Located about three hours northwest of Denver, Colorado is the small ski town Steamboat Springs. Best known for winter sports, the town is also home to Moots Cycles and an amazing network of gravel roads.
JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew was invited to the Moots facility, for a factory tour led by company President, Drew Medlock. Moots opened for business in 1981, constructing steel bikes at first, but switched exclusively to titanium in 1991.
This factory tour takes you from start to finish during the construction process of a Moots Titanium Cycles frame, culminating in a look around the company's on-site showroom (with greeting by Rocky).
If you would like your own tour of the Moots facility, they offer them every Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting at 10am. Moots Titanium Cycles is located at 2545 Copper Ridge Drive, Steamboat Springs, Colorado 80487.
Thank you to Drew, Rocky and the staff at Moots for their time during the production of this video. Additional thanks for the loan of the beautiful Moots Routt RSL (the bike I'm seen riding in this video) during my time in Steamboat Springs! Enjoy!

BTW...The titanium shavings you saw going into the barrel. The current wait time for a sweet hand crafted Moots frame is 6weeks, and to make that wait a bit more bearable Moots sends to their prospective new owners a little memento. Nestled within a nice presentation box is a small clear vial filled with the precious high quality US grade Titanium shavings, a handy Moots Musette bag welcoming you to the Moots family. The presentation box was a level reminiscent of something Apple does with each it’s products. Sure it’s all wrapped up in the nifty price tag but big picture caring just the same.

Awwwe Yeahhh! Moots! Couldn’t come at a better time. I should have a work order sitting in that “to do” box right now. Waiting on a 55cm Routt RSL with internal routing should take about 6weeks. Adorned with a Moots RSL stem, Ti cinch seat post, Root Beer anodized graphics and Ti bottle cages. Thanks for posting.

Great vid mate - Moots is truly a gem and this shows us all a glimpse of the magic behind the curtain. Their attention to detail, craftsmanship and design sits them at the pinnacle of the bike industry and peerless for that super metal - Titanium. Had a few Ti Litespeeds back in the day (before the Lynskey family sold) and while they were really nice, the tolerances, welds and finish on my Vamoots DR far exceeds anything I've seen. Cheers !

Hey GC thank you for posting this look inside the Moots factory. Sure looks like a place to get a dream bike built or perhaps work a dream job. I subscribe to many bike channels and have to say this is the best content for the cycling enthusiast I've seen in many months. Kudos man.

Love this! I want one so bad! I just wish the seat tube and seat post were a little less rigid (more compliant). Also, RE: the Stanley finish, how does it hold up over time? One of the benefits of brushed Titanium is that you can re-brush it fairly easily by hand. I wonder how that would work with the reflective colors on the Stanley?
@moserroman2083
@moserroman2083 5 жыл бұрын
Moots is not brushed it's bead blasted . So you won't be able to refinish it that easily you can do it yourself with some gear and 2 hands but Moots is probably more good at it than you except if you've experiences with that stuff . The stanley finish is anodisation and a 1000 USD option ... On smaller pieces like knives I know anodisation can and will fade a little over time , don't know on a bike frame...

Just built the next frame, titanium at United Bicycle Institute. There is a reason Ti is premium priced build and learned it first hand at my class. Owner of a Ti road bike for near 20yrs, was in a position to learn the trade on the next build to appreciate what Moots does there. Not overheating the tubes, not leaving the weld cold!! An extremely delicate task for those with eyes, fingers, and probably tattoo skills (a trade skill I have yet to test). I have come out with a usable if not life long true frame but better understand the processes and have learned to appreciate the Ti builders out there like Moots. So, gravel cyclist will you be on one for next Dirty Kanza?
@GravelCyclist
@GravelCyclist 5 жыл бұрын
I generally ride a review bike of some kind at Dirty Kanza 200. This year, I rode one of my personal titanium bikes. With that said, I've been riding Ti bikes for many years, long before I started Gravel Cyclist. Nice to see a response from someone with first-hand experience building a Ti frame.

Gravel Cyclist no worries Mate. Enjoy your posts and many get much out of them like this one. I’ve run DK200 on a straight tail carbon MTB and a specific gravel steel custom build. Always have thought the compromise might be Titanium. So continue to follow, continue to learn... what those do out there. And your a good leader on this. And besides, at least a couple of those folks shown there are UBI grads. It goes to show that if you invest in your trade you can come out positive in it. Believe in it.

I'm not sure if I heard correctly. Did he say 1200 bikes a year? Is that it? I know that brings them into the millions for sales but wow that's cutting it tight with all that machinery (Haas CNC's are not cheap), employee costs, and to top it off they're in Steamboat Springs, Colorado (not cheap). I live in CO and have admired their bikes. Incredible quality.

1,200 is correct. Haas CNC's are super nice, and they sponsor an F1 team!

I notice a lot of these factory tours don't want you to see how they align the frame. It's probably not a very pretty process that might worry people buying something so expensive.
