyna's but has abilities for duo and touring riding of the other big full dressers. Switchbacks are sometimes considered by some hardcore Harley riders as a poor man's Road king , or a tourer for the women but I dont care what they say. The only things it is lacking is a dual disc front brake and air sissy-bar with adjustable suspensions. I have just added a crashbar and a detachable luggage rack. All the rest is still stock, even the exhaust system! I just want to change the handlebar for a slightly lower and wider one. Forgive me foor my poor English, i am french.

Nice bike Del, congrats! Two times I asked you ( and warn ) about cam chain tensioner problem on TC88 before 2007, and today finally, I've got answer, thank you. BTW, two month ago I sold my 2006 TC and now thinking about new one :) Dyna is great bike, particulary switchback. ( I've tested different modells of Dyna, LR S my favorite today ). I like to feel vibranions given by engine and smooth moment on the rear wheel. What the great sound of your new bike! Best wishes!
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks buddy, I first heard about the tensioner issue in the press when I worked in the bike trade... it even partly affected the EVO's, before the twin cams came out... I checked mine about a week after buying the bike, and it was perfect... could have even been a new one... so I had nothing to worry about, but the only real peace of mind, is the gear drive conversion, and all the rest I said in the video... The Low Rider S is gonna be a short lived bike, and it will lose quite a bit of money, they are currently way over priced for what they are, £5000 more than a WideGlide, and the equipment they have over the WideGlide is about £2000 worth... they have suffered from a lot of over-hype, and the 107 engine is the future... the 110 motor in the CVO bikes, is not the 110 in the LR S, there are differences, like I said, there's a lot of hype behind that bike to justify the price..... Obviously you must buy one if you want one, but be concious they will drop in price quite severely after 3yrs... go back in history and many specially tweaked Harleys have come and gone, and are all pretty worthless these days... XR1200, for example, NightRod Special, Buell 1125, and even earlier than all these, the Dyna FXR Sport from the '90's (the one with the twin plug heads) - if investment means anything to you, then it's the style icons that hold their value forever... I didn't lose a penny on my FatBoy and owned it for a year... just a thought to help you make your choice mate !

Congrats on the beutiful new bike, but I think the cam tensioner is only a problem for those who have to pay big money to the dealers to get it inspected regularly. Ive heard the newer twincams have the same issue, just the shoes last more thanks to hydraulic tensioning. I like a lot the paint scheme btw!

Delighted to get the chance to have a good look at the FLD! It looks like you've got a couple of bar options as well as it seems to have a shorter 'beach' bar on in the other glimpses I've had. The paint is beautiful, as I've said previously. Very close to a Duo Glide FLP. It's a truly flexible platform although it seems a common complaint that the screen is too short to be really useful, accentuating head buffeting. Many reviews complain about the vibrations, as this isn't the.103 'B' like on the Softail sand tourers. I say hoorah, I want that haha. Too much going on with the house renovation currently to even contemplate any changes bike wise. But I'm really sold on the Switchback, for the second time round as I nearly got one when I bought the 72.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 жыл бұрын
Get in quick buddy, they don't make them anymore, and they're gonna become sought after... they only deleted them because they were taking a chunk out of RoadKing sales, they need clear definition between the model genres and the Switchback fogs the line too much... in sales terms, a Dyna should not be a tourer, and it's the same reason they deleted the Dyna Convertible in '93... !

The Dyna is iconic Harley, and I was sad to see its models subsided into the Softtail line this year. When I bought my 2006 Road King Classic, it had nearly 85,000 miles (not kilometers) on its cam chain tensioner. So I was lucky, but there was time left on the extended warranty, so I paid my $25 to have the warranty transferred, then I paid another $50 to have the crank journals and cam journals replaced, plus had the cams upgraded to SE, re-ringed the pistons and honed the cylinders, and-within the same $50 warranty repair-changed the standard tensioner to hydraulic, with a high-volume oil pump to drive it (this is the same tensioner used on the 96 ci Twin Cam). So there is a less noisy alternative to gear-driven (although, if paying for it out of pocket, the cost of the two upgrades is about the same). Of course, then, on top of my 50-buck warranty work, I added V&H Dresser Duals, a Drak hi-vol intake, SE tuner (tried the V&H Fuel Pack but it wouldn’t run right) and-because they were the only thing on the bike that looked worn-upgraded the forks to chrome. Oh, and added a backrest because I am an old fart. Essentially, a rebuilt engine. And later-also under warranty-I did the compensator, sprockets and swingarm bushings, plus swapped in a new belt out of my own pocket. So, now I have a 12-year-old Harley that will lift the front wheel off the road in 4th gear, without me even yanking on the handlebars. Just a long-winded way of saying that there is an alternative upgrade. The hydraulic tensioner is quite reliable, provided you go to a high-volume oil pump at the same time. But all that worked only because I had extended warranty money to work with. Operating out of your own pocket, you did precisely the right thing, Del.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, it looks like you got your money's worth from that warranty upgrade aye... good going buddy.. and it sounds like a monster now, i was blown away by the extra power in the 103 motor over the old 1450 twincam... its pretty tempting to invest in some cams and a pair of SE hi flow heads.. Good to hear from you buddy, have a good weekend.. Del.

I haven't been riding as much lately partially due to the weather, partially due to the wife's work schedule and I cart the kids back and forth a lot. In an ideal world I'd add a fat bob or possibly a triumph of the same idea as a fat bob to my arsenal for quicker rides and some nice handling. But I love my Fatboy so far. Looking to upgrade the seat and take her on some longer rides.

I really appreciate your videos! I just bought a 2007 softail custom and fulfilled a lifelong dream! As a father of 2 young children it helps if you can do some of the work on the bike yourself to keep things affordable. Your videos are a great help! Thanks and keep up the good work!

hopefully a quick question, did the cam tensioner get fixed for the 96 in or did they wait until the 103? that isn't a headache I want to deal with.

The countryside reminds me a bit of the area around the Norfolk Broads. I spent some time around there and West London (Ealing) in my misspent youth (the late 70's) on a 850 Norton Commando MkII that had some Dunstall work done to it. I like your new bike. I'm not a Harley fan. I've only ever ridden a SoftTail and a Road King for short rides. I'm more into roadsters and sport/touring bikes. My bikes have to handle (not scrape bits) when I ride in the twisties. I'm an ex-Californian that now lives in southern Oregon. Your new bike looks classic and has the Harley styling that appeals to my tastes. The cast headlight assembly and the bags are pure Harley old school. The colors are interesting without being garish. You've done yourself and Penny a treat by moving up to this Dyna. I don't know much about Harleys but this one is really nice... subtle and classic. Well done. Thumbs up!

Thank you buddy, that's very kind - I think we probably have different interpretations of what twisties are lol here in England, every road is a twistie, even some of the freeways lol ! In my experience, this Dyna handles better than any other Harley, including Sportsters... but then that's what they're designed to do !

I have a buddy that rides an old Panhead (AMF) and he told me to test ride a Road King, back when I was looking for a bike in 2003. I didn't like it. It didn't fit my riding style... mountain roads and canyon twisties. I got a Beemer instead. It's gone now. Love your channel, especially the builds. So creative and interesting. You are a great teacher.

Yeah, we think so too mate... not sure it the message came across right in the video, the fatboy was by no means worn out or past it... i just looked at the cost of upgrading it to a better spec and iron out the known weak link... and it was cheaper to actually buy a much better bike for the money.... a bike that will serve me an dPenny a lot better for a lot longer.. thanks for watching buddy.

Thanks Del. I was gonna offer you £20k for your Fat Boy, but you went and sold it before I had chance! ;-) haha. I LOVED your Fat Boy...one glorious bike...The videos of it really didn't do it justice!... I couldn't get over the size and beauty of it when I saw it for real, and I've never been a cruiser man...erm... until now!!... I'm really starting to lean that way, love the style, comfort and laziness of them... I've reached that age now where I appreciate these things :-) The new bike looks stunning too, and great to get one that's different to the original

I can't believe how parallel our bike lives are, you in England an me here in Washington State. While your riding an talking about Harley timing chain tentioner troubles I'm looking through the box of parts. I had same thought you did, why put in same failed pad parts back in so I upgraded to new Harley Hyd. system opting out of gear drive only because of cost (I'm nuts but not that crazy)!. I bought the tools so now I can do both systems. You upgraded your bike with much less miles just dealing with this cam chain problem. I stayed with my bike for two reasons: all my $6000+ in accessories they'd give me dime on dollar, an it being a 03' 100 anniversary edition. Having already put auto-adjuster in primary an so much more. Now we know why you ride, roads in England so narrow, my driveway is wider than your so called roads, more like cart trails in width. What happens on bridge when truck not car comes side of your bike? Ride Safe, always think that cars going to turn in front of you, because he can't see you!

Good Morning Tim, Firstly, Thank you for all of your cool messages, its great to hear from a Kindred Spirit all the way from over there.. These days i have changed may Harley Direction again, i realized in the end that im just plain not interested in the newer bikes, Fuel injection, ABS, Traction control, FlyByWire throttle, drink holder lol... its all getting a bit too "Lexus" for me... so last November, I sold up my new model EFI touring bike, Went and sourced a 1999 Dyna Wide Glide from an old guy who bought it brand new and loved it for 20 years, only selling it because he and his Wife for a few reasons could no longer ride it... so i gave them good money for it, and rode it 300 miles home in the rain.... It went straight on the bike lift the next morning, and after 3 months it rolled back out into the sunshine a totally different bike.. i made a video series to cover all the work, but also made a short reveal video at the end, here is a link. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ma-feNB8vqyZhGw.html I shot a "before and after" to show the transformation.. and you can see more of our tiny country roads too... I totally Love the bike, its bare bones, hard core, carburetor, Loud and lazy... Just my take on what a Harley Davidson should be... This is my keeper now, im donw with new model Harleys, as good and efficient as they are, i just ain't looking for what they offer and i dont have a degree in computer science to fix them.!! Take care my friend and keep in touch.. Del.

Moonfleet41 I was hoping I wasn't bugging you with more than couple comments. I hope you enjoy you new ride! That's a good way to buy something from a friend or someone you know that really took care of his or her equipment. My friend Harry was forman for propane co. in Portland, Oregon an did propane conversions to trucks an cars. I put a complete suspension "Ben's Springs" built on a 76 Chevy truck I rebuilt. I balanced an blueprints motor, Holly carb an Edelbrock intake an exhaust.Then we mounted a propane carb above an to Holly carb with electric fuel shut off an an electric fuel pump. I wired both systems to switch for gas or propane. Gem Top Truck Canopy paid me twice as much from teaching school with four day work week (but I missed the teaching an students). They had 18g-4x8ft sheets of galvanized painted steel that I could buy for $5 a sheet (what a deal) I had steel everywhere) so I built the only Gem Top Camper ever made, haha! Used all their parts an lights. Then put air shocks an sway bar, an 80 gallon propane tank in bed next to cab so camper rolled right in over tank. Anyway, when I was ready to sell that truck my friend Don refused to have me sell it to anyone else, Cool! I had a Jeep an a Honda 750CB that sold the same way, come to think of it, non of my stuff sit around long when for sale! I like it, new buyer likes it an my equipment like it, it's the same for you! That's why I watch, haha! RIDE SAFE! Tim

Exactly that buddy... and I think the reason they're such a convenient cross over bike is probably why they've deleted the model from the range, as Harley need their different models genres clearly defined to retain sales!

One more time...When did Harley change from the plastic cam chain tensioners? Were these on the twin cam motors only or were they on the old Evolution engines? I have a 2006 XL1200C Sportster. Do you know if my bike has the defective cam chain tensioners and should I sell it before the engine flies apart?

Del and Pen, I think you just made a super smart move changing up the way that you have. Even the new owner of your Fatboy wins too, with a well looked after bike. Good luck with your new Switchback, a very useful bike with great looks and smooth suspension. Dynas are much better bikes than Softails imo. Never ridden an Electra Glide yet though.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 жыл бұрын
Technically speaking buddy, if you wanna be a nerd about it, a Dyna is an ElectraGlide... if you go back to a 60's Duo Glide (the first bike with suspension front and rear), then the bike right after that had electric start , so ElectroGlide... if you mean the new touring bikes though, like the RoadKing, or StreetGlide, they are even better than both of the others together... air suspension, longer and more stable chassis, but they are an absolute shop on anything but open road s!
@brandywell44
@brandywell44 7 жыл бұрын
Or, if you put an Electra Glide front end on a Super Glide you return the bike to an Electra Glide. lol . Its a nice bike though your new one.
