As you say: To have it available, that is king! I photograph a lot and having a solidly good lamp with you makes it less possible that I will do full on face plants in the dirt or what not. I haven't gone for the headlamp variants yet. (I have a handheld Acebeam something something that can fry mosquitos - if they're close enough to the beam - with a touch of a button.) The ability to turn night into day is a game changer.

Forgot to ask: What kind of battery is it running on? Something easy to change and swap out when it is depleted? Like 18650 or?
@tshansen
@tshansen 8 ай бұрын
Indeed, a bright light can turn every situation to the better. I never gave it much though before I really felt like I needed it. I have used headlamps for many years now, but always thought it was good enough. But with the new battery technology and great Led lights, things has really turned around to the better. They use own batteries you can have extra or charge with a usb-c cable (power bank or outlet) I'm not sure what a spare battery cost but I don't think it is replaceable with other batteries like the 18650
@DonClemenster

As an electrician, and a headlamp princess i've been through a lot of headlamps. And Moonlight does look like an excellent headlamp. But also a little like a one trick horse. Its main forcé is trail riding. and can be used for other purposes. However i swear for everyday use it would end up on the shelf for me, because of its size. For me the best headlamp money can buy i the Fenix HM65R. It got it all: Great output Flood light with warm white light for leeser strain on your eyes for close work Separate spotlight (can be used simultaneously with flood USB C rechargeable batteries lightweight Battery indicator Minus is the battery life, but since it runs on 18650 batteries, you can bring spares, you can change them out and keep on going. The HM65R is like an adventurebike. A jack of all trades with all the key elements for me, and i wouldnt mind go trail riding with it.
@tshansen
@tshansen 8 ай бұрын
Hahaha, a headlamp princess 😂 best one I have heard in a while. Great to hear your experience with the feneix lamp, I actually own one of them myself. I always have it in my cabin. so if I forget any of my other headlamps, that one is always there. Headlamp is always a little bit difficult to rate, because we have so many individual needs. For me, the moonlight headlamp is without a level up from anything else I own, but I have a more specific need than others maybe (speed) But really nice to hear why you choose the Fenix as your favourite. (I know they sell others) but I guess the HM65R is the best one. It is about 1400-1500 Lumens if I'm not mistaking. I actually like the batteries. A lot of the gear I use for hiking use the same batteries.
@DonClemenster
@DonClemenster 8 ай бұрын
@@tshansen i feel pretty when i put on my headlamp 😉 I know what you mean, and for speed I believe the moonlight is perfect. For speed you need lumens and range, and I looks like you're all set. Really like you choose the 2000 and 3000 setup. Think I would have gone for the same setup. However I've experienced you can get too much light. A couple of years ago I nearly went throug a deer on my motorcycle because I didn't see it in time. The solution to that problem was 2x Baja Design Squadron pro.. and holy shit I could see everything. The problem is that when i meet oncoming traffic and turn it off my night vision is smacked and for the next 5min I feel like the OEM headlight might as well could have been a 1850's mining headlamp. So there's is a light for every job. But I've learned that you can get to much as well.
@tshansen
@tshansen 8 ай бұрын
@@DonClemenster Hahaha, I can relate to that. you can dress for something fun in a way. there is without something to the whole Too much light as well. I'm working as a rescue leader and we have some really strong (call batman) lights for searching for people. And if you light that towards someone, or move it around too much, you will lose the line of sight after you turn if off for many minutes. We also have a lot of Lupine headlamps, they are crazy expensive but I feel like they are so damn clumsy to use. The batteries are big and heavy. the light has to many options and button press. I know they use them for sled riding in the north. I'm no fan.
@DonClemenster
@DonClemenster 8 ай бұрын
@@tshansen that's what happens when you let 1 guy dictate what you all have to use. On paper Lupine is a great headlamp. But if the functionally is not there, then it's useless. I'm a big fan of letting people choose their own gear. We're all different, and if the gear meets the requirements for the job, then there is a lot to gain. Rescue leader you say.. I once worked on offshore wind farms. And often it could be very foggy outside. Like you could see 2m in front of the boat. One day we were heading out, but couldn't get on the turbines due to thick fog. The ships gps said we were inside the turbine we were supposed to go on. And then we got a call over the radio. Somehow on of the other boats forgot a Nightshift team on one of the other turbines. So we had to pick them up. But since we couldnt find the turbines, that was a small problem. To our luck the guys used something that basically was a laserpointer for alleigment jobs. Those lasers could somehow cut through the fog and we could "scan" the siluette of the turbine. Which made me think those laserpointers would be great for rescue operations. What do you do in low visibility situations?
@tshansen
@tshansen 8 ай бұрын
Correct, and that is a really good point. People should be allowed to find their own equipment more. Because we all need to master tools that works for our needs. Not everyone's needs. Well, in thick fog there is not much to do other than turn the lights down and get close. A laser pointer could be valuable for the one who needs rescue. But it is most certainly something I need to test out if we can use as well. That is a great tip to be honest. the tint of the light makes a difference as well, blueish or yellow.

But when you start doing other activities, and more serious work (at the cabin) you need brighter light. Running, skiing, trail riding with my new bike, well... there is noe way around it if you want to do that in the mornings or evenings. Yeah, i had to start taking my health serious again. I used to do quite a lot of night riding on my MTB, including 24 hour races where I would happily ride a few night laps. Technology has moved on a little but I used three bright LED headlamp units. One on the bar aimed just a short distance in front and another aimed much further, the third was mounted on my helmet because as you found (I spotted it in the video) we 'look' at a corner before getting there, with just bar mounted lights (OK for roadbikes), you have to ride slower because you are often turning blind into a dark space. Those Moonlight units look really good.
@tshansen
@tshansen 8 ай бұрын
Yeah, I personally thought it would be enough with just a bright headlamp, but after chatting with the guys at Moonlight they strongly recommended a light on the handlebar as well. And I have to say, it would not be the same without one. And yes, I imagine having two on the handlebar like you describe would be even better. I'm surprised how intense and rewarding it is to ride around in the dark like this. I absolutely loved it. Finally something really fun to do in the dark season up here. 🤩

I haven’t used headlamps that much. I don’t know why actually, they give you both hand free and always pointed in the same direction as your eyes 🍻🤪 well most of the time at least. I recently buy a cheap headlamp from biltema, not even near the quality of those lamps in the video. On paper it gives 600 lm, I don’t know if it does but it is the brightest headlamp I have own but not enough light for running or riding a bike in the forest. You definitely need better light to do that in a safe way. 2000 and 3000 lm must be extremely bright 😮 Things that I find important is that the flood of light spread evenly over the area so it’s not only a extreme bright spot in the middle and almost no light at the side. Or even worse a dark spot in the middle which some poor quality lamps have 😂. To support local manufacturers is definitely a good criteria when choosing products 🤩🇳🇴
@tshansen
@tshansen 8 ай бұрын
I have done pretty much the same as you Jonas... 200-300 lumens was good enough and replaceable batteries. But I have found that running around searching for small AAA batteries can be quite a pain. And I really did not know I needed that much light before I had the option to put it on. Like you see in the video with the huge lights in the from of my car. You think there is good light on a car, no! it's not! it is rubbish when you get proper light and understand how important it is in the dark, or middle dark hours of the day. Going fast on the trails, running, riding or even skiing you will need a brighter light. And it is so damn nice to don't have to worry about it. So this will be a trusted companion for many adventures ahead. 🔥 A little bit more bulky than my Petzl on motorcycle trips, but I can live with that.

Damm!
